Ryu Jose was a Chief Petty Officer aboard White Base when it initially docked at Side 7 to load on the V Project mobile suits. Following the attack by Char's forces, Ryu was looked upon as a strong figure to the civilians who were now manning the White Base. Going beyond that, Ryu provided valuable advice to the regular soldiers as well, namely Bright Noa. Being a dependable fighter he often was tasked to keeping track of the White Base crew, and curbing any insubordination that the irregular crew had issues with. Ryu particularly had faith in Amuro's fighting abilities and would often confront Amuro on his inescurities about himself.

Ryu was killed in action while the White Base was making its way across western Asia. While injured, having been shot during Ramba Ral's last ditch attack on White Base. Ryu piloted a core fighter after the remainder of Ral's troops had returned to attack White Base, Ryu saved Amuro's life by ramming the Core Fighter into a Magella Top, piloted by the late Ramba Ral's lover, Crowley Hamon. Ryu was killed in the action along with Hamon. He would be promoted to Lieutenant posthumously.
