A teenage martial artist falls under a curse that turns HIM into a HER every time he gets splashed with cold water. Hot water changes him back.
Ranma Saotome is a 16-year-old martial arts expert who has just returned to Japan from going on a training trip with his dad. The Tendou family, which consists of a father and three daughters, all await Ranma's arrival. The Tendo father, Soun, informs his daughters that one of them will have to marry Ranma in order to fulfill a promise made with Ranma's father Genma. The two older girls-- sweet, kind Kasumi and manipulative, greedy Nabiki --immediately volunteer the youngest sister, 16-year-old Akane.
Akane is very popular with the boys but refuses to date any man who can't defeat her in martial arts combat, and is unhappy to be volunteered to marry anyone, let alone a boy she doesn't know. Ranma arrives with a panda by his side, but to the Tendou family's surprise, he is actually a she. Akane is relieved that she won't have to marry anyone, and challenges Ranma to a friendly martial arts match. Ranma defeats her easily. Later that night, Akane walks into where Ranma is taking a bath and finds...a boy! It turns out that while training in China, Ranma fell under the curse of the Jusenkyou Springs, which cause him to become a girl when cold water is splashed on him (and to change back with hot water). His father Genma is under a similar curse, becoming a panda, which he often does intentionally in order to get out of trouble. What follows from there is a lengthy martial arts tournament series combined with a massive tangle of romantic affections, as people fall for Ranma-- both male and female form --and Akane, along with the rest of the colorful cast of characters (some under Jusenkyou curses, some not).
