See, the thing I love most about serials is that they can explore ides much more deeply than features ever allow. It’s easy to picture the Hollywood version of PSYCHO-PASS: it’d have a different title, surely, and it’d do some necessary softening of some of the rougher edges that I’ve mentioned throughout. However, I’m pretty sure the drama a few episodes back - - where the team apprehends Makishima after he incites the riot - - would’ve been the climax and conclusion of the movie. They’d have made a surface-level point about man’s inherent inhumanity, and called it a day.

Of course, now that we’re well past all of that, we’re getting into the really interesting stuff.

I feel like any respectable anime always needs a scene where a parade of secrets is revealed to the lead character which totally turn their world upside-down. Nothing you’ve been watching has been as it seems! Akane’s dialog with the Sibyl System further substantiates the necessity of including GHOST IN THE SHELL somewhere in PSYCHO-PASS’ elevator pitch and, while my mind isn’t that blown by the notion of a literal brain trust, I’m really fascinated by the more… economic reasoning that substantiates it. It’s not some overly-simple “cold logic” that our heroine’s emotions are supposed to triumph over - - there’s actually an intriguing tit-for-tat between the two as they bargain for a mutually-advantageous solution.

The show continues its rather profound deconstruction of cop movie archetypes in Akane’s rather well-realized character arc. People change, and they most often change in reaction to the people around them. What’s interesting, in this case, is that it sort-of quantifies the kind of growth that, say, Simon goes through in GURREN LAGANN when he gradually lives up to Kamina’s bold persona. The difference here, though, is that it treats that boldness almost like an actual element that’s being mixed and developed in a chemical process. Akane’s becoming as obsessed and reckless as Kogami, due to her exposure, and her transformation is being measured by degrees.

Fascinating stuff, kids!

Watch this episode, "Where Justice Lies" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

1st show i watched after getn outa the hospital an boy was it well needed. After having a few days of just network an cable crap to watch a show like this a a great reminder of why we watch entertainment. To be entertained. Not to just pass the time.Good entertainment makes time fly by .Will hollyweird learn .Odds are no

This one episode can be disected in many ways. from old cop shows ,scfi ,to good dramas of yester year.I still have to wonder how much intent here in the discection the mirroring of ficiton an reality we have now.In a way i hope it was all intentional .Dont want this show just to be lightning in the bottle .I want it to be the lighting strike that burns down the old guard entertainment trends an fads.Let it burn that have boged down creative story telling with red tape of mediocrity.

Can not wait to own this series on dvd or blue ray.

Side note i found it odd that i did not find it odd, the whole talking with a gun thing did not seem odd at the time.

It sounds like you're shutting an entire medium based on a couple shows. That's like if I said that anime sucked based on my viewings of harem and ecchi shows. I admit that Hollywood does make some bad stuff, but it is balanced by some very good movies and film. Have you seen any smaller films or the ones nominated for this year's Oscars?

However, I’m pretty sure the drama a few episodes back - - where the team apprehends Makishima after he incites the riot - - would’ve been the climax and conclusion of the movie. They’d have made a surface-level point about man’s inherent inhumanity, and called it a day.

I understand that you really like this series, but this looks like a blanket statement. There have been many films that go further than just making a surface-level point about man's inherent inhumanity.

@Acura_Max: Not nearly enough and I watch anime because these are the ones that do it much more often. Now do some of the Oscars do it sure but I really haven't seen any that do it as well as this. Feel free to point me to some you think do. Not much that hollywood makes anymore is worth my time.

@zaldar: And how often does it happen in anime? I've done the trailers for this season's anime and I'm also doing it for the next season's anime, but so far Psycho-Pass is the only one that even touches upon the theme.

@Acura_Max: Id hazard to guess in my 42 years i have probly watched far to much tv an movies. About 8 years or so ago i gave up on regualr tv .Sure theirs a odd gem here or their but i dont wade threw rerun-recycled-rebranded- retrended or flat out stolen gags .Friends point me tword something good. Just like anime vice has in anime.

I will pick up the odd movie an i watch what strikes my intrest at the time. http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/278635 was a good find .But as a genral thing hollywood seems to be stuck on stupid movie an tv.Watched the Bourne movies. An ya it was cut for tv but nothing their impressed me.Seen better stunt work on The Human Target tv series even. An better camera work.

Just for the record tho im not saying every one hates holywood.. I am saying tho i am indifrent to hollywood.Their really not worth the effort to hate.Oh an for the record some harem an/or ecchi shows can be quite good.Wish i could say the same for holywood.

@Marshal Victory: I'm getting the impression that you only watch big budgeted movies. Have you tried French cinema? They tend to explore human nature and the like.

i dont wade threw rerun-recycled-rebranded- retrended or flat out stolen gags

And anime doesn't do this?

I am saying tho i am indifrent to hollywood.Their really not worth the effort to hate.Oh an for the record some harem an/or ecchi shows can be quite good.Wish i could say the same for holywood.

Can you name me a good ecchi or harem on the level of Metropolis (not the anime one) or Citizen Kane?

@Acura_Max:

"Can you name me a good ecchi or harem on the level of Metropolis (not the anime one) or Citizen Kane?" No can do. Because i dont or wouldnt judge them as be all or end all tho i have only seen bits a peices of each. What was is not what is now. Many of the movies from 50s up are good to great but as we get closer to curent day their is less i would be intrested in.Opion is subjective an all.

That said i recomend one some think is ecchi an some think is a reverse harem Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine .Tho i would recoimend this any way.

"I'm getting the impression that you only watch big budgeted movies." Eh not sure why .Budget does not in any way make quality in ones entertainment .Same as popularity does not mean one would enjoy a film.

"Have you tried French cinema?" Im sure your not gona count Pink Panther movies .But last real french one i watched was http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/112028Its sad in many ways all the remakes of this an tv shows which could have stood on their own .

I would argue tho with anime plot structure an story "beats" are difrent not just because of culture .Its because they can or rather could more freely. Not just because the budget is smaller .Anime very much because the sci fi / fantasy outlet that was afordable to the makers.Sadly as time marchs on trends form to ruin good stories. Just as poor marketing almost killed this show as we learned last watch an learn it was almost branded with trendy things as well.

When I write "Big Budgeted movies" I'm implying a certain type of movie that targets a mainstream audience and strives to attract the lowest common denominator to get as much money as possible. Anyway, I'm not sure why I wrote that either anymore.

I would argue tho with anime plot structure an story "beats" are difrent not just because of culture .Its because they can or rather could more freely. Not just because the budget is smaller .

Could you clarify what you just wrote?

Budgets do matter, and they greatly affect quality in some instances. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion had some budget problems and it suffered greatly in terms of animation in the later part of its series.

@Acura_Max: Budget matters where the project wants to go. Not how much i or any one else enjoys said show. Many times a budget is blown where it didnt need be.Good example of that Would be http://www.screened.com/green-lantern/16-193745/ .Now dont get me wrong i love cgi from a effects to perspective of world building in the story. But from my point of view the budget does not matter on how much I ( personaly not speeking for any one else) will enjoy a feature.

What im trying to say here ( an admitily poorly) is with anime over the years their has been a bit more freedom to explore stories out side of the traditional main stream. From story pace to number of subplots ( Durarara!! good example ) manga an anime break rules we normaly see . Like a main character dien early on or characters switching roles .With PSYCHO-PASS we see sevrial things familar enuff but it feels new an difrent .It feels crafted on a story not on current story trends.

That make it better?Or should i wait till my fevers down to make another go at this? :)

@Marshal Victory: Fujiko Mine's ecchi (but in a less immature fashion), but it's not a reverse harem. Fujiko's not getting with any of those 3.

It's funny that anime gets compared to Hollywood movies, but not the indies. If you compare the deepest anime to the most shallow popcorn flicks, of course it's going to lose.

@Acura_Max: I would say more often and done better but of course some of it is worse and we get more of it now so we can see that. Still why do you feel the need to defend western movies? It isn't like they are doing poorly...

@Marshal Victory: engilsh........maybe?

Post by Marshal Victory (2,234 posts) See mini bio Level 13

@TheJoker1911: Only if i have to .. sometimes with out a fever... an poorly spelled :)

Shorter version of points i was trying to make.

1st point. Budgets size should never be proportioned to how much enjoyment you get from the film.

2nd point. Anime for years had more freedom in story telling . Its difrent thats why we like it. How it got that way better described here http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/animeResources/usHistory/part1/ than i could by far.

Post by TheJoker1911 (14 posts) See mini bio Level 9

@Marshal Victory: u make an interesting point about the budget size, but the bigger the budget the better the anime(most of the time),therefore more enjoyment.

the 2nd point of yours,i have to agree with

sorry about my engilsh...im doing like 7things at once.

Post by Marshal Victory (2,234 posts) See mini bio Level 13

@TheJoker1911: Well 1st point really was theirs a a point of overkill in money vs potential entertainment gain. a example would be Kill Me Baby! you could give them 10 times the budget an the shows not gona be more creative or even gain one more laugh. But for every example their im sure i could see a show an say gee if the animation budget was better .

Dont have to worry about english apology with me.Im the last person ever to critize some ones spelling or grammar .I have problems enuff with the written an spoken word .Hope im never arogant enuff to have the hubris to attack ones form of speech rather than discuss their point.Tho from time to time ( quite offten actualy ) my spelling an typing skills are lacking as well as the ability to form a coherant sentance :/

Post by TheJoker1911 (14 posts) See mini bio Level 9

@Marshal Victory: I have never seen or heard of "Kill Of Baby!"...so i cant really compare anything with it

Thank you for not critizing my engilsh...although its my first language,i honestly cant be bothered to write stuff properly.....its bad...i know

thank you...for "talking to u about ur opinions"?(not sure what to say)
