Second reason and the most obvious is that it IS an Anime, meaning that sooner or later someone important will die or be separated from the group to be lonely. There is no trivia to it because all animes, happy or sad, it will always end up like this. If you watched as many animes as I did, you will not wonder how and why they do these things. It is the animators way of ending their anime and making it's viewers remember it for a period of time, just like what you are doing right now(you probably watched it last week and still thinking about it right now).

And if you think that this ending is sad then you haven't seen nothing yet.
