Was this episode guest directed by Tex Avery? Sure, the show’s played it fast and loose with everything from the details of history to the laws of physics so far, but this was the first time it noticeably played by some old school cartoon rules. I’m thinking specifically about Jin flying out all-dry from the creek like some miracle marlin, Fuu’s “Presto! Change-O!” physique and Mugen’s superhumanly springy boner during all the antics in the whore house.

Maybe Watanabe was just re-watching “Red Hot Riding Hood” during his lunch break?

Man, I’m hoping that Mugen’s “girlfriend” shows up again, soon. I don’t know if they necessarily have chemistry as you’d typically define it, but they do have one hell of an interesting dynamic between them. Especially in contrast to the way the guy’s… brusque style was spotlighted during those rather cruel exchanges last episode with the floozy who still holds a candle for him, it’s honestly (dementedly) heart-warming to see him meet a chick who keep up with his violent self.

For a series that’s worn its flagrant anachronisms rather proudly on its sleeve, it did also feel appropriate to see them going balls-to-the-walls ridiculous when they finally got around to handling ninjas. From what I understand, the ninja might be one of the most sensationalized stock (or faux) historical characters in the entire pop culture stable. As in, there’s little evidence that any of the ninja clans that predominate so many of these shows ever actually existed. Sure, regular standing armies had stealth and infiltration units, but there were cabalistic cults of these guys lurking in caves throughout the mountain side.

But I digress…

Once again, I’ll reiterate how enjoyably... bohemian this trio is. Of course an all-expenses paid booty call is the first thing these guys are going to do once they’ve finally gotten their hands on some money. Of course. You've got to love the clear motivations, here.

Watch this episode, "Bogus Booty” below and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Mugen's antics in this episode definitely seemed to have some Looney Tunes inspiration. Also, I didn't feel the ninjas here were too crazy. They handled the ninjas pretty well if you ask me. Now Naruto...that's another story.

Mugen and Momochi Ginsa's voice actors clash again
Mugen and Momochi Ginsa's voice actors clash again

This episode has an interesting history in the voice acting cast. The voice of Mugen is Kazuya Nakai. He's also the voice of Roronoa Zoro from ONE PIECE. The voice of the bad guy in this episode, Momochi Ginsa, is done by Jouji Nakata, and he's playing the villain in the current arc of the ONE PEICE anime, Hordy Jones. So, these two are currently working together again. They also have a fight scene in ONE PIECE. The picture to the right is the outcome of their first clash.

To top is all off, Yatsuha's voice actress, Noriko Hidaka, is also the voice for Bellemere, the adopted mother of Nami from ONE PIECE.

Well, anything in comparison to NARUTO...

Huh. Interesting. I'm tripped out by how similar Mugen's voice actor sounds to Kotetsu/Mutta's.
