Lodoss, the accursed island. Long ago, when the island was still a part of the mainland, the Gods fought for control in a cataclysmic war, and the god of war won. Lodoss was split apart from the main continent, and has since then never known peace. In it's latest war, Emperor Beld leads his army of monsters and evil humans in an attempt to overrun Lodoss. Worst still, an ancient evil god-dragon is awakening. In this classic fantasy epic, we join Parn, who's father was a disgraced knight and is out to regain his family's honor. Alongside him is the high elf Deedlit, who comes from the Forest of No Return, and becomes romantically involved with Parn, and all the people they meet and help them with there often impossible quests.

Record of Lodoss War surpassed any product of it's day. The artwork, for starters, was breathtaking, magnificent, well beyond the quality of other early third generation anime being produced when this title came out. The music, and I am no fan of the classics, was more than just appropriate. It describes the scene and the mood of the story perfectly. The story itself was deep, exciting, often touching, with plot elements such as action, romance, humor and horror. The romantic stories, and there were more than just the one between the two main characters, meshed seamlessly with the main story in a way that is rarely seen, becoming an integral part of it. There was no shortage of action in this fantasy epic, as unimaginable horrors popped up suddenly, often unexpectedly, spurring the heroes to fight for there lives. The dialog as well was richly done and highly thought out. The series steered well clear of stupidity plot elements and fan service, but it did include some gory violence, making it appropriate for teenagers or adults who don't mind seeing some blood. Overall, the series was mesmerizing, addictive, definitely the best anime I have ever seen. It's a shame I can only give it five stars, is deserves many more than that.
