In the Tokyo of 1882, Sanshiro is a promising young martial artist who seeks a worthy teacher. He proves his ability by defeating 39 masters of jujitsu (who ridicule his choosing judo) and is taken in by their teacher, who continually tests him. He falls for local girl Sayo Murai and must fight her father at judo before defeating his greatest rival on the plain of Ukyogahara. Based on a novel by Tsuneo Tomita, best known in the West through its 1943 movie adaptation by a young Akira Kurosawa-though Kurosawa's version lacks the anime's comic-relief cat. The story, also included in Animated Classics of Japanese Literature, was an inspiration for the toy combat serial Plawres Sanshiro, which supposedly starred the grandson of the original. Kurosawa's 1945 sequel was pastiched in later episodes of Ironfist Chinmi, when Chinmi fights a foreign sailor. For more judo fun, see Yawara.
