Saeko Busujima is one of the Fujima High survivors. A high school third-year and president of the kendo club. Her calm and elegant personality hides her dark sadistic nature.
Saeko Busujima is a student of Fujimi High School in the Tokonosu City and president of the Kendo Club. Years before the zombie outbreak and when 14 years-old, Saeko was molested on the streets on her way home from school, but Saeko proved to be too much against this pervert and easily got the upper hand. Using her wooden bokken, she beat the man nearly to death and was only stopped by the police who soon arrived. She didn't lash out of fear. It excited her. It was this night she became aware of her sadistic pleasure for violence. Her elegant and calm nature hides her violent desires. It was the shame of her desire for violence that has prevented her from ever confessing her feelings for a boy she liked. She may be the survivors greatest fighter, but she could also be their greatest threat.
Saeko Busujima is a main character of the manga/anime series Highschool of the Dead that was written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shouji Sato. The series first began serialization in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine in July 2006. The creators of the series classified characters using role-playing game terminology, and Saeko is one of the three Fighters due to her combat skill.
Her first appearance was in Hightschool of the Dead Volume 1 CH. 1 "Spring of the Dead", and her first anime appearance was in Highschool of the Dead - Episode 1 "Spring of the Dead". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, and the U.S. dub produced by Section 23 is done by Taylor Hannah.
Though she is the second oldest of the initial survivors, she has the smallest bust at 83cm D-cup. In a popularity ranking held by Dragon Age magazine, four characters from Highschool of the Dead were in the top 10, and Saeko took the number one spot.
"Protecting a man's honor is the very source of pride for a woman."
Saeko Busujima - "Highschool of the Dead" Vol. 1 - Ch. 2
Her first appearance in Highschool of the Dead had her wearing a basic school uniform of Fujima High School, and is one of the most respected students of the school. She teamed up with second-year Takashi Komuro's group at the school and has remained loyal to his lead. She prefers loose clothing that wont interfere with her movement in battle. She has long purple hair and originally wears a long-skirt style school uniform. She has a reliable and strong personality with a great sense of honor, morality, and comrodery. Though, her calm demeanor hides a violent and sadistic desire.
Saeko eventually discloses to Takashi that in the past she was nearly assaulted, and beat the perpetrator nearly to death, breaking his bones with her bokken. Enjoying the power she had over her prey. The joy she gains from this violence has been a source of worry. This is because she believes this dark side to be her true nature and could be growing worse. Takashi would be the one who would give her hope by telling her that no matter how far she thinks she's tainted by darkness that he admires her and would give her a reason to live on. Saeko soon after becomes a rival for the affections of Takashi Komuro with Rei Miyamoto, often blushing when he would compliment her on her appearance.
As the series progresses, she's given a superbly crafted katana as her new weapon. Her outfit is also changed to a small skirt, thigh-high stockings with garters, her school uniform top, pads for her elbows and shins, and platformed boots. The power with which she wields her blade is said to be even more deadly than a bullet. That didn't stop her from taking a thigh holstered side arm when they reached the police station.
Seako was once the star of the school Kendo Club before the "Spring of the Dead" at Fujimi High School and living quietly as an admired upper classman. On the day of the outbreak, Saeko was in the Kendo club's practice gym. Hearing the outcries and screams, she grabbed her wooden practice sword and went to investigate. What she found was her fellow students and teachers surrounding her and they were out to kill. She quickly realized that a strike to the head was the only way to kill " Them"(The title the zombies were given).
The first survivors she would comes across were in the school's nurse's office. A second-year boy, Kazu Ishii; and the school nurse, Shizuka Marikawa. The boy had been bitten, and Saeko offered to save him from the fate of turning to the undead if wished. Despite Shizuka's objections, the boy happily accepted the offer and Saeko ended his life with a swift strike to the head. The first human life she has ever taken. While heading to the teacher's office to get Shizuka's car keys for an escape, she would only block the attacks of Them or knock them down, explaining that killing all of them that got close would take too long and allow more to surround them. After Shizuka tripped over due to her tight-brand name skirt, Saeko ripped the side open to the waist. As they moved forward, another scream of a survivor was heard. The two moved into help, but the zombie was already dead. There they met up with four other students, Kohta Hirano; Saya Takagi; Rei Miyamoto; and Takashi Komuro. They exchanged greetings and teamed up to move to the teachers offices. With their increased numbers came safety, but Shizuka only had a compact car. They came together as a team to escape, discover their families status, and find somewhere to take shelter.
The team would escape the school with several other survivors they found with a school bus used for field trips, and also took on a small group of students being led by a teacher named Shido Koichi. As they sped along through the chaos in the streets, they could only witness the horrors that surrounded them. Morale was low in the bus and some of the students began lashing out and panicking. Shido Koichi began giving a grand speech as he was attempting to take control of the group. Some were falling under his maniacal charm, but not the team of Saeko and Takashi. When it seemed he had taken on leadership. Rei quickly lept out of the vehicle to escape. Takashi followed after her, but before any more could follow another bus crashed between them and caught on fire. Saeko rushed out to call out through the flames to see if Takashi survived. He was alright and they all agreed to meet at the Eastern Police station in one day.
The meeting with Takashi and Rei wouldn't go as planned. While stuck on the mini bus with Shido Koichi, Saeko was witnessing as he seduced many of the students with his unique charm. He was clearly forming a cult with his as their profit. She, Saya, and the rest refused to take part, but Shido attempted to prevent Shizuka from leaving since she's a doctor. Before Saeoko could make a move, Kohta fired his nail gun and grazed Shido's face. He covered the girls as they all left the mini bus to Shido's newly formed sect. Now they were without transportation, and the police were preventing anyone from crossing the bridges to get tot the eastern side of town to meet up with Takashi. The group was able to meet up with Takashi anyways since even he and Rei couldn't get across the bridges.
It was getting late and they needed a place to stay for the night. Saeko playfully suggested they storm the nearby castle, but Shizuka suggested to go to a nearby friend's house that she takes care of when she's out for work. It was there that they were finally able to wash their clothes and take a bath. None of Rika Minami's clothes fit her, so she settled on wearing only an apron and her panties while she prepared the meal. When Takashi wondered in, he was shocked to see how little she was wearing. She apologized for the revealing clothes and he suggested that they never know when there could be an attack of Them. She laughed and said that she put her faith in Takashi and Kohta, and asked him to stop calling her "sempai". He stumbled on trying to just say her name when a drunk Rei interrupted, calling out for Takashi to come listen to her. Saeko told him to go to her, saying that someones girls like to pretend to be weak. She didn't get to answer when Takashi asked if the same went for her.
Later, Saeko and Kohta had to hold Takashi back from attempting to save all the people who were in the streets being killed by them. She turned down toe light to prevent drawings anyone attention and explained to him that it could mean their death if they tried to save anyone else, and if people knew there were humans live in the house that it could cause them to be overrun and get them all killed. She handed him the binoculars and told him to get to know this new world. When he was surprised at her callousness, she told him not to confuse her words with her being happy about it. Not soon after, she heard Kohta taking shots into the street. He had Takashi were making a move to save a little girl who's father was murdered by other humans and she was in danger from Them that were drawn by her cries. Takashi apologized to her as he left, but she smiled and agreed to hold down their position at Rika's home while the others prepared their escape. She rode a top the humvee to pick Takashi up as he saved the girl, named Alice Maresato; and a small puppy, that they later named Zeke.
Now that they were leaving Rika's house forever, Saeko, Takashi, and Rei were able to sleep in the back seat of the humvee as the others drove into town and watched out. At some point in the night she collapsed and woke up with her head resting in Takashi's lap. Rei clung to him and pointed out to her that she was drooling. They soon reached the other side of the river and sent the boys to the front of the vehicle so they could change into the clothes Shizuka had grabbed from Rika's place. She selected the black mini-skirt, platformed boots, stockings and garter, and kept her school top.
The ride through town was oddly quiet. There was no sign of Them and the cherry blossoms fell. This lull came to an abrupt end when their progress was stopped by a wire fences that had been placed in the road. Rei had fallen and was injured, and Takashi jumped off to save her. Saeko did her best to defend the two, but the swarms were only growing. It seemed asif they were all as good as dead until an unknown group equipped with portable pressurized water cannon. On the other side of the fence, they learned that the leader of their saviors was Saya's own mother, Yuriko Takagi. The humvee had to be left behind and they were led to the Takagi Estate that was being used by Saya's family as a small fortress for other survivors. Saeko was given a purple kimono to wear while they were allowed to rest and take shelter behind these defended walls.
When Saya's father, Soichiro Takagi, returned from a rescue mission, she witnessed as he used a katana to chop off the head one of Them that used to be a retainer to his family and a friend. Saya found Saeko after her meeting with her mother as she admired the rare koi in the pond. For a moment she thought she saw a familiar person skulking around the estate when they both heard loud voices. Members of Soichiro's group were trying to take the guns away from Kohta. They all gathered around to support their ally. Soichiro later requested an audience with her where he gave her an ancient sword called the Murata-tou. She initially rejected this generous offer without hearing a reason why. Soichiro told her that he was at one time a pupil of her father and it was out of gratitude and for saving his daughter. Saeko explained that she didn't save Saya alone and mentioned Takashi. He was sure that Takashi has grown into a fine man, but as a leader he was still wavering. She reluctantly agreed. Saeko went to to see Takashi but heard voices inside, so she waited outside. It was Rei who came out and she asked her to speak with him. Saeko asked Rei to stop calling her sempai since they were the same age, but Rei cut her off, not wanting to talk about the issue any more.
When Takashi and Rei were determined to leave on their own to find their families and return later, she suited up once more to join them and keep her promise to him. She added shin, knee, and elbow guards to her fighting outfit that gave her an even more seductive look than before. Rei suddenly rushed off when she saw Shidou and his group had been welcomed in. She trained her rifle, point blank, at him and was aiming to kill. Saeko stopped Takashi from stopping her to make her own choice. When Rei relented, Soichiro kicked Shidou and his cult out. Shizuka suddenly remembered the phone number of her S.A.T. member friend and borrowed Takashi's cellphone. The call was interrupted when an EMP blast was set off in the atmosphere that destroyed most electronic devices.
The Takagi Estate was beginning to be overrun with Them and Saya's parents covered their escape. They were given a customized amphibious vehicle to make a run, Once they were further away, Takashi drove to the highway, but when that was overrun, and this vehicle was so loud it would draw all their their attention. They used this noise to their advantage as the rest of the team got off as Saeko and Takashi rode toward the river. When he crashed into the river, her clothes were soaked and became see through. They took shelter on a sand bar, and he gave her a shirt to change into. Takasi surprised her by asking if there was any boys she liked but she was evasive. She only told him that once she did like someone. With her clothes dried, they moved back on. Takashi drove into a park and crash the vehicle into the fountain, soaking her in water once again. She gave him the tape he requested and rigged the water car into driving itself in circles. The noise would draw the attention of Them, but he wanted to avoid using his shotgun since the noise would draw their attention. This left Saeko to cut Them all down in their path. Her blood rushed as she sliced Them apart, but froze when she came to a group of children versions of Them. She was only saved when Takashi pushed her away and used the shotgun on them. Holding her by the hand, he dragged her to a local shrine and locked them inside.
She sat without talking and he broke the dark mood by handing her a portable toilet, and this got her to laugh. She would then bring up the topic of the question he asked her earlier about her interest in boys and asked him to listen to her story. She told him the story of how she was attacked four years ago, nearly killed the pervert, and enjoyed doing it. She said that was her true self and had no place pretending like a girl with an innocent heart when he was willing to kill. He tried to say that he's also changed, but she told him that he adapted to this world. Her darkness was before the outbreak. All this killing of Them has only made this feeling worse. That's what she realized in front of those changed children.
The next morning they were ready to leave, and a large group of Them were already approaching. Takashi wanted to run, but she wasn't moving. The will to fight had left her out of the fear she would continue to enjoy the killing. Takashi suddenly grabbed her from behind and squeezed her breast. He was yelling at her that he would always except her darkness. No matter what, he would always see her as the best woman he had ever known. He passionately pleaded for her to to let herself or him die. His words reached her and reignited her heart to live and fight. She drew her blade and made a short work of Them. She felt the thrill of the kill and accepted it. On the way back to the reunion with the rest of the team, she grabbed his hand and asked him if he'd take responsibility for his promise. He happily agreed. They eventually met up at Taiei Shopping Town.
Rei and Saeko's tension only increased after Saeko's interest in Takashi grew. She even began to call him by his first name, without honorifics, in front of Rei and the others. There was a group of other human survivors held up in the mall and they were being watched over by a rookie traffic officer that was no older that any of them by two years. Takashi and Kohta hid their weapons to avoid undue conflict. Here they were able to stock up on supplies and clothes as they readied their next move. After Shizuka was nearly raped be one of the people from the mall, they were making plans to move on. They were distracted with an incident of elderly lady in serious need of a blood transfusion due to a chronic illness. Takashi, Kohta, the police officer, Asami; and another person volunteered to raid a nearby clinic for transfusion supplies. They returned with what they needed, but at the cost of the young man who came along.
Saeko, Rei, and Saya looked on as they watched the group try and work through what had gone wrong to lead to that man's death. Saya explained to her and Rei that Takashi and Kohta faced the most risk of their group of being lost to madness. Saeko surprised them by mentioning that she was willing to do what she could for them as a woman. The meeting broke down after Asami saw the changed version of her superior officer, Matsushima, wandering in the parking lot. She had left to get help from the local station, but had obviously failed. Word spread that no help was coming and the survivor group began to panic and splinter. One young man lost his mind completely and attacked another with a knife. He then ran away, opening the mall to Them. Saeko and the rest moved to the women's lingerie department, where Takashi and Kohta hid most of their weapons. Asami had been calmed by Kohta and asked to join their team.
Team Takashi and the other survivor's separated as they escaped, Saeko's team went to the parking lot, and the others, except for one, went to the roof. It was in the fight to evacuate that they noticed the young attacker who started this hiding on the car and pleading for help. The man who had earlier attacked Shizuka ran in alone to save the teen and Asami followed. They were all overcome and bitten. Asami was purposely screaming to drawn the attention of Them to save the members of Team Takashi. Calling out to Kohta, she begged him to not let her be turned into one of Them. He took aim, she saluted, confessed her love for him, and he fired to kill her instantly. This young officer had saved them all with her sacrifice, but the trauma had sent Kohta over the edge.
Kohta's behavior became more reckless and Takashi made a change of destination. They needed to resupply on ammo. Rather than head for their homes, they left for the police station of Rei's father. Kohta tried to stay behind to fight more, and Shizuka knocked some sense in him by issuing orders to him like a commanding officer. They had heard gunfire, but found the Eastern Police Station emptied, except for Them. SAeko quickly cut down a pair undead but was shocked when Takashi pointed out that they had been a couple. They fought through some of the changed police and checked the armory, but it had unsurprisingly been emptied. They then checked the evidence lockers for illegal weapons. It was here that Kohta gave Saeko a automatic pistol with thigh-strap holster, with the promise of teacher her to use it later. They checked the office of Rei's father, but found only a message on the board that the J.S.D.F. was using the Shintoko Third Elementary School as an evacuation base. The same school Takashi's mother worked. They knew where Rei's father and Takashi's mother could be. The mission was not to find Rei's mother.
When they neared Rei's home neighborhood, Saeko encouraged Takashi to let her take the lead. She knew that the risk of running into changed versions of people they knew was greater and might hesitate. This proved to be true when Alice pulled a risky move and Saya was the one to save her. Takashi and Rei paused because they knew the woman who had been changed. While moving through the roads and homes, they heard a woman yelling that Rei recognized as her mother, Kiriko Miyamoto. She had been sent out to get food by the neighbors she was living with, but they turned on her and refused to let her back in. They told her about the evacuation plan at the grade school and tried to tell the shut-in neighbors, but they refused to believe them. Kiriko was given a pistol and she already had a spear she borrowed of her husband. Saeko could tell the confidence in which she wielded the spear. With Rei's mother secured, Team Takashi moved to the grade school.
Her original weapon was a bokken used for bashing the skulls of Them with her great strength and skill. Later she is given a weapon from Saya father, Souichiro Takagi. A katana called the Murata-tou from the Meiji-era of Japan. With this blade she now dismembers and maims the undead. After the team reached the Eastern Police Station, Kohta handed her a pistol that she keeps in a thigh-strapped holster.
The anime of HOTD, that was produced by Madhouse, took some liberty with the continuity of events from the original manga story. The story of Episode 9 "Sword of the Dead" was moved drastically. The manga version happened after they left the Takasgi Estate, but the anime version had this scene placed directly before. The amphibious vehicle in the anime was something Saeko and Takashi found in a store. In the moment after Saeko reveals her past to Takashi, he surprises her by grabbing her hand and moving in for what appears to be a kiss. This implied kiss was not seen in the manga.
Saeko appears in the Highschool of the Dead OAD titled Drifters of the Dead. It was originally released as a Blu-ray and packaged with a special edition of Highschool of the Dead Vol. 7 on April 26th 2011. She's illustrated on the cover of this special edition in the very bikini she wears in the OAD. She and the rest of Team Takashi find themselves on a small, isolated island off the shore of Tokonosu City. After finding a small beach house filled with a variety of bikinis, they take this opportunity for a break from running. The boys search the island for food while the girls enjoyed the water and sun. Kohta got plenty of seafood and a fire was started. Only later did they realize the leaves they had put into the fire were hydrangea. This caused a hallucination in everyone who breathed in the fumes.
Much of what happens after this is hallucination. Saeko is seen alone with Takashi. She presses herself up to him and kisses him. After telling him that she's always wanted to be his, he pulls her to the ground and kisses her while pulling up her bikini top. Whether this was the hallucination of Saeko or Takashi is never explained. After everyone had sobered up, Saeko found herself heatedly making out with Rei and both were completely naked. Each had been imagining this whole time the other was Takashi. Takashi was later found dreaming and barely holding off four bikini clan Them, thinking he was holding off the advances of all the girls.
