Loyd Lloyd is a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter force with the designation of "Y" - "The Yourself".
Royd is the younger twin brother of Loyd, and when they were born they were near indistinguishable for one another, being able to unconsciously copy each other perfectly since birth due to a connection they shared. They realised and understood this ability around the time of their 5th birthday, and by their 12th birthday, they realised that they could not only copy one another but were able to copy other people too.
Royd gained the ability to copy the likeness of others including their memories, knowledge and personality, while his older brother Loyd gained the ability to copy the likeness of others as well as their powers and abilities. At some point after this they were inducted into the Wandenreichs Sternritter and were both granted the letter of “Y”, which stood for “The Yourself”.
Royd Lloyd was created by Tite Kubo to serve as a secondary antagonist in his manga, Bleach. His first appearance was during Volume 56 of Bleach, Chapter 497, Kill The Shadow2, appearing as a fake Yhwach, then later in Chapter 510, The Extinction, as himself.
Royd, like his brother is a very tall man with a slender physique. His face lacks any notable features beyond the scar present at the centre of his forehead which is hidden by a "third eye", his head is bald and void of any hair, and his ears are covered by what appear to be small circular headphones with a small black trim around the edge. His attire consists of a standard white Sternritter officer uniform which is emblazoned with the insignia of the Wandenreich.
His appearance as a child is much the same, aside from the lack of a scar which would only appear at the age of 12, and a head of light coloured short hair.
Royds true personality is only seen moments before his death, mainly due to his ability of copying the emotions, personality and memories of his chosen target perfectly. But in these moments he is seen to have an extreme level of loyalty to the Quincy Emperor Yhwach, and gave his life willingly in service to the Wandenreich because he considered it an honour.
Royd first appears under the guise of Yhwach, having taken his appearance and memories with "The Yourself", when Kenpachi Zaraki meets him in the middle of the first invasion, dragging the corpses of Jerome, Berenice, and his older brother Loyd before him and throwing them at his feet. Kenpachi attacks him immediately causing a large amount of collateral damage, however he is seemingly defeated effortlessly off panel by Royd who holds the battered and bloodied Captain by the throat, mocking his power and wondering if he overestimated the power of the Special War Powers. However as Royd is about to announce the end of the invasion by ordering the collapse of the Soul Society, he is interrupted by the sudden and unexpected arrival of Yamamoto, who states he has come to put an end to him once and for all.
Before Yamamoto could take action against him however, he is ambushed by Bazz-B, As Nodt and NaNaNa Najahkoop, however before they can attack Yamamoto, he effortlessly takes them down with the immense power of Ryujin Jakka. Royd berates them for interfering in the battle and seeing the disappointment in Yamamotos eyes, begins to question what he wants to know, however Yamamoto launches a vicious attack against him, injuring Royds forearm in the process however Royd mocks anyway stating how he always loses himself to anger. Yamamoto furiously attacks again which makes Royd draw his Reishi Sword and negate the attack with his own causing a massive explosion in their vicinity. As the dust settled, Yamamoto thanked him for finally drawing his sword, stating he wants to obliterate him entirely as he finally releases his Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, causing the flames surrounding them to disappear and Yamamotos katana becomes charred and begins to release a light amount of smoke.
As Jugram beings to question if this really is his Bankai, Royd recalls the memories of Yhwach and beings to recount the details of Zanka no Tachi to him, reminding him in the process to not underestimate its power. However Royd also wonders if it's the same as when Yhwach encountered it 1000 years ago, to which Yamamoto mockingly replies that they can test it out on Royds body and find out.
Yamamoto begins to attack, just missing Royd but manages to make a small cut in his cloak, which causes Royd to wonder no flames burst forth from the cut and begins to question himself if it really is the same Bankai from 1000 years ago. As Yamamoto continues his attack, Royd manages to discern the real threat of Zanka no Tachi, stating that Yamamoto has managed to compress the power of his flames into the very tip of his blade, after witnessing the destructive power of the blade first hand when Yamamoto missed his attack once more and vaporised a large section of ground beneath them, which Yamamoto explains as Zanka no Tachis Higashi: Kyokujitsujin. Royd with a renewed sense of confidence however, tells him that he simply has to avoid the blade and attack him directly to win, but as he swings his blade towards Yamamoto, he is shocked to find that the upper part of his blade was vaporised instantly. Yamamoto tells him he should pay more attention when people are talking and reminds him that if there is an east, there must be a west, as he becomes shrouded in visible flames and calls the ability Nishi: Zanjitsu Gokui. Yamamoto then tells him that the heat of his shield reaches upwards of fifteen million degrees making him untouchable by physical means, telling Royd to think of him as the embodiment of the sun itself.
As Yamamoto begins to advance towards Royd, Royd beings to feel the effects of Zanjitsu Gokui, noting that his eyes throat and skin has started to dry up, and that he would have already been burned to ash had it not been from Blut Vene. Royd, in shock, attacks Yamamoto with one of his Holy Arrows only to have it deflected by Yamamoto, who mocks him further and begins a vicious attack of his own. Royd reminds him that Quincy have more than swords and arrows in their arsenal as he activates Kirchenlied: Sankt Zwinger, creating a powerful field of light around him that form into multiple crosses on all sides. He tells Yamamoto that this is the Quincy's "ultimate spell of protection" and warns him that should he step inside it's confines he will be torn apart by the "light of god". Yamamoto, unfazed by Sankt Zwinger, activates his third ability, Minami: Kaka Jumanokushi Daisojin, and raises hundreds of skeletal corpses which negate the effects of Royds protective spell and attack him in vast numbers overwhelming him in the process.
Royd, finding a sick irony in the fact the Captain of the Shinigami is raising the dead to fight on his behalf, laughs at him and begins to attack only to be halted when Yamamoto asks him to look carefully at the skeletons he is destroying. Royd then realises that he is attacking and harming his former subordinates, which angers him greatly. However as Yamamoto turns his back to him and begins to walk away, he becomes even more enraged when Yamamoto tells him to destroy his former comrades if he wishes to reach him. As Royd stands there in shock, Yamamoto wonders why he didn't take his Bankai from the very beginning, but then states a theory that details why Royd was unable to take it in the first place. Furious, Royd begins to destroy his former comrades bones shouting that he can't be stopped by the likes of this power, just as Yamamoto releases his final ability, Kita: Tenchi Kaijin, which instantly incinerates and obliterates a large section of his torso and left arm, causing him to fall onto the ground near death.
As Royd lay there, he begins to say that he is sorry to Yhwach he was unable to win the battle, an action that shocks Yamamoto to his core. As Yamamoto turns to face him once again, asking who he is apologising to, the first division barracks is obliterated in a large column of light at his back, and as Yamamoto turns back to see the destruction and shadowed figure appears behind him in front of Royd who has finally reverted back to his original appearance. The shadowed individual is revealed to be the real Yhwach, and he tells Royd that he has served him well, a statement that makes Royd extremely happy and tells Yhwach that it has been an honour, just before Yhwach destroys what is left of his body with a powerful Holy Arrow, killing him.
Royd is one of the strongest Quincy in the entire Wandenreich, given he was able to defeat Kenpachi (Prior to unlocking his true potential) effortlessly, and Yamamoto was unable to tell the difference between the real Yhwach and him, however this could have been the result of many different factors. Royd displayed a high level of skill in all Quincy powers including swordplay, archery, Reishi Manipulation, Quincy Spells, and Blut Vene. His skill with Quincy Spells was so great that he was able to casually activate, what he called, the ultimate in Quincy protective spell, Kirchenlied: Sankt Zwinger. And his Blut Vene was strong enough that he was able to withstand being in close proximity to Zanka no Tachi without turning to ashes.
Physically, Royd displayed a high level of speed, strength, and durability, shown when he both reacted to and blocked the first attack by Kenpachi with his arm directly, the side effect of which caused a violent explosion. His ranged attacks consist primary of Holy Arrows without the use of a bow, another sign of his high level of skill with Quincy combat skills. His physical weapon of choice is a Reishi manipulated ornate sword with an overly long handle and a winged cross-guard. However given he was copying the memories and mannerisms of Yhwach at the time, it's unknown if this sword was truly his own or just one of the real Yhwachs summoned in order to fool the Captain Commander Yamamoto. Given his high level of skill and status in the Wandenreich and the Sternritter, it's likely he also had access to their Quincy: Vollstandig too, but he never displayed the ability personally.
Blut Vene - A skill inherently known by all pure blooded Quincy. By allowing Reishi to flow through their veins, a Quincy is able to dramatically bolster their defence to levels where they are able to fend off direct attacks from a Captains Shikai. The defence is not completely absolute however, as sufficient power is able to tear through it, such as power from a Bankai or by a sufficiently powerful individual. Royds skill with this ability was so great that he was able to defend himself from the overwhelming power of being in close proximity to Yamamotos Zanka no Tachi.
Blut Arterie - The counter to Blut Vene, a skill inherently known by all pure blooded Quincy. By flowing Reishi through their arteries‘, a Quincy is able to boost their damage potential to incredible levels. Very little else is known about this skill, but it's said to be the only way a Quincy is able to deal sufficient and decent damage to a Bankai wielding Shinigami.
Kirchenlied: Sankt Zwinger - Sankt Zwinger is an extremely powerful spell, employed by Quincy in battle. It offers the ultimate form of protection a Quincy is able to summon by surrounding the Quincy in a field of light and Reishi, any enemies who step into the field of light will be rent asunder by the light of god. Based on the style of this spell and the general theme for Quincy, it's safe to assume that any person who steps inside the field’s confines will be reduced to Reishi particles and then absorbed by the field itself.
The Yourself - Signified by the letter “Y”, “The Yourself” is a special power granted to Royd and his brother Loyd by Yhwach. It allows Royd to copy the appearance and their memories, personality, and knowledge. Royd uses this in order to appear as a fake "Yhwach", which managed to fool the enemy completely and give the real Yhwach time to conduct business within the Soul Society unhindered. Unlike his brother Loyd, Royd is unable to copy the power and skills of his chosen subject, but he makes up for this by having an incredible level of natural power.
