Roronoa Zoro is a sword fighter once known as the Pirate Hunter who joins the Straw Hat Pirates as first-mate and aims to become the world's greatest swordsman to fulfill a childhood promise with his special three-sword style, Santoryu.
Roronoa Zoro as a young boy would travel from dojo to dojo to defeat the leaders and hone his skills and a swordsman against some of the best and he always won. When he came to Frost Moon Village's Isshin Dojo run by Koshiro, Zoro had to face the master's finest pupil, his daughter Kuina. Zoro was quickly defeated by the young girl who was only a few years older than himself. He would stay and train under Koshiro and constantly challenged Kuina. Even after 2,000 matches, he could never win. After a late night duel with real swords, she confided in Zoro how her father had no faith in her. She dreamed of being the world's greatest swordfighter, but thought as a girl when would grow weak and Zoro would defeat her as he grew older. The idea that Zoro would one day win not because of skill but biology infuriated the young boy. He made a promise with Kuina that one day they would both be great sword fighters and fight again to prove who was the best.
This childhood promise would never comes true when Zoro heard that Kuina had suffered a tragic accident and died from a fall down the stairs while returning the swords Zoro had borrowed. He was heartbroken that his greatest rival and friend could never fulfill their promise. After the funeral, Zoro asked Koshiro for Kuina's sword, the Wado Ichikmonji, to use as his own. If she couldn't become a great swordsman, he was going to use her sword to get there. He trained on the Frost Moon Village until he was 19 years old and developed his own Santoryu style. He went to Kuina's grave one last time before he went out to on his journey to becomes the world's greatest sword fighter.
Along Zoro's travels, he inadvertently earned the name "Zoro the Pirate Hunter". This was not by his own wish and only got the name because he would turn in the bounty on pirates he came across for food and expenses. It was during this time that he met two bounty hunters Johnny and Yosaku. They tagged along with Zoro, and he would then hear of the legendary sword fighter, Dracule Mihawk. The world recognized him as the world's greatest, and Zoro now knew who he had the challenge. He was approached by a man called Mr. 7 to take part in an organization called Baroque Works but told him he would only join if they made him the boss.
Roronoa Zoro is one of the main characters in the series One Piece that was created by Eiichiro Oda. In the original design, Zoro was intended to be a villain among the pirate crew of Buggy the Clown. Oda described the crew as a family unit, Zoro was described as the elder brother. He is a sword fighting human character with great skill and uses a peculiar style called Santoryu, a style that uses three swords. His design has short green-hair and no eyebrows. He has three golden-piercings worn on his left ear.
Zoro's first appeared in One Piece Volume 1, CH. 3 "Enter Zoro: The Pirate Hunter", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 1 " I’m Luffy! The Man Who’s Gonna Be King of the Pirates!". He has had separate voice actors for her adult version and another for her child version told in the flash back story in the Japanese and English versions of the series. His standard Japanese voice actor is Kazuya Nakai. The child version of Zoro was voice by Megumi Urawa. For the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is done by Chris Sabat. There were two actresses to voice Zoro as a child in the FUNimation dubs. Cynthia Cranz voices the child Zoro for episode 2, but any further flashback voice work for the child Zoro was handled by Brina Palencia.
"I'm going to be the world's greatest swordsman! All I have left is my destiny. My name may be infamous...but it's gonna shake the world!! But if you are making me become a pirate! So if I have to abandon my dream for any reason...then I'm going to make you commit Hara Kiri!!!"
— Roronoa Zoro "One Piece" Vol. 1 Ch. 6
Zoro's character has no changed dramatically from it's original design, but has had minor outfit changes throughout the run of the series. The only part of the outfits that has remained constant is the dark-green bandanna that he often keeps tied around his left arm. Only putting it on his head against incredibly strong opponents. Though Zoro is infamously known as the "Pirate Hunter", he has never called himself that. He would just hunt bounties to earn money on his travels to find the world's current greatest sword fighter, Mihawk Dracule. Zoro would cross paths with Mihawk during the Baratie Arc of the story and is easily defeated. So impressed with Zoro's resolve as a sword fighter, Mihawk would use his sword to place a massive slice across his chest that would leave a permanent scar. From that point on, Zoro swore to Luffy to become a man who would never lose in a sword fight again.
As the series progresses, Zoro develops as a sword fighter and gathered new blades of prominent history. In Baroque Works Arc in Alabasta, Zoro would achieve a personal goal of being a sword fighter who could cut even steal as he fought and defeated Daz Bones. In Skypiea, Zoro created a new blade strike that is a flying blade. Though Zoro uses a three sword style, he has different techniques for using one or two katanas. The one sword of Zoro that he has always been the most protective of is the Wado Ichimonji of Kuina. Not only is he a well known member of the Straw Hats, Zoro is a prominent member of the new age of rookie pirates called the Eleven Supernovas. One of the two who are not captains.
After the two year time gap that follows the crews greatest defeat against Bartholomew Kuma at Sabaody Archipelago and the events of the Whitebeard War at Marineford. Zoro was sent to Gloom Island, the current home of Mihawk. There he was trained to increase his power as a sword fighter. The most dramatic change in appearance is that he has a scar over his left eye and has possibly lost use of it. A notable mistake that was made in the original image of the Straw Hat crews' changes after the time skip on Chapter 598 splash page. Oda admitted he accidentally drew the scar over Zoro's right eye, but following this the scar is on the left eye.
While on his journey, Zoro can to the island of Shell Town and found the Marine commander's pompous son, Helmeppo, harassing the people with his rabid dog. Zoro cut the dog down when it threatened to attack a little girl named Rika. When Helmeppo threatened to retaliate against, the girl and her family. Zoro made a wager with him. He would surrender his swords and be tied to a stake in the Marine base for one month without food or water. After the month was nearly over, Rika tried to sneak food to Zoro and a young pirate boy in a straw hat named Luffy came to see him. Luffy would later return and wanted him as a member of his pirate crew. Luffy ran into the Marine base alone to get Zoro's swords, and a friend of his, Coby, arrived to try and free Zoro. Coby told him how they had heard Helmeppo didn't plan to honor his bet with Zoro and was going to execute him. A Marine firing squad arrived before he could be freed, but Luffy arrived to save them both, bouncing the bullets back from his body. Luffy freed Zoro, gave him his three swords, and together they defeated both Helmeppo and his tyrannical father, Axe-Hand Morgan. Coby sighed up to join the Marines on Shell Island, and Zoro left with Luffy on their little ship.
While traveling at sea, Luffy got caught by a giant bird that was flying away with him. Zoro tried to follow, but pirates drowning distracted him. They climbed on and tried to rob him, but that conflict ended with them doing all the rowing for him, after he beat them up. With Luffy out of sight, Zoro went to the closest island and found Luffy in Orange Town. He was locked in a heavy cubed cage and under threat from the Buggy Pirates. Zoro thought he defeated their captain Buggy, but soon discovered he had eaten the Chop-Chop Devil Fruit and couldn't be cut. Buggy was able to stab Zoro, but he turned their own canon against the pirate and had the young girl name Nami fire it. Zoro lifted Luffy in the cage and they all ran into town. Zoro was taken to the home of mayor Boodle to rest, but the house was blown up after Buggy fired one of his special Buggy Balls into town. He was unharmed and Luffy was now free of the cage. He left with Luffy to fight Buggy, and arrived to save the mayor. Zoro battled Buggy's own sword fighter Cabaji the Acrobat, and he kept striking at Zoro's earlier stab wound. He instead purposely cut open his own wound to serve as a handicap and still defeated Cabaji with his Oni-Giri attack. Zoro then left the fight against Buggy to Luffy and Nami as he took a nap. After he woke up, Luffy had blasted Buggy away and they had to run from the returning villagers who mistook them as the bandits.
While Nami and Luffy went into the Island of Rare Animals to explore, Zoro stayed a board their ship to sleep.
The crew came to Gecko Island and met a young man with a long nose who tried to scare them off from landing. His name was Usopp and he was trying to claim he had a million followers. He was revealed to be a lair, and was trying to protect the island from who he thought were dangerous pirates. Luffy and Usopp had a connection through Usopp's father, and he treated them to a meal in Syrup Village. Zoro went with Luffy to meet with Usopp's heiress friend Kaya in hopes of getting a ship. After Usopp clashed with Kaya's butler Klahadore, Zoro and Nami ran into an odd moon walking hypnotist named Jango. Klahadore was revealed to be the evil Captain Kuro who was plotting to kill Kaya for her wealth, and Jango was a member of his crew. The four banded together to try and stop the Black Cat Pirates landing, but their oil slick was on the wrong shore. Zoro got left behind in the oil slick, but caught up in time to save Nami and Usopp from the pirates. Captain Kuro arrived as Zoro was fighting Siam and Butchie from the Black Cat Pirates and threatened to kill them if they couldn't defeat Zoro. Zoro only had one sword and this made it hard to do anything other than defend against the pair. Nami was able to get Zoro his swords to defeat Siam, but Butchie was then enhanced by Jango's hypnotism. Once Butchie was finally finished off, Zoro went with Usopp, and they teamed up to save Kaya from Jango. Once Kuro and his crew were sent away, Kaya thanked the crew with a ship called the Going Merry and Usopp joined their crew.
Zoro had an unexpected reunion with his old friends Johnny and Yosaku out at sea, and they directed the crew to a place where they could get a pirate cook. The floating restaurant known as Baratie. Due to an accident with a Marine captain, Luffy damaged Baratie and was forced to work as a busboy to pay the damages. Zoro, Nami, and Usopp enjoyed the food and met the foul mouthed cook named Sanji. Baratie was soon attacked by the forces of Don Krieg, and Nami had stolen the Going Merry. Before Zoro could follow after Nami on Luffy's order. The person who Don Krieg had run from in the Grand Line arrived, Dracule Mihawk. Zoro couldn't refuse such a chance and challenged Mihawk. Zoro fought with all three of his swords, but Mihawk only used a small dagger to block Zoro's attacks. Mihawk was impressed that his blade was so close to Zoro's heart but he refused to back away from his dream. Mihawk took his Kokuto Yoru sword and faced Zoro one more time, shattering two of his swords in the process. Zoro posed no resistance to Mihawk's blade, saying scars on the back were the shame of a swordsman. This only impressed Mihawk more, and give him a final slash across his chest. Mihawk told Zoro that he would be waiting for him on the day he would become stronger and come after him, and Zoro called out to Luffy that he would never lose again. Johnny, Yosaku, and Usopp took Zoro and went after Nami on Luffy's orders, as he stayed to fight Don Krieg.
Zoro learned that Nami was heading for the Konomi Islands and wanted to charge in to fight, despite the city of Cocoyashi being occupied by the forces of the fish-man Arlong. Johnny and Usopp had to tie Zoro to the mast to stop him, but this only got him caught by the fish-men when Usopp and Johnny ran away. Zoro was taken to Arlong Park and Nami revealed that she was a member of Arlong's crew. Zoro was suspicious of her real motives and exposed her by jumping into the water while still bound. She jumped in to save him, and was taken inside. Nami arrived later to free Zoro and gave him back his swords, telling him to leave the island. While she was gone, Zoro made short work of the few fish-men still present, and he got a ride back into town by Hatchan. Zoro tried running back to Arlong Park after he heard Usopp had been captured and was literally run over by the ship Luffy was on with Yosaku and the crew's latest hire, Sanji. After Luffy refused Nami's request to leave without her, Usopp arrived. He was soon followed by Nami's sister Nojiko, who explained to the crew how Arlong had murdered their mother Bellemerre and was forcing Nami to make maps for him. She had been stealing from pirates to pay Arlong off for Cocoyashi to be free.
After Arlong betrayed Nami, Zoro, Luffy, and the rest of the small crew went straight to Arlong Park to defeated him. Luffy got thrown into the water thanks to his own sillyness and had a weight of concrete binding his feet. He defeated Hatchan's Six Sword Style with ease and turned his attention to Arlong. He fought against Arlong to let Sanji try and free Luffy, but Arlong was too strong and Zoro still was suffering from the injuries Mihawk had given him. Even Arlong was shocked after ripping off Zoro's bandages to see how injured he was but still so powerful. Luffy was soon freed and he switched places with Zoro, flining him into the distance. Zoro laid down to take a nap where he landed and didn't wake up until after Luffy won. He arrived to beat up the Marines who Arlong had been paying off, and the peopel of Cocoyashi celebrated for days. Zoro rested after having the local doctor finally tend to his wounds. Nami officially joined the crew, and they soon left for the Grand Line.
Before heading into the Grand Line, the crew went to Loguetown for the supplies tehy would be needing. Zoro borroed some money from Nami to buy some swords but she told him there would be interest. While looking for a store that sold swords, he ran into a young lady from the Marines who was arresting some rowdy pirates. He reached to pick up her glasses for her, but accidentally crushed them when he saw her face. She looked just like Kuina. She's named Tashigi and loves swords. She had no idea he was Zoro the Pirate Hunter. At the shop of Ippon-Matsu, Zoro was able to a cursed blade, the Sandai Kitetsu. To test if Zoro's luck was stronger than the curse. He threw it in the air and stuck out his own arm. The sword barely missed and stuck into the floor. So impressed with Zoro, the owner gave him a precious sword of his family, the Yubashiri. While in town, he learned about a ruckless and Luffy had been caught by Buggy. Zoro and Sanji tried to stop him from chopping off Luffy's head, but he was saved by a sudden bolt of lightening. As they ran from the Marimes back to the Going Merry, Zoro was confronted by Tashigi who had discovered who he really was. She wanted to defeated Zoro, and take his swords away. Zoro won their short duel, and she was angry that he refused to kill her, thinking it was out of pity or because she was a girl. This only pissed Zoro off. It was bad enough she looked like Kuina but even had the same ideals. Zoro joined the crw on their ship and escaped fro the Grand Line in the storm.
After escaping the Calm Belt and the Sea Kings within, Zoro and the crew found the entrance up Reverse Mountain and came back down. The roaring sound turned out to be a gigantic whale in the path of the exit. Zoro, Usopp and Sanji struggled to turn the ship, and Luffy had the insane idea to fire the cannon to top their momentum. It worked, but the figure head of the Merry was broken off. The Going Merry was soon swallowed by the whale, because Luffy punched the whale in the eye. Inside the whale's belly, they met the doctor Crocus. He told the crew about the whale named Laboon and his history. Laboon was trying to break through the Red Line to find some pirate friends who left him there fifty years ago, and injuries he was suffering threatened it's life. Zoro and the rest were astonished to watch Luffy suddenly attack the whale, then call off the fight. It was to create a promise with the whale not to hurt himself anymore and wait for him to return. To thank the crew, Crocus gave the crew a Log Pose then Nami agreed to give a strange pair of people a ride to the next island, Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9.
At the island of Whiskey Peak, the people surprisingly welcomed the crew with a huge party of food and drink. He pretended to go along with the celebrating, but he had remembered hearing about the island of bounty hunters. He overheard their plans to capture the crew, and made himself known. Zoro went along in the battle with the people of the island and tried to be gentle with some of the women. Every time they thought they had him, Zoro showed he couldn't be defeated. He discovered that Nami hadn't been fooled by these people either, but made a deal with their leader, Igaram. Miss Wednesday was actually Princess Vivi from Alabasta, and she was being hunted by two agents from Baroque Works. Nami told Zoro to protect Vivi, and when he asked why he should take any orders from her. She told him because he still owed her for the money she lent him in Loguetown. Zoro's was interrupted by Luffy attacking him for attacking the people. He didn't know they were bounty hunters, and was too angry to listen to reason. The two fought, and they clobbered Miss Valentine and Mr. 5 for trying to get involved. After Nami stopped the two's duel, she was able to explain to Luffy what was happening. Vivi explained to the crew how the Baroque Works leader was trying to take over his father's kingdom by covertly causing a civil war. During the conversation, Vivi accidentally slipped the leader's name was the Shichibukai, Crocodile. This had been overheard by two Baroque Works spies, and now they were now going to be hunted along with her.
Igaram tried to sail off alone to distract Baroque Works for them to sneak away, but his ship was blown up soon after leaving. Once back on the ship, Zoro found Vivi's pet duck Karoo, and they all met Crocodile's partner, Miss All-Sunday, as they were sailing away. With some power she was able to knock all the weapons out of their hands at once. She seemed to be trying to help them, but Luffy refused. Sh left without incident, and they sailed off.
Once at Little Garden, Zoro jumped ship to go for a walk after Luffy and Vivi went off alone. Sanji told him to bring back some animal for food, and Zoro agreed since Sanji couldn't do it himself. Not liking being made fun of bu Zoro, Sanji challenged him to a hunting battle. They both had to return with the largest animal they could to see who was the winner. On the island, Zoro found a triceratops and brought it back, and Sanji had a small tyrannosaurus. Not being able to settle on a winner, they both went out again. During this second hunt Zoro was captured by the combined efforts of Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek. He woke up to find himself in a diabolical wax trap or Mr. 3 with Vivi and Nami. It was going to kill them slowly by coating them in wax. When Zoro's idea of cutting off his own feet didn't work, he thought he should at least strike a pose to look cool. They were rescued by Luffy, Usopp, and Karoo by melting the wax trap with an oil soaked rope. Once freed, Zoro saved Usopp from Mr. 5. After the trouble was over, Sanji returned. He had talked to Crocodile over a transponder snail and convinced him they were all dead. He also had an Eternal Pose to Alabasta. The crew left the island escorted by the giants Broggy and Dorry, and left for Alabasta.
Their trip was detoured to find a doctor when it was discovered Nami had fallen seriously ill. After a clash with some pirates led by a man named Wapol, they found a winter island called Drum Island. They were allowed to come ashore by the town leader Dalton, but the only doctor on the island was at the top of the giant vertical mountain. Zoro stayed on the ship to train as Luffy carried Nami up strapped to his back and Sanji was their escort. After trekking through the cold for a while, Zoro found the a town being attacked by Wapol's men and he defeated them for their cold weather clothes. Dalton explained how Wapol was once the tyrant king of the island. Zoro carried Dalton to the rope way up to the castle so he could face Wapol. Though once at the top, Luffy had already defeated him. Nami had been treated by Doctor Kureha and her talking deer assistant, Chopper. Luffy convinced Chopper to join the crew, and they left celebrating their new member.
On the path to Alabasta, the crew accidentally picked up an odd man called Bon Clay. He could change his own form thanks to the powers of the Copy-Copy Fruit. He could even change into anyone if he had touched their face. Once he was reunited with his own crew and left, they discovered he was Mr. 2 of Baroque Works. He had seen them all but Sanji and touched their faces. The crew landed on Alabasta short on supplies and went into the town of Nanohana. There Luffy got stopped by Commador Smoker, who had followed the crew all the way from Loguetown. Their escape was covered by a pirate with the mark of the Whitebeard Pirates on his back. The crew was shocked to hear that this fire-powered young pirate was Luffy's older brother, Ace. He met up with them back on the ship to give Luffy a piece of paper, then he cleared the way for the Straw Hats by destroying the Baroque Work ships in their path by himself.
The crews long trek through the desert of Alabasta to Yuba, the rebels base, had been for noting since their leader's father, Toto, told them his son Koza was in Nanohana. Rather than go back through the desert, Luffy convinced Vivi to be willing to risk their lives with her's and go after Crocodile. They went to Rain Base, Crocodile's base, and it was filled with Marines, including Tashigi. Rather than face her again, he ran away. He ran into Luffy, Usopp, and Nami, and they ran into Crocodile's casino with Smoker on their tail. Luffy got them all trapped in a cage lined with Sea Prism Stone that none of them could escape. They met Crocodile who told Vivi about how he planned to destroy all the king's forces and rebels together to take over. He left with Miss All Sunday and started to flood the room they were in. Sanji appeared to save the day and forced Mr. 3 to open their cage. As they all tried to swim out, Luffy ordered Zoro to save Smoker. Once out of the water, Somker let them get away and the crew headed for the capital Alubarna. Luffy rescued Vivi from being grabbed by Crocodile and stayed behind to let the crew go on to stop the civil war.
The crew came up with an idea to all wear white robes to prevent the Baroque Works agents waiting for them to know which was Vivi. They separated into groups of twos and Zoro was with Nami. They were followed by Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger. Zoro faced Mr. 1 alone, but couldn't manage to cut the man with the powers of the Dice-Dice Fruit that made his body out of steal. As Zoro was near death, he reached a level of being able to hear the "breath of all things". He found his Wado Ichimonji in the rubble and sliced through Mr. 1's steel body to win. After a bit of rest, he ran into town and into some Marines who were helping to direct him north. They were trying to find a bomb that Crocodile had planted in town. Luffy returned after being defeated once before and went back to fight Crocodile again. Luffy eventually won his battle, and the war ended when he rain started to fall.
The crew was protected from the Mainres in the kingdom's castle, and after Luffy was awake they made plans to escape. They offered Vivi to come with them but gave her the chance to meet them on the island's east coast. They were assisted in their escape from Captain Hina by Bon Clay, and they went to the east coast as promised. Vivi was there, but only to say goodbye and ask if they could meet again if they would still be friends. Not being able to call after her because of the Marines nearby. They all held out the X marks they had put o their arms as a sign of their friendship.
Once the crew escaped capture, they discovered Miss All-Sunday and stowed away on the Going Merry. She asked Luffy to join the crew, and he surprisingly agreed with little protest. She gave her real name as Nico Robin and quickly won over the crew, but Zoro still didn't trust her. Soon the Log Pose was pointing to the sky and a giant pirate ship nearly crashed on them from the sky. They tried to salvage the ship but ran into a crew of professional salvagers. Robin stole their Eternal Pose to the island of Jaya, and Nami convinced Luffy to head there to find clues on how to reach the sky islands. They landed in Mocktown, and Nami told Luffy and Zoro not to get into any fights. In a local bar, Luffy was attacked by Bellamy, the captain of the Bellamy Pirates. Luffy gave the order not to fight back and Nami watched as they both took severe beatings from Bellamy's crew. Nami dragged them both out when the fight was over, but they both then stood up. Back on the ship, Chopper tended to their wounds, and Robin found a clue about a man on the east named Montblanc Cricket.
Cricket helped the crew to travel to the sky islands by modifying their ship to survive the Knock-Up Stream. While the crew went into the woods for a South Bird, they returned to find Cricket and his friends Masira and Shojo had been attacked and robbed by the Bellamy Pirates. Luffy went on to fight Bellamy, and Zoro explained to Nami why they didn't fight earlier. Fighting someone who wasn't challenging you or trying to stop you was pointless. Luffy returned just in time to head out for the Knock-Up Stream with Cricket's gold. On the way, the crew was approached by a large bearded man they had met in Mocktown. He was now after to catch them once he discovered their bounties. After the incident on Alabasta, Zoro now had an official bounty on him of 60,000,000 Berry. After falling into the enormous whirlpool, the Going Merry was blasted into the sky.
The crew landed in the White Sea and were recused from a bazooka wielding savage by a strange knight named Gan Fall on his flying horse Pierre. They found their way to Angel Island on Skypiea and met a lovely young woman named Conis and her father Pagaya. Conis explained to the crew about the forbidden area called Upper Yard that belonged to God Eneru. The place seemed like a great time for a vacation until the White Berets appeared since the crew refused to pay the entrance toll on their way in. The crew tried to sail away to save Conis any trouble, but she had been threatened to trick the crew to lift anchor. Zoro, Nami, Robin, and Chopper were the only ones aboard the Going Merry when a creature belonging to Eneru grabbed the ship and dragged it to a sacrificial altar in Upper Yard. Zoro went exploring with Nami and Robin, and returned by the time Luffy and the others had arrived. While they stayed on shore that night, Nami explained that Upper Yard was once a part of Jaya, and the city of gold Montblanc Cricket was after was here. They split into two groups. One after headed for the city of gold, and the others to the ship to ready their escape. Zoro was in the group looking for the city, but they were separated and he was wondering around lost. Zoro was attacked by the Shandian warrior Braham who used special Dials, like pistols. Zoro defeated him using a new flying blade technique 36 Pound Phoenix.
Zoro wondered all the way back to the Going Merry where he had started and was carried off by a giant South Bird who had grabbed his back pack for his food. It dropped him to save itself from the giant anaconda, and he landed in an area being guarded by Eneru's priest named Ohm. Ohm was using a cloud dial blade that could cut through stone, and Zoro won by using an even more powerful flying blade technique called 108 Pound Phoenix. The ground they were on was destroyed by a giant bolt of lightening, and he landed on a lower area with Gan Fall, Robin, and the Shandian warrior, Wyper. They faced off with God Eneru, but all were no match for his Rumble-Rumble Fruit powers. When Zoro was awake, Luffy was after Eneru and Nami went after him up the Giant Jack bean stalk. Zoro cut down the Giant Jack as requested by Nami and this allowed Luffy to deliver the final blow to Eneru and save Skypiea from destruction. After the celebration, Luffy led them to some gold he found while stuck in the anaconda's belly, and they were escorted off Skypiea with a farewell from the people by ringing the giant Golden Belfry Bell.
Once back in the Grand Line, the Going Merry landed on Longring Longland, and they were blocked fro leaving by the Foxy Pirates. They were challenged by their leader Foxy to a series of pirate games called the Davy Back Fight, and Luffy agreed. Foxy's team only won the first match dueto his cheating of using his Slow-Slow Fruit powers, and Zoro and Sanji were paired up for the third match called the Groggy Ring. They refused to work together, but after both tiring of the beating they were taking. They agreed to team up for thirty seconds. In that short time they defeated the Groggy Monsters by working together and Zoro made the winning goal. The final match was a fight against captains, and Luffy was able to pull out a victory y reflecting Foxy's slow bean back at him.
With the Foxy Pirates gone, they walked back to Tonjit's house. It was there they found the Marine Admiral Aokiji sleeping standing up. Robin was terrified to see him, but he claimed not to be interested in a fight. He even froze the Grand Line ocean using his Ice-Ice Fruit power to allow Tonjit to reunited with his wondering family. It was then Aokiji warned the crew that anyone Robin was associated with has been destroyed eventually. She attacked him, but her powers were of no use against him. Zoro defended Robin, but he was able to freeze her entire body. Lufy saved Robin from being crushed and tossed her to Nami and Chopper to rescue. Zoro's shoulder and Sanji's leg was frozen in the fight and they had to go back to the Merry. Once they defrosted their bodies in the ocean, they both returned to find Luffy frozen over and Aokiji missing. Luffy and Robin were both saved by Chopper and they went on to the next island.
After the crew got stuck on the tracks of a sea train and nearly run over. They met the conductor Kokoro and her granddaughter, Chimney. They were give a letter to take to the mayor of Water 7, who could help them with repairs to the ship. Zoro stayed aboard the Going Merry while the rest of the crew went into the island. Zoro was attacked by a gang in his sleep that thought they could capture him for his bounty, but he quickly defeated them and kicked them off the ship. He was woken again by a man he at first mistook as Usopp, but he was a shipwright named Kaku from the Galley-La Company. After he examined the ship, he determined that the Merry was suffering such damaged that she'd never sail to another island. Usopp had later been attacked and robbed of the 2 Million he was carrying by the same guys who tried to capture him earlier. Zoro joined Luffy, Sanji, and Chopper in retaliating against the Franky Family for the attack on Usopp and to gain the money back. They won the fight easily, but the money was gone. That night Usopp refused to follow Luffy's orders to abandoned the Going Merry, and he left the crew. The two later dueled Luffy for the ship, Usopp lost against while the crew watched, and they all took their things and left the ship with Usopp.
Robin had gone missing the day before, and word had spread she was a part of a gang who tried to assassinate the mayor, Iceburg. Zoro was chased around by the town's poeple who thought the Straw Hats were a part of the attack. After he met up with Chopper, Luffy, and Nami. They agreed to stake out outside Iceburg's home to wait for Robin. The house was attacked and Luffy rushed in with his crew following. They discovered Robin was a part of the team who tried to kill Iceburg, but the people she was assisting was the World Government's black ops team, Cipher Pol 9; and Kaku with other Galley-La Workers were among them. Luffy and Zoro were quickly defeated by the CP-9 and tossed form the building. He landed inside a chimney and was stuck. Chopper later found him and give him the Sandai Kitetsu he had dropped. He cut himself free just in time for them to escape from the gigantic Aqua Laguna storm that his Water 7.
It was revealed that Robin had only helped the CP-9 to try and save the crew from attack and was going to Enies Lobby with them by sea train to her death. The crew teamed up with the Galley-La Workers and the Franky Family to take the spare sea train the Rocket Man to save Robin. After breaking through the waves of the Aqua Laguna, Zoro defeated the Marine Captain T-Bone who tried to block their path. They caught up with a section of the train Sanji had been on and Usopp was with him. He was wearing a mask and calling himself Sogeking. Only Luffy and Chopper were fooled. When the Galley-La Worker Paulie tried to discuss their attack plan. Luffy had already jumped into the World Goverment stronghold alone. Paulie did ask that Zoro to tell Kaku for him that he was fired.
Zoro and the others waited as the Franky Family and the Galley-La Workers defeated the giant guards and opened the gates. The Rocket Man crashed into Enies Lobby, and Zoro and Sanji got caught up in Nami's lightening attack. They fought their the thousands of guards to the top of the Tower of Judgement and met up with Luffy. Robin was across the chasm in the Tower of Justice with, Franky, the CP-9, and their commander Spandam. On Luffy's command, Usopp burned the World Government flag to show how dedicated they were to saving Robin. The Rocket Man was repaired and the crew jumped aboard to use it to jump the chasm that separated the towers. After the crash, the CP-9 member Fukuro told them that each of the CP-9 in the tower had a key, but only one was the real key to Robin's Sea Prism Stone cuffs. Luffy went after Robin, the crew split up, and Zoro found Kaku. He now had the devil fruit powers to change into a giraffe-man. Their battle caused the floor to crumble below them, and they crashed where Usopp was with Jabra. In the commotion, Zoro accidentally got cuffed with Usopp. To try and fight, he had Usopp hold one of this katana while he lifted Usopp. They were eventually freed from each other, and Zoro was able to defeat Kaku and give him the message from Paulie.
The CP-9 members were eventually defeated, and the crew tried to catch up with Luffy. They were led to an underwater tunnel to the bridge Robin was on, but it was flooded. They were saved bu Kokoro, who revealed she was a mermaid. Though saved from drowning, they were all surrounded by the Marine Buster Call. He clashed with Captain Shuu, who used his devil fruit powers to destroy the Yubashiri. Luffy was able to defeat the CP-9 leader, Rob Lucci; but couldn't move and was vulnerable. They were able to escape on the Going Merry that had sailed there on it's own. Once free, the Going Merry split in two. They were saved by Iceburg's ship that arrived, and the crew gave the Going Merry a viking funeral to say goodbye.
Back on Water 7, Luffy was asleep for three days, and Franky arrived to both apologize for robbing them and to offer to build them a ship with the wood he purchased with that money. Zoro had gotten lost in the city when he heard the Marines arrived on the island and were heading for Luffy. Both Luffy and Zoro were attacked by two Marines who turned out to be Coby and Helmeppo. They won easily against their old acquaintances, but the Marines were under the command of Vice-Admiral Garp, Luffy's grandfather. With Lufy awake, there was a city wide party as they waited for their ship to be built. Zoro did put his foot down as first-mate that they could not accept Usopp's return to the crew unless he apologized. The Franky Family arrived in a rush on the day of completion with the news how the crew now all had bounties, and Zoro's had climbed to 120 Million. Franky now had a bounty and the Franky Family asked them to take him with them. After convincing Franky to join through force, the ship set sail, and they were under attack room Garp. They nearly left Usopp behind until he begged for forgiveness. After they named the new ship the Thousand Sunny, they escaped capture using the amazing gadgets Franky had built into the ship.
While sailing for Fish-Man Island, the crew got caught in the Florian Triangle, and ran along side a ghost ship with a living skeleton aboard. Luffy want to explore, and he came back with the skeleton as part of the crew. His name was Brook, and he had eaten the Revive-Revive Fruit. The Thousand Sunny was soon captured inside gate of a giant floating island called Thriller Bark. Brook ran alone into the island for the man who had stolen his shadow, and Nami, Usopp, and Chopper crashed on land while playing with the Mini Merry. The crew was then attacked by an invisible creature, then they went onshore to find Nami and the others. They were attacked by a Cerberus, that Luffy tamed; ghosts that broke your spirit if they passed through you, then a horde of zombies. They went to the castle on the island and met by an old man who's shadow was also stolen by Gecko Moria, a member of the Shichibukai.
Zoro was captured soon after they began exploring the mansion of Dr. Hogback. He was taken to Gecko Moria who stole his shadow and placed it in a zombie named Jigoro. The unconscious Zoro was taken back to the Thousand Sunny with Sanji and Luffy, who's shadows were also stolen. When woken up, they learned that Nami was captured, and Brook was member of the pirate crew that Laboon had been waiting for. The crew splits up to go after Moria and save Nami. Franky, Zoro, and Sanji are attacked by a giant zombie Oars that has Luffy's shadow. Franky and Zoro get away to find Brook defeated at the hands of a samurai zombie, named Ryuma, who has his shadow. Zoro battled Ryuman for the sword he carries. He wins and claims the Shuusui as his own. The crew, minus Luffy, team up to try and defeat the giant Oars, but his size and power are too much. It only gets worse when it starts to mimic Luffy's own attacks with the help of Moria. Luffy returns powered up by shadows, but that effects wears off. They all over to play a role in biding Oars down so Luffy could deliver the finishing blow.
In a desperate act, Moria absorbed all the shadows of his zombie army, and Luffy defeated him just as the sun rose and could of caused everyone missing their shadow to evaporate in the daylight. Luffy was now unconscious, but the danger wasn't over. Another Shichibukai called Bartholomew Kuma appeared for Luffy's head. He created a shock wave that knocked everyone out but him and Sanji. Zoro knocked Sanji out for trying to sacrifice himself, and he offered his own life in exchange for Luffy's. Kuma used his powers to expel all the pain from Luffy's body, and offered it to Zoro to take on. Despite the suffering he felt from the small sample gave, Zoro reached in with both arms to take it all. When Sanji woke up, he found Zoro standing alone, covered in blood, and refusing to say what had happened. Zoro was asleep for a while after that. Once awake, he buried the Yubashiri on Thriller Bark, and Brook told him he had seen Zoro's earlier sacrifice. The Straw Hats set sail from the island to continue their journey with a new member.
The crew reached the Red Line but couldn't find a way down to Fish-Man Island. After Luffy resuced a mermaid named Camie and a talking starfish named Pappagu, she told them of someone that could help, but they were sidetracked when a friend of her's was captured by the Flying Fish Riders. They went to save him, but this friend turned out to be Hatchan from the Arlong Pirates. They refused to help until Camie was captured and Nami gave the okay to help their now reformed enemy. Once the leader Duval was defeated, they took Hatchan, and he escorted them to Sabaody Archipelago to meet someone who could give their ship the needed coating.
On Sabaody Archipelago, Zoro left for a walk and got lost. He had misread the grove the ship was docked at as Grove 1 when it was Grove 41. He wondered around, and nearly cut down one of the world nobles, The Celestial Dragons, who took a shot at him. He was only stopped at the last second by one of the Eleven Supernova captains, Jewelry Bonney. After scolding him for the trouble he nearly caused, he took the man Saint Charlos had shot to a doctor. He was then picked up by Luffy riding with the Flying Fish Riders. Camie had been kidnapped and was being sold at a slave auction. They crashed into the auction house. Hatchan was soon shot by Saint Charlos. Zoro was ready to slice him with his sword, but Luffy had punched him first. A battle erupted, but it was ended by the coating engineer that Hatchan had been talking about. He used a power that caused nearly everyone around them to pass out. Once they were able to escape the Marines who surrounded the auction house, they gathered to the bar of Shakuyaku. The old man introduced himself as Silvers Rayleigh, the former first-mate of the Roger Pirates. He told them the true story of how Gold Roger wasn't captured, but turned himself in.
After agreeing to coat their ship, Rayleigh gave them each a piece of Vivre Card so they could find him while they waited three days for the world to be finished. They didn't get the chance to hide and were attacked by what seemed to be Bartholomew Kuma. It took all their efforts to destroy what turned out to be just a cyborg copy. Sentomaru appeared with another from the PX-Series, and later Admiral Kizaru. Zoro still hadn't recovered from his injuries from Thriller Bark and was nearly killed by Kizaru. When the real Bartholomew Kuma appeared, he used his devil fruit powers to cast Zoro away from Sabaody Archipelago and into the air to land on a distant island. The rest of the crew suffered the same fate and were sent to different islands. It was the Straw Hats greatest defeat.
Zoro was still seriously injured when he landed on Gloom Island, and he was found by Perona, the ghost girl from Thriller Bark. She tended to his injuries and watched over him while he rested. Once he was awake, they went around to explore and she tried to lead him to the island's shore. They came across a giant crucifix carved from a tree in a ruined town, and Zoro could sense the danger of someone in the distance.
The presence Zoro felt surrounding him and Perona turned out to be large apes that could use weapons and tried to kill Zoro. They might of succeeded if they hadn't been scared off with the appearance of Dracule Mihawk. Gloom Island is where he had been living for some time now and he had shocking news. He had seen Luffy on Marineford during the war between the Marines and Whitebeard Pirates, and Luffy watched his brother Ace be killed in front of him. Zoro was desperate to leave to get to where ever Luffy was, but these apes kept blocking him. They were even using Zoro's own techniques against him. When the paper arrived, the pages had a story of Luffy returning to Marineford and a picture. He knew this sort of action wasn't like Luffy and Rayleigh was reported to be seen with Luffy. After examining the photo for a long time, he noticed the code that was written on the photo of Luffy's arm. It said "
3D2Y". It was a code to the crew that they wouldn't be returning in three days as planned, but in two years. After defeating all the ape, Zoro went to Mihawk bowing and asking for his training. He called the act shameful and asked why he should train a man after his head. Zoro told him it was to overcome him. Mihawk laughed at the idea but agreed. He had Perona tend to Zoro's wounds, and they would start once he was healed. For two years Zoro trained to become a stronger sword fighter.
After two years he sails to journet along with his crew.Slowly the ship sinks in the direction of the straw hats seabed, where the crew can not get enough of the beauty under water. Zoro just bored commented that he has just seen it all before. He and his captain now want to catch some of the tasty fish under water, however, Usopp and Chopper get a head nut, as they fear to have their bladder coating. Nami says now that it's okay to make holes in, and there leaves the bladder through this. Only multiple holes they bring to burst. As for now Luffy Gomu Gomu no Gatling wants to start and Zoro pulls out his swords to see who catches the most fish, they get another clout. But allowed them no rest, even under water, than that of Momu drawn Caribou band of pirates will board them and rams, but only the captain Caribou reached the ship as the draft animal recognizes the straw hats and flees. This recoils when he sees Zoro is tied and then by Captain Luffy. This is possible because his Logia keeps secret forces.
The journey continues and now Nami explains the course of the currents , which the straw hat and Zoro very little interest. You sip some tea and talk over the past two years, when they arrive at even an underwater waterfall and the octopus comes out, the countless times larger than the Sunny. Luffy but merely smiles and takes the right to take him as a pet.A demonstration of the power that they get as the Caribou pirate gang arrives again and is crushed with only one of many tentacles. With another, he swings the Straw Hat pirate gang that is held back during one of Usopp Chicken Voyage is used. The eggs hatch after this evasive maneuvers Luffy, Zoro and Sanji on caribou proposal into a Bataashi coating and the trio goes on the attack. The captain forbids him to violate his Nakama, however, because it is his future pet. The pirate hunters entgegenet him but that he should be there already faster than him. While Luffy uses his Busōshoku coca prepared in full swing and the fight Zoro is also proposing that the octopuses with no Tsuji Santōryū Ogi Rokudo off a tentacle, which he angered his captain. This beats the monster and then KO them are drawn together with the animal and Sunny in the fall.
Zoro is a proponent of a self-created style called the Santouryu or the three sword style. With the Santouryu, Roronoa simultaneously uses three swords (one in each hand and one in his mouth) when fighting an opponent. Initially, Zoro started using two swords back when he was still a kid but after Kuina's death and after having the Wadō Ichimonji passed on to him, he developed his three sword style. Although having the three sword style, Zoro also uses the Nitōryū or the two sword style and the Ittōryū or one sword style. Zoro is adept at using any of his styles, whether Ittōryū, Nitōryū or Santouryu
Zoro, being a swordsman, is always seen with three katanas at his side. Zoro has changed his swords throughout the series save for one: the Wadō Ichimonji. Zoro owns two of the 21 Great Edges and excellent grade sword as his weapons
A common mistranslation to Zoro's swords is to add the word Meitou to the front of the names. Meitou is not a name, but shows a status of the blade. It shows that there is a history or tale behind the history of the sword.
During his current adventures he uses the following swords;
For one reason or another, Zoro has one or more of his swords destroyed or incapacitated in some way
Zoro's agility, speed, and overall reflexes are also extraordinary; in numerous occasions, Zoro has shown being able to evade (or block) high-speed attacks and projectiles that would normally be impossible for an average human to perceive, much less intercept. He also has unreal strength, as seen in the fight against Mr. 1 where he literally throws a building at his opponent.
Eventually Zoro learns to hone the focus of his blade to cut through virtually any high density alloy such as steel. This ability only manifests after he comprehends the presence or "breath" of all things in nature. By controlling the intent of his blade to either kill or protect he can then determine what he ends up damaging. At first he can only achieve this focus with the single sword Lion's Song stance but he later improves the technique to handle nine simultaneous slashes in his Ashura stance.
Through extreme physical and mental conditioning Zoro is able to make his sword slashes to fly through the air like projectiles. The underlying idea is that his muscle mass allows his blades to strike the air with such force that the attack pushes the wind into a cutting force. He begins mastering this technique in the Skypiea arc.
While a member of the Straw Hat crew, every member has a personal Jolly Roger. Zoro's is marked by his bandanna, two swords instead of cross-bones and a sword in it's mouth
For the English production of the manga and anime of One Piece, Zoro's given name was changed to "Zolo" due to worries over possibly copyright issues with the fictional Mexican sword fighter, Zorro. Though, for the subtitles produced by FUNimation on DVD the Zoro name was kept.
Since Zoro is one of the earliest member to join the main cast of One Piece story. He has appeared in some form in ever product based on the series. The fifth movie of the series, One Piece: Curse of the Sacred Sword (2004) was based mostly around Zoro.
Two robots with the appearance of Roronoa Zoro and Rock Lee were seen on the cover of the U.S. published series Ninja High School in the April 2005 Issue.
The Zoro robot has his most iconic outfit and is holding three separate swords, including one in his mouth. The Rock Lee robot is hanging on a volleyball net. It has his classic green jumper, leg weights, bowl-cut dome, and round, beady-eyes. The Millennium Falcon (Star Wars 1977) is seen floating in the background. The artist who drew the cover is Fred Perry, creator of Gold Digger.
