Sakumo Hatake was a legendary ninja of the Hidden Leaf village known as the White Fang. He is also the father of Kakashi Hatake.
Sakumo Hatake is as enigmatic as his son Kakashi Hatake. Little is known about him except during his prime his skills as a ninja rivaled Konoha's Sannin: Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. The suggestion of engaging in battle with Sakumo would bring fear to his enemies. Although dreaded by his enemies he was loved by his peers and admired by his son. A wide arrangement of shinobi skills were at his disposal but he was mostly known for his sword that emitted an aura of white chakra. This earned him the title of Konoha's White Fang.
Sakumo had an intense dedication to his team and companions. The primary rule of Konoha ninja is finishing the mission above all else, including the lives of the team. During a high stakes mission Konoha's White Fang saved his team but forsake the goal of the mission. This act of benevolence cost the Fire Country greatly and only earned dishonor among his companions and his country. This caused Sakumo to enter a deep depression that resulted in a severe decline in his abilities as a ninja. The level of disgrace he felt was so high, he took his own life.
Kakashi Hatake's dad died when he was very young so when Sakumo took his life, his son became on orphan at a young age. Kakashi inherited many physical characteristics of his father mainly his white spikey hair, but Sakumo's disgrace is what mostly burdened him as a ninja from Konoha. The pressures of matching his abilities and not repeating his mistakes were constants in Kakashi's life. Sakumo was responsible for the deaths of Sasori's parents and led to an unprovoked attack from Chiyo, an elderly ninja of the Hidden Village of the Sand and Sasori's grandmother. Along with his burdens, Sakumo's intense loyalty to his friends continues in his son. As a teacher and one of Konoha's finest ninjas Kakashi emphasizes teamwork and finishing the mission.
Kakashi would eventually meet up with his father in a purgatory like place. Sakumo apologizes to his son for his mistakes and invites Kakashi to sit down and discuss his life with him by a campfire. After listening to Kakashi's story, Sakumo tells him he must leave him once again and join his mother.
