Also known as redemption. This is when someone who was previously wicked decided to become good.

Betrayal is the act of treachery or a violation of a trust or allegiance. This can be to one's friends, country, or God.

Bookworms are characters who would rather have their face buried in a book than do anything else. Whether it be a spellbook or a classic novel, these characters just love books.

Is a British government agency given the task of safeguarding any rare or lost books from evil hands

Broken Promise

A broken promise is a frequent and sad theme in anime and real life.

Bullet Deflection

A ability where a characters is able to deflect incoming bullets back at the shooter.

Bullies and Bullying

A bully is a person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.

Cats

Feline animal with four legs and says "meow." Many are found hanging around animes and mangas.

Clone

A Clone is a biological copy of any organic creature. A Clone is mostly created through science and is sometimes abused to an extent.

Clothing Damage

When a character's clothes become torn from an attack, such as an explosion or energy blast.

Collateral Damage

Collateral Damage is a military term describing a situation where soldiers destroy property or kill civilians by accident or on purpose. Example:Dragon Ball Z, there is a lot of property damages and lives lost when Majin Buu blows up the whole city.

Comedy

Nearly every anime has a comedic moment here or there. Everyone likes to laugh.

Cosplay

The practice of dressing like characters from anime, manga, video games, and even novels, TV shows, celebrities, etc.

Crazy

Characters with serious long mental unstabilities. They're sometimes simply weird but recently they're portrayed as downright homicidiacs. Not to be confused with the Mentally Unstable where the character fights against it and usually wins.

Crude Humor

A style of comedy that takes a crass and politically incorrect approach to topics considered to be taboo, indecent, or impolite such as sex, violence, bodily functions, pedophilia, race, death, gender, sexual orientation and things that would generally be considered offensive if made light of.

Crying

What someone does when upset/sad. Sometimes people can also cry from sheer joy.

Damsel In Distress

A maiden is in peril and only her one true hero can save her.

Dark Past

One or more past events that negatively affected one or more people. It's very common in an anime for at least one person to have such a past.

Dogs

Canine animal with four legs that is seen as a pet.

Drama

Drama is a concept used in story telling to invoke an emotional reaction from the audience by using serious themes; such as tragedy, suspense, and death.

End of the World

The extinction of all life on Earth or the destruction of Earth itself. Also known as; Armageddon, Ragnarok, and the Apocalypse.

Enemy Love Interest

The protagonist's love interest is either a member of the enemy faction or the main antagonist of the series.

Evil

The philosophical idea of the opposition of good. Some believe it is the opposite of good while others consider it a misguided attempt of good.

Explosion

Explosions are featured in a wide array of anime/manga, created from various weapons/attacks.

Fan Service

Fan Service is often a sexually provocative moment or pose that takes place in manga and anime. It usually has no real purpose to a story, and serves as a lurid visual.

First Kiss

The act of someone giving or receiving their first kiss, or a particular couple kissing for the first time.

Flashback

Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback.

Gainax Bounce

The "Gainax Bounce" refers to breasts bouncing around gratuitously in anime, often in ways that seem to defy physics.

Good Turned Bad

Also known as corruption, this is when someone previously goodhearted becomes sinister.

Humans are typically depicted as the dominant species of the planet Earth, and sometimes of other planets. Humans often mirror their real life counterparts in terms of abilities and intellect, while other times they can achieve superhuman feats.

Light Novel

A popular form of novel, usually aimed at young adults, which features regular illustrations. Light novels also usually use shorter paragraphs and easier kanji than novels aimed at adults, as well as furigana readings for kanji, offering a fast, easy read.

Traditionally aimed at an older audience than shounen, seinen manga are typically much more realistic and mature than their shounen counterparts, but also tend to contain more explicit material.

When one character has trouble expressing themselves and is very reserved. Usually used in Anime as an endearing quality.

A human being with extraordinary powers not within the natural abilities of a normal human.

An intense battle between two or more characters using swords.

Specialized strategies and methods of exercise used in various anime and manga series to develop characters and prepare them for performing in events.
