When Tohsaka Rin can't get in touch with her friend Kotone, she braves the darkness and enters the city on her own to search for her. That's when she spots a strange man leading two kids around and decides to follow him.

Plot Summary

Before the Holy Grail War

Rin Tohsaka practices her magic on a gem stone. It takes form and explodes. Tokiomi finds Rin. At school, Rin defends her classmate from bullies. Back at Rin who just failed at casting a spell, Tokiomi tells her to focus in order to control mana. He demonstrates how it can backfire and how to do it properly. He creates a horse out of the gem, and at school, Kotone thanks Rin. Rin gets asked a lot by her classmates. When the happy days behind, Rin is sad that she has to move away because of the Holy Grail. Tokiomi states that they are much safer outside of Fuyuki City. Rin tries to be helpful by cracking a spell book. Yet, they are booby trapped or hard to read. Tokiomi saves her and gives her a Mana Compass. The compass can react to traces of mana.


Rin hears the rumors about the the kidnappings of many children, and she calls Kotone to check up on her. Later that night, Rin notices her compass is reacting, and she follows where the compass points. She walks into an alley where she spots Ryuunosuke walking with a child. Rin quickly hides from the police and Ryuunosuke who has two little boys. She gets a hold of herself and runs towards the source of mana. Finding a stairwell, she walks slowly and opens a door to find Kotone fainted on the floor. Then, Ryuunosuke appears and finds Rin. He states that he is going to start the party, and Rin screams once she sees the children over there. He tries to grab Rin, and Rin notices something odd with Ryuunosuke's bracelet. Rin drops something on Ryuunosuke's feet and attempts to overpower the bracelet. After the bracelet breaks, all the children begin to cry. Rin tells everyone to run away.

Moments later, the police help the children, and Rin's compass reacts violently. Suddenly, a tentacle monster drops down in front of Rin. Then, a swarm of insects pass Rin and engulfs the tentacle monster. As Aoi searches for her daughter, she finds Rin sleeping on a bench. Kariya reassures Aoi that Rin's okay. Once Kariya reveals his disfigured face, Aoi gets scared. Kariya explains that he is going to win the Holy Grail to save Sakura. Aoi asks Kariya if he's going to take down Tokiomi as she cries. When Rin cries, her mother embraces her.

Elsewhere, Kirei asks Tokiomi about course of action he should take with Rin and Aoi. Tokiomi asks Kirei to follow Kariya. Rin narrates her montage as she continues to work hard in mastering gem magic and in her studies.
