A tale of a man with no memory of his past with an odd Jekyll-and-Hyde twist to him.

At the great battle of Sekigahara in 1600, two great warriors fight a battle that ends in mystery. Kyoshiro Mibu and "Demon Eyes" Kyo both disappear when a meteor strikes the battleground. Four years later, in a land plagued by monsters, Kyoshiro is a traveling medicine salesman who has lost his memories of the past. He runs into female bounty hunter Yuya Shiina, on the road seeking her brother's killer, shortly before an attack by a powerful snake monster. Kyoshiro destroys it and Yuya uncovers his secret-Kyoshiro and Kyo now share one body in the style of Ultraman or Bastard, and Kyoshiro's mild-mannered persona is the host for Kyo's murderous one. Yuya decides to stick with him and turn him in for Kyo's bounty if she can; Kyo wants to find his own body and needs Kyoshiro until then-compare to the similar quest of a disembodied samurai in Dororo. As the "trio" travel through Japan, meeting more people from their pasts, they learn that the evil Nobunaga Oda was resurrected by the Mibu clan for their own ends and is responsible for the monsters plaguing Japan. The only hope for the country lies in the swordsmith Muramasa, Kyoshiro's former mentor, who has fashioned five magical weapons whose wielders stand the only chance of taking down Nobunaga. Kyoshiro finally manages to kill Nobunaga, only to see him resurrected again by his own clan, this time in Kyo's old body. The pair must work together to defeat him by forging the Muramasa swords into one, incredible dimension-warping weapon.

An additional Jekyll-and-Hyde twist is introduced when we discover that the two-in-one are also one-in-two-Kyo really is Kyoshiro, or rather his fighting self. When he fell in love with pacifist beauty Sakuya, Kyoshiro tried to divorce his warrior instincts from the rest of his personality and succeeded in creating another self to embody all the samurai battle instincts and fighting code. He has thus been at war with himself for the whole series. Adapted from Akimine Kamijyo's manga in Shonen Jump, the story includes references to many other historical and semi-historical characters like Sasuke Sarutobi (see Magic Boy) and, of course, Japan's arch-bogeyman Nobunaga himself.
