Rice is a staple of the diet through out Asia. They are firm grains that are softened when boiled and one of the most complex carbohydrates.
The legend behind Rice is that it takes 88 steps to produce. This can be seen in the Kanji for rice (kome). It is also the same kanji for "88 years old".
If you were to separate the strokes of the kome kanji (米) you can also have the same number of strokes for the number 'eighty-eight' (hachi-juu-hachi). 8(八) 10(十) 8(八). Flip the first eight(八) upside down and combine with the remaining ten(十) and eight(八). Once together you get the kome kanji (米).
