Ryuk is a Shinigami, a death god, that was so bored one day he dropped his Death Note to see what would happen. He also has an obsession with apples.The Death Note is discovered by Light, and Ryuk follows him around for much of the series to see how Light
The only person that can see Ryuk is Light Yagami or anyone who touches his Death Note. When he dropped his Death Note, he left instructions written in English because that was the most widely used language on Earth.
Once Light came into possession of the Death Note, Ryuk decided to sit back and enjoy the show. Soon a battle between Light and the detective L began. Ryuk claimed to be on neither side. He would occasionally give Light information, mainly if it suited his needs, like getting access to more apples. In the show Ryuk is portrayed as a sort of ironic character. Despite being a Death God he doesn't ever go around killing people or say horribly evil things: being more of a comic relief character than a villain.
