Even ninja need to learn their dark arts, somewhere. Words gone out that a live-action movie version of the NINTAMA RINTARO is in the works from prolific director, Takashi Miike, who's also done feature film adaptations of CROWS ZERO and YATTERMAN. When I say prolific, I mean that this guy’s directed an absurd number of movies. Unfortunately, the only one I’ve seen is AUDITION, which I found a lot less scary and lot more boring that everybody told me it was going to be. Needless to say, I imagine his adaptation of this anime/manga property will run a bit lighter than that gory tale of the dangers of modern dating.

Set in Japan’s feudal era, NINTAMA RINTARO is the story of first-graders learning the deadly arts of ninjutsu at an elite academy, all the while getting into all sorts of hijinks. Somehow, I don’t expect the potential (and obvious) dangers of teaching seven-year-olds techniques to be effective assassins is ever addressed in that much detail. Anyway, child actor Seishiro Kato will star as Rantaro in this flick, getting his first leading role (and thanks to ANN for the scoop).

You know, despite what I’ve said, I think it would’ve been five kinds of cool to have ninjutsu cycle in gym glass when I was in first grade. Think about it. Gymnastics, dodgeball, softball… ninja.

I wonder how he will handle this.  I haven't seen how he pulled off Yatterman, which is supposed to be his most mainstream work, but he seems like an odd/interesting choice for this solely based off of the picture in the article.

@sickVisionz:  Dude, it was like 50 minutes of screen time before anything scary happened.

@Tom_Pinchuk: I agree that it wasn't scary the whole time.  I wouldn't call it boring though.
