Saori is the reincarnation of the Greek Goddess Athena. She holds absolute authority over the 88 Saints.
Back Story
Saori Kido was born on the hallowed ground of the Sanctuary in Athens, Greece. The evil Ares was appointed as the new Holy Father of the Sanctuary, the only man allowed to commune directly with Athena to carry out her will. In a bid for absolute power Ares attempts to assassinate the baby Athena. He is thwarted by the Gold Saint Aiolos who takes the child and flees the Sanctuary grounds. Through great sacrifice Aiolos keeps the child safe and manages to cross the Sanctuary's border.The Japanese aristocrat Mitsumasa Kido is visiting the ruins in Athens, Greece when he stumbles upon the now dying Aiolos. With the last ounce of his strength Aiolos gives the old man the baby and charges him with protecting her from the evil within the Sanctuary. He states that brave warriors will gather before Athena in her time of need, and gives him the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius and says to give it to the one true Saint. Aiolos' life fades away as the old man takes the child and grants her the name Saori Kido.
Years later it is revealed to her by her manservant Tatsumi that she is in fact the reincarnation of Athena. Saori uses this knowledge to combat the forces of Ares and with the help her brave Bronze Saints, bring justice back to the Sanctuary.
