Just Anime » six episodes in/half way in..tone change anime trope?

well I mean

after the most moe character got shot and killed

I thought the tone changed a good bit...hmm now and then here and there did a similar thing to this...but after only one episode man that second episode was still a shocker though. And I don't like the tv tropes description of the trope..I mean I think in these it was planned from the beginning not something that did so cynically...and most of the shows I mentioned I like (and given that description of Negima..I may actually have to watch it)

Just Anime » new to anime...

@Jewel: Haibane Renmei nice slow but gets strange and moving. Only problem would be that it would set the bar so high nothing else would come close.

Just Anime » What are some good anime?

@Levance: Crazy twisted plot? That's the definition of Madoka. XD

agreed....it is a rather different lets say take on Shonen...by crazy and twisted plots I take you to mean ones that make you think what I like to call mindfuck anime. There are literally TONS of those and are my favorite type. Perfect examples: Eva, Ghost in the Shell, Paranoia Agent, Lain (a great what the fuck did I just watch show), texnolyze, and I never miss a chance to recommend Haibane Renmei probably the perfect anime. It starts off slow but when it picks up what everything means and everything that happened before takes on a very different meaning. If what you are looking for is a philisophical show that will make you think you can't go wrong, if what you are looking for is a show with great, real, characters that develop you can't go wrong, if what you are looking for is a beautifully animated show with absolutely great music you cant go wrong, with Haibane Renmei.

Just Anime » six episodes in/half way in..tone change anime trope?

So just finished up the sixth episode of Angel Beats (good show not great as HR does the same themes I think better) and it just went up a couple notches in my opinion. For those who have seen the show:

This is when angel gets locked up with our main character and things take a rather dark turn and we learn that perhaps she is not so different from our main characters after all.

It led me to wonder if shows that go one direction for a bit than take a massive turn about half way through is an anime trope. Haibane Renmei did it, Ghost in the Shell did, Lain sure as hell did (an extremely odd show became out of this world weird) and for a more modern one Steins Gate did. As Tom likes to say..what do you fellow lunatics think.

Just Anime » Favorite Songs in Anime?

Ah I saw someone else posted the opening to Haibane-Renmei. Allow me to add the ending song which always makes me cry...blue-flow

Just Anime » Haibane Renmei vs Angel Beats

Wow...well I won't argue with you as I totally disagree as it is one of the most moving shows I have ever watched and the only anime show so far to make me cry. The K-On connection was with some of the character designs and the importance of music in the first episode and in the show generally judging from the opening...and the fact frankly that the music in the opening at least was freaking incredible. (much like in HR which had some of the best anime music I have ever heard). The songs the bad have done so far couple episodes in haven't done much for me.

Just Anime » Haibane Renmei vs Angel Beats

So after two females (who I probably wouldn't have listened to if they were male....being single and all) recommended angel beats to me I started checking it out. First episode left me cold...oh look its a k-on clone. Second and third episode deepened things considerably. Interestingly I find myself wondering if there is some cross pollination between this and Haibane Renmei. I have not finished it yet but themes seem to be remarkably similar though I would call Angel Beats a little more accessible. (and Haibane Renmei so far greatly the superior show). At one point one of the characters go so far as to say "none of us killed ourselves" which COULD be seen as a rather obvious smack at Haibane Renmei...thoughts?

Cross posting this in a couple places so if you see it twice sorry...

Just Anime » Supernatural punks anime (again?)

So the ghost on supernatural was called Shojo today. A japanese ghost that you could only see if you were drunk. So as you probably know shojo is a type of anime/manga targeted to young women (who also watch supernatural due to the male leads) so I guess the idea here is you have to be drunk to like shojo? I don't know..they had to kill it with a samuri sword blessed by a shinto priest. I think they did something with anime before though I am not sure. Either way rather hilarious.

Just Anime » Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in Shell?

@sickVisionz: hmm I like to think about the meaning of it all and best way to live ect. I think that kind of thinking is important and interesting. I own books on the philosophy of science and religion actually. So my tastes are a little different. The second GTS movie I felt smarter coming out of it than I did going in. But some of my science teachers called philosophy intellectual masturbation so I understand where you are coming from. I always liked to think and talk about ideas though *shrug*

Both of these shows are certainly great and far and away better than 99% of anime both are worth watching (unlike bobobobo say or much that comes out now), but you asked which one was better so...

Just Anime » Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in Shell?

@sickVisionz: wow really? I loved both of the Ghost in the shell movies. Such great philosophy. Cowboy bebop had great style but not to much substance and the ending seemed lazy to me.

Just Anime » Why is Ghost in the Shell considered a dystopia?

I will have to try to find the screened article that mentioned it...but they called it a dystopia over their. Akira I would say comes closer to a dystopia but I don't think we know enough about the world as a whole to say (at least from the movie) I have never watched fist of the north star.

Just Anime » Why is Ghost in the Shell considered a dystopia?

I have never really considered Ghost in the Shell a dystopia. To me things like brave new world and 1984 are dystopias. In these you have extreme government control which you do not have in Ghost in the Shell. A very urban environment filled with technology does not immediately mean dystopia (or at least shouldn't) by that logic the republic of the first Jedi films are dystopias. Honestly the future shown in Ghost in the Shell (at least in Japan, not big on the American Empire) doesn't seem that bad to me. An ability to live almost forever, cool technologies for entertainment and advancement of knowledge.

Just Anime » Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in Shell?

hmm if the type of anime you like normally is dragonball and pokemon (to anime I don't like at all) I would suggest bebop. I personaly find Ghost in the Shell (movie especially) to be a much better show.

*blinks* WHERE HAS THIS SHOW BEEN ALL MY LIFE?? That description just made me INCREDIBLY interested in this show. Has this been imported to America? This has all most everything I love in Anime. Crazy scary situations that you wouldn't get away with in a non Japanese show. Magic and fantasy, and a crazy thought provoking plot that seems like it can be interpreted in multiple ways. I need to see this NOW!

so ran across some you-tube clips on uminekio recently. Like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i11jo9cQY9s

Now either this is a great horror anime.....or it is utter ridiculous and disturbing for the sake of disturbing crap....do I even want to know?

General Discussion » Pick A New Watch & Learn!

Ug yu-yu hakusho is winning sigh...not a show you can learn anything from just a DBZ clone and just as silly, pointless, and pointlessly long. Ah well...usagi drop, fam the last exile, or count of monte cristo are much better choices.
