In her early life, Riza lives with her father who is a state alchemist. Her father, Berthold Hawkeye, is bent on perfecting the flame alchemy and before he died of an illness, he tattooed onto Riza's back, a transmutation array formula for the alchemy in code. This prevents people to learn the code to use it for evil. Roy Mustang is present when Berthold Hawkeye died, and at Berthold's funeral, Roy shares his dreams with Riza about being the cornerstone of Amestris and protecting the people. Riza finds Roy's dreams admirable and reveals her father's code on her back. Roy deciphers the code and passes the State Alchemist exam with the knowledge of flame alchemy.

Later on, Riza has become a top soldier with remarkable sniping abilities which the military has sent her to the front lines in the Ishval war. There, she encounters the atrocities of the war and meets Roy. She tells Roy about how her ideals of justice and skills are being used for murder. She has also witnessed the change in Roy and how destructive his flame alchemy can be. After the war, Riza asks Roy to burn the tattoo on her back to prevent another creation of a flame alchemist. Also, Roy asks Riza to kill him if he ever strays off the path of justice and his dreams of becoming the cornerstone of Amestris.

Riza's last name is also based on an airplane are called Grumman E-2 Hawkeye. This is a common theme where Arakawa has named many characters based off machines. Also, her last name, Hawkeye, refers to her excellent sniping abilities with the sharp eyes of a hawk. There are speculation behind the meaning of Riza because in Hungarian, it means "guardian." It fits her role in guarding the secrets of the flame alchemy knowledge and her role of protecting Roy Mustang.

Evolution

Appearances

Young Riza had short blonde hair with her bang slightly covering her left eye. In contrast to her present self, she has grown her hair long when she meets Winry Rockbell in Resembool. Though, Riza ties her hair in a bun, so it would not restrict her movement on the battlefield. She has dark, brown eyes and a slender yet muscular build. In the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OVA: Simple Person, it is noted that she has silver studded earrings. On her back, she has her father's transmuation array tattoo. In the present, her tattoo is burned by Roy at Riza's permission. Arakawa also commented that Riza's broad shoulders and flared hips come from military training.

Personality

She is a very reserved, strict, and stoic person who shows little emotions. Despite her rigid exterior, she has soft side when she interacts with Winry and Black Hayate, her dog. The only times Riza breaks down are when she attempts to fight Lust to the death and when she demands Roy to let her kill Envy. In her fight with Lust, Riza breaks down to tears when Lust lied about killing Roy. For her younger self, she revealed signs of being disillusioned by the atrocities of the Ishval war when she talks to Roy.

Relationships

  • Roy Mustang - Riza and Roy are very close to each other to the extent that they trust and protect each other with their lives.
  • Edward Elric - When Edward asks questions and begins to have doubts about his goals, Riza shares her experiences and views with Edward and her words motivate Edward to keep going forward. Edward understands that the both of them are committed to bring peace to Amestris. In one scene, Riza gives Edward, a gun. When Edward calls it a weapon of destruction, Riza corrects him that it is used for protection.
  • Winry Rockbell - Similar to Edward's relationship, Riza is a pillar of support for Winry. When Winry doesn't like how Ed and Alphonse became soldiers, Riza tells her that they became soldiers to protect their loved ones.
  • Black Hayate - Even though Riza makes Black Hayate follow strict orders like a soldier, she gives her dog lots of affection especially in times of great stress. Her loyal dog fights to protect Riza. For example, when Gluttony grabs Riza by the neck, Black Hayate attacks Gluttony.
  • Rebecca Catalina - Rebecca is Riza's best friend who is the opposite of Riza, an outgoing, sassy woman. She asks and teases Riza with topics such as having a boyfriend. Rebecca can make Riza angry with comments when Rebecca thinks Riza seduce her way to the top positions.
