Today's Episode

Well, kids, we finally made it-- this is the final episode of Saki. It's been a great run, full of kongs and tsumos and tacos and knee socks and every possible piece of lesbian romance possible, so long as it doesn't include kissing or sex. It's been filled with girls with fangs, girls with glasses, girls with short skirts and long skirts, girls who become invisible and girls who are invincible. Aw man, I promised myself I wouldn't cry. Hang on a sec.

*sniffle*

Okay, I'm fine now. Without further ado, let's all watch the last episode. And I'd love it if we outdo all the past episodes on comments today!

I miss it already haha, wish I could've seen that last match. Oh well, here's hoping they do another 25 eps for the nationals sometime in the future.

@FLStyle: Given how popular the show seemed to be, I'm surprised that a sequel hasn't been announced already. On the other hand, the manga's only six volumes so far in Japan, so they might be close to caught up with the canon. They seem a lot more inclined to split up a series and wait for more to be completed rather than creating their own version of the story these days, which is nice (except that you have to wait) ;)

As for the episode itself... I suppose it's proper that 2 of the only 3 male characters we've had all series are playing together =P (But where's the commentator guy? Hopefully he's 3rd of their four!)

It's kinda cool getting to see all the schools they'll eventually get to play, though I'm a little skeptical on the all-miko (or almost-all-miko) school's uniforms, especially the girl with the sexy version =P

Wow for such a commoner game Touka seems to be quite the ping-pong champ. Wow @ the souvenier exchange wonder what kind of metaphor they were going for there. >_> It seems my prediction was somewhat off (I thought he would actually be attending) but there still was a short scene of "OMG NEKKID GIRLS in an onsen.. damn and I'm still here" and wow I think that had about the least mahjong of any of the episodes so far I mean it was like about a minute. I wonder who Kyōtarō fourth player is Saki's dad perhaps even if that doesn't make much sense.

Wow I wasn't expecting Fujita Pro to show up it seems all they are missing are Teru and anime exclusive Kazue. Anyway if the ending preview is to be judged it looks like once the manga gets enough new material they'll have a second season. The one tall girl from the miko school has cool hair (the giant red ponytail and she seems to be the exception to the miko dress, which my cynical side is telling me is more fetish pandering.)

@Konanda: Yeah, I kinda wonder if we'll ever hear from Kazue again-- she looked like she had some potential as a character, but I can't imagine how they'd cram her in, since she didn't make it to Nationals.

But yeah, the miko girls are most assuredly aimed at guys with miko fetishes, but it seems pretty tough to actually make at all realistic. =P

Hmm, first I must say that the series wasn't what I was expecting. I had heard about Saki before and thought it was some kind of sports anime that are popular among japanese but not in english market. Eg you have to know the sport to be interested in it.  But because Gia started this "one episode per day" stuff with it I thought I'd give it a try anyway. And I saw that was not the case at all, you can know nothing about  mahjong and still watch the show (and after watching still know nothing). Well, actually the stuff I learned about the game were the explanations Gia posted about it:P
Secondly, I mostly enjoyed watching the show, It had a decent story and interesting characters. Maybe a little too many of them,,, And a little too much   lesbian (yuri?) romance (seemed somehow different from the usual ecchi like a'la Rosario + Vampire) for my taste, but it didn't annoy me too much.
So, overall, an interesting experience:) I may give some other "sports anime" a try in the future.

I must say, i actually really enjoyed the show. despite the fact that i had no idea what the hell was going on half the time, it was exciting when i actually started to somewhat understand it. in the short time i've been watching the show, i liked it.

Nodoka (is that how you spell it ?) still distracts me with.. um... you know. i thought something would finally go on with her and Saki (excuse me for saying that, but you know what i mean).

and WHY DID THEY HAVE TO END IT LIKE THAT?! >< i'll be waiting for my sequel, thank you very much. thanks for sharing the episodes, gia :D

Well, that was an unexciting conclusion... and surprise, Saki's sister is a jerk.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed watching the show, and like Harts was surprised how little any knowledge of the game was necessary (also surprised at how little they attempted to explain it.) And the yuri still seemed ever so slightly out of place. Like, I've watched plenty more ecchi series, but as I got into the games and plots the ecchi was pretty much just distractions.

"Stop wistfully staring into each others eyes or focusing in on their crotches! I've got mahjong to watch!"

Though I think I'd rather just pick up the manga then wait around for a second season to inch its way over. This series wouldn't have been near as enjoyable if it had been 1 episode a week...

@gia: I was wondering if they'd show Mr. Awesome Butler one last time haha

Yeah the non-Mahjong sections did get tedious, I might look around for the manga too, let me know if you find anywhere online to buy it.
