Revy is the muscle of the Lagoon Company couriers known as Two Hands in the corrupt Thailand city of Roanapur.
Rebecca (レヴェッカ, Revekka) is of Chinese/American decent who was born and grew up in Chinatown, New York. She was raised by a man who beat and abused her. She tried to put her faith in things like God and justice, but she was either ignored by the police or beaten by them for false charges. One night, she put a pillow over her abuser and killed him with a gun. She was now on the run for murder. She had even been thrown in jail once. It was years later that she found her way to the Thailand city of crime and corruption called Roanapur. She was hired by Dutch as his muscle for the Lagoon Company Couriers, and he gave her the the nickname Revy. She had two custom guns crafted called the Sword Cutlass, and her proficiency with duel wielding earned her the name "Two Hands".
During one of their jobs, Revy rescued a talented hacker named Benny. He then joined the Lagoon Company as hacker and mechanic.
Her first appearance was in Black Lagoon Volume 1 CH. 0 "Black Lagoon", and her first anime appearance was in Black Lagoon - Episode 1 "The Black Lagoon". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi, and the U.S. dub produced by Ocean Group is done by Maryke Hendrikse.
In the original first chapter, Revy had dramatically shorter, shoulder-length hair than she did in the following series. Her hair could hardly be pulled back into a small ponytail. Her hair though becomes dramatically longer in the middle of Chapter 1 " Ring-Ding Ship Chase". Her hair was hardly ever seen out of her ponytail design after these chapters.
Revy, Dutch, and Benny were hired by Hotel Moscow's leader, Balalaika, to hijack a ship owned by Asahi Heavy Industries in order to steal a disc from one of their workers. Along with the information, Revy thought to take Rokuro Okajima as a hostage they could ransom off for extra pay. Dutch pointed out the flaws in her plan and they took him back to Roanapur with them. Dutch named the guy "Rock", and they went to the Yellow Flag. While Dutch was away, Revy and Rock got into an argument that turned into a drinking contest. The bar was then filled with massive gunfire from a private military group hired by Asahi Industries. Revy killed several, but they made their escape to the Black Lagoon torpedo boat.
While out at sea, they were attacked by the mercenary leader Captain in an armored helicopter. They were chased into a river with a dead end and no way to escape. It was either face off against Captain in a fight they couldn't win or wait for him to come after them. It was Rock who came up with an insane place to entice Captain into a game of chicken. Dutch piloted the Black Lagoon to ramp off of a capsized ship to launch them self in the air and fired the torpedoes to hit the copter point blank and kill him. They later passed the disc on to Balalaika, who then sold the evidence of corruption back to Kageyama. Rock refused Kageyama's offer to return to Japan, and Revy invited him to join the Lagoon Company.
A couple days later, Revy and the others were hired on a job that turned out to be a trap set up by the crime boss Chen. Revy was teaching Rock about ropes and they talked about their lives before becoming pirates. Soon after, Chen's man Luak chased after them with his small army of armed pirate ships. Revy made short work as she leapt from boat to boat killing them with a machine gun and grenade launcher. After they got home, Dutch was called by Balalaika to let them know she had Chen killed, then Dutch took them out for drinks.
While dropping off a shipment of weapons, they were given a package to return to Roanapur for the Colombians. It turned out to be a young boy named Garcia Lovelace, who claimed he was the son the leader of one of the thirteen largest crime families in South America. The kid was a pain to Revy, and in the Yellow Flag he talked about how strong their family maid Roberta was. Revy liked the idea of facing off against her, and she didn't have to wait. A blast rang out in the bar, and Garcia recognized the attacker as Roberta, as she was fighting with Abrego and his men. Revy tried taking Garcia hostage when Roberta noticed he was with them, but tried taking cover behind the bar from the machine gunfire when that proved fruitless. She was hit in the air while jumping and was knocked out after she landed.
By the time Revy woke up, she was in Benny's car and they had crashed in the shipping district. She and Roberta faced off, and their stalemate was brought to an end by the appearance of Balalaika. When they both refused to drop their guns, Balalaika's snipers shot them out of their hands. Revy watched as Balalaika revealed to Garcia that Roberta was an former FARC terrorist. Revy didn't care about the happy ending as Garcia didn't care about Roberta's past sins, and she wanted payback from being shot in the arm. Dutch suggested a fist fight, and Roberta got the first shot in when Revy fell for the shoelace trick. The two fought for a long time and shouted at Rock who tried to stop it. It ended with them both going down, but it was Revy who was unconscious.
The Lagoon Company was hired for a deep sea salvage of a recently discovered WWII German u-boat. Someone was paying to have them get a painting that was on the submarine. Rock and Revy were the ones who dove down, and they eventually found the painting. Rey then went to loot some of the corpses of old medals and items she could sell to collectors. Rock though gave her a hard time about this out of a sense of honor for the dead. Revy then explained that in the past she had no faith in God only money and give him a brief rundown of her past. She refused to let him pity her, as well; and warned him that if he pulled that goody-goody stuff again that they'd no longer be friends and she'd kill him. The tension was broken as a group of Neo-Nazi's also raided on the sub. Rock lost the painting to them in the gun fight, and they chased after them to their boat. The two barely escaped the gunfire by diving and reunited with Dutch and Benny.
After nightfall, Revy and Dutch secretly boarded the Neo-Nazi's ship for some payback. Still pissed about her earlier argument with Rock, Revy killed everyone she saw, including the hostage ship's crew. Dutch confronted her about acting like a crazed gunman, but they did save each other when attacked. While Ducth went to meet the leader, Ratchman; Revy met Blitz Stanford and killed him. She tossed Ratchman one of her guns to end his own life, but he aimed on Dutch and pulled the trigger. The gun wasn't loaded, then she and Dutch finished him off. Dutch asked what was going on between her and Rock, but all she said was that she could no longer work with him.
Dutch was forcing Revy and Rock together when she forced her to tag along with Rock while they did simple errands around town. As Rock kept trying to make conversation, she kept shooting him down. They went to Rowan Pigeons' club, to report to Balalaika, and ended at the Church of Violence to meet with Yolanda and Eda about their weapon order. Revy pulled her gun when they were refusing to deliver on the full order, but the standoff was ended when Rock pointed out he noticed the church was dealing in drugs without Hotel Moscow's knowledge.
After Rock got their dinner, Revy told Rock he could go back to Japan. This sparked an argument as he surprised her by saying he wasn't going to apologize to her. Pissed off, she aimed at his head and pulled the trigger. The bullet only grazed his head because Rock had grabbed her gun. He yelled at her about having no sense of morals and settled everything with violence, and she punched him. He then grabbed her by the wrist and told her that she was the one who set him free. He couldn't stand watching her become the same kind of greedy bastards who sold him out. Though the air between them was cleared, their fight got them arrested by Chief Watsup. While in the back of the cop car, she had Rock give her a light with his cigarette. After some paperwork, they both went home.
Roanapur was being hit with a string of murders attacking the officers of Hotel Moscow. The Yellow Flag was filled with armed men and Bao told Revy that there was a $50 Grand bounty in American dollars was being offered, Eda appeared to invite Revy to join her in chasing that bounty and the city was filling with hitmen. The next day, word was out that Balalaika was bringing out her elite and the killers were a pair of Romanian twins called Hansel and Gretel. When Eda finally called how the city was being blocked off, Revy joined her for the hunt of these hidden killers. They wound up in a hotel room with a bunch of others looking for the score, but Eda noticed that none of Balalaika's people were anywhere around. The twins weren't going to be where rumors were suggesting. They actually found the twins who tried to bribe them to let them pass for $150 Grand, but Revy wanted to kill them and take their cash. The twins escaped when Hotel Moscow soldiers rode up in a truck and started shooting. Revy didn't want to get caught up in this mess, so she left Eda and went back to the Lagoon office.
Eda had been caught by the twin Hansel looking for a way out of Roanapur, and she led the girl to the Lagoon Company to be taken away. Rock stayed and watched over the kid, but she watched him run out of the room. Revy beat up on the girl, but Hansel only said that they were alike. After they dropped Hansel off, they could only be witnesses as a man hired by Balalaika shot her in the head. It was a bad ending to a twisted situation.
Rock came to wake Revy up one day because Triad leader in Roanapur, Mr. Chang, was there to hire the Lagoon Company. Seems he stumbled upon some plans of some Islamic terrorists and was planning to sell the evidence to the US. He was having the Lagoon Company deliver the real package and sending out decoys. Their meeting as interrupted as the Protectors of the Islamic Front members attack. Revy and Chang cleared the way for Dutch, Rock, and Benny to get to the car. As they were on the run, Chang yelled out the password for their driver was "Triad are Awesome".
Rock and Revy went onshore alone after they docked in the Philippines. A man drove up to pick them up, but he failed to know that Chang had changed the password on the trip. Rock got captured in the gunfight with the suitcase, and Revy was saved from the terrorist by her real contacts. A Taiwanese blade-wielding, mercenary named Shenhua, and a drugged up Irish driver named Leigharch. They wanted to head to the rendezvous point, but she convinced them to go after Rock because he had the case they were suppose to deliver.
Revy and Shenhua raided the terrorist camp and saved Rock, but a small army was hot on their heels. As Leigharch was stoned and driving, Revy and Shenhua took turns killing off the guys after them in the cars. She tried giving Rock some of Leigharch stash but it seemed to just depress him. She thought he could handle it since he was normally so upbeat. They made it to the drop off, and Revy revealed that she had the documents hidden up her shirt the whole time. She gave them to the CIA guys, but they shocked her when they revealed they knew her real identity and how she was still wanted in New York. They flew off, and Revy scolded Rock for getting caught. She swore next time he was on his own.
A year had passed since Rock joined the team. When Balalaika hired Rock to be her translator when she went to Japan to negotiate with the Washimine yakuza, Revy was hired to go along as Rock's bodyguard, but had to leave the Cutlass behind. When they dropped by a festival that first night, they met Yukio Washimine and Ginji Matsuzaki but it nearly turned into a fight. The next day, she waited in the park and showed some local kids how to use a pellet gun while Rock went to his parents house. He came back without seeing them and they left. At the next meeting with the Yakuza, one of the annoying Washamine enforcers, Chaka, kept trying to hit on Revy. When that failed, he attacked Rock to entice her to fight. After this confrontation, she had Benny send her guns to Japan.
Turmoil hit the talks between the yakuza and Hotel Moscow. With the war coming, Revy went with Rock to see Yukio but she had been abducted by Chaka, who was making a power play to take over the syndicate. Ginji arrived and initially thought they were the attackers, but joined them to save Yukio. Revy and Ginji went into the bowling alley they were holding her, and went on a killing spree of Chaka's punk gang, She found Chaka, who tried to challenge her to a quick draw; but she just kicked him before he finished counting. She led the way while he ran after her for Ginji to finish off. He sliced off Chaka's arms with his sword then kicked him in the pool to drown.
With Yukio rescued, she took over the Washimine group and Balalaika was going after all of them. Rock tried to argue with Balalaika with her intention of meeting with the Kousa Group and she was ready to kill him. Luckily, he was able to talk his way out of getting shot, and Revy let him know just how damn lucky he was. The police showed up after Balalaika killed the Kousa leaders, and she helped Rock get away on motorcycle. She followed his directions to try and find Yukio before they left. Yukio refused to stop attacking Balalaika, and Revy and Ginji finally had their fight. Ginji destroyed one of her Cutlass and stabbed her in the leg, but she ultimately won by killing him. Revy tried to stop Rock from watching as Yukio took Ginji's sword and ran it through her own throat to prevent him from being scarred, but he didn't listen to her. After this, Rock and Revy returned home to Roanapur.
Revy was drinking with Eda at the Church of Violence when Janet Bhai, an American hacker and counterfiter, came pounding on the church's doors. She was being chased by a Mexican gangster called Mr. Elvis. It turned into a nasty one sided gunfight when Elvis was stupid enough to shoot and Eda and nearly miss Revy. That's when Revy met the church's new hire Rico and even Yolonda joined them. Eda in the end set Jane up by sending her to a hotel and calling some people on where to find her. With Rock driving the car, Revy and Eda waiting outside for Jane to come running out. This was all a plan to force Jane to pay whatever they wanted to protect her. They then made their way to the sea docks to wait for Dutch and Benny to return with the Black Lagoon.
Their wait got complicated when a team of local mercenaries after Jane attacked. They included Shenhua, Sawyer the Cleaner, Lotton the Wizard, Claude "Torch" Weaver, and many more. Eda and Revy teamed up to defeat Shanhua. Though Revy got pierced with some of her throwing knives, Eda was clear to shoot Shenhua. Revy chased after Rock, who was followed by Sawyer; but she found them on the roof and they were fine. They got aboard the Lagoon to run, but Russel and Torch jumped on. Revy fought with Torch on the deck while and sent him flying like a rocket after shooting the fuel tank on his back.
Rumors were spreading in Roanapur that the maid Roberta was seen in town. Revy and Rock were at the Yellow Flag when Fabiola Iglesias came to see her and Rock on Garcia's request. Revy set off the gunfight that took place, and allowed the young maid to accidentally destroy much of the Yellow Flag again. The Lagoon Company members later met at Garcia's hotel room. They were trying to find and stop Roberta from killing the US Black-Ops team, Grey Fox, that had murdered his father Diego Lovelace. Dutch and Revy wanted to stay out of Roberta's way, but Rock and Benny volunteered on their own. Revy went to play cards with Eda and ended up slipping the details to her, and Eda told her to back Rock up. Revy did eventually join Rock's hunt, and they learned from Boa that he was hiding that Roberta came to see him about weapons. Roberta had gone to see Praiyachat, the maker of the Sword Cutlass; explosives from Toh Chi, and had Richie Leroy hire Bren to draw out Grey Fox. They weren't going to have enough firepower, so Revy called Shenhua, who brought Lotton and Sawyer along.
They were too late to stop Roberta's rampage. Revy had Rock stay in the car and out of danger while the rest of them searched in the fray of local guns, FARC soldiers trying to kill Roberta, and that Grey Fox team. Garcia got separated from them and Shenhua got careless. Revy could only watch as she tried fighting a drug crazed Roberta, but both she and Sawyer got their weapons destroyed. They escaped death by being quiet and Revy convinced Shenhua not to keep fighting. They eventually found Garcia with two members of Grey Fox, but before they could attack Revy and Shenhua got shot from above. It was Hotel Moscow men helping Grey Fox escape, and Balalaika warned Revy to stay out of this fight. Fabiola went to Garcia, and Revy with the rest headed back to Rock to leave the battle.
Revy didn't get much time to rest as Mr. Chang hired Dutch on the request of the NSA to pick up the Grey Fox team and deliver them to the location of the next target in Laos. Garcia and Fabiola left with them, knowing Roberta was still after them. before they even left, Revy and Fabiola had a conflict on their views. She accused Revy of being the one who was angry at the world for casting her out. They picked up Grey Fox, and they all left with once they landed in Laos. Rock plan for Garcia to use blanks in his gun worked, and he was able to return with Roberta and the surviving Grey Fox members. They returned to Roanapur, and Revy was out of commission for two weeks, due to her injuries.
Janet Bhai had returned to Roanapur as part of job she was setting up. She had even hired a an undercover Chinese hacker named Feng Yifei as part of a job. Revy got a laugh out of the fact they set up Feng in a motel room of some wannabe pimps who got killed by Ronny the Jaws. The talk reminded Dutch that there was a shipment he needed delivered to the Italian mafia boss, so he gave it to Revy and Rock to pass on. It nearly got ugly when one of Ronny's idiot men drew on her, thinking she was Triad.
At the Lagoon's dock, Revy backed out of the job that Jane hired their ship for. She knew what kind of a sex freak Jane can be, and figured she was planning some kind of orgy. When Jane teased she would bring Rock along, Revy scared off Jane by telling her that while in prison she played the man's role for some sex hungry lesbians and they were never the same after her.
(The Wired Red Wild Card Arc has not been completed due to the indefinite hiatus Black Lagoon as been on since the publication of Ch. 81)
Revy's weapon of choice are a pair of custom Beretta 92FS Inox 9mm pistols dubbed the Sword Cutlass. She is ambidextrous and this allows her to duel wield her guns with remarkable skill.
The continuity of the Black Lagoon story was altered in the two seasons of the anime series, Black Lagoon and Black Lagoon: Second Barrage. The anime scene of the Rasta Blasta Arc showed Revy being knocked out by a rocket, but in the manga she was just shot, and Revy and the others were already in the bar when Roberta appeared. When the first two anime series were later re-released on Blu-ray, the omakes at the end of the Black Lagoon manga were animated as extra content. In the third series Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail tells the story of the El Baile de la Muerte Arc. This was released as a five episode OVA. The final episode showed a graphic scene of Revy's youth in New York of her being graphically beaten and sexually abused that was never shown in the manga.
Two text based novels of the Black Lagoon series were produced by Shogakukan's GAGAGA Paperbacks label. They were both authored by Gen Urobuchi, and the first was released on July 19, 2008. It's unknown what place these series hold if any in the canon story.
