General Discussion » Vice Pit Question Thread

Note: Minor spoilers for Eureka Seven: Pocket Full of Rainbows

How do you guys approach adaptations of anime / manga that changes the nature of the characters? Specifically, Tom has watched Eureka Seven, and I trust he's developed some degree of attachment the characters displayed. The movie adaptation Pocket Full of Rainbows (Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers) was not well received. It had plenty of issues of the usual traditional type. But what really got under the skin of a lot of people was the change the crew of the Gekko Go went through, becoming a group of callous, selfish, indignant assholes. This is a change that might not be inherently bad, but it in a way defiled part of what attracted people to the original.

General Discussion » Why are hentai pics not allowed(it's no fair)

@Daniel_Newton said:

@Turambar: Anime Vice wasn't removed from regular Google search results (as far as I'm aware), what happened was the site had enough hentai images on it that Google removed all of our images from "safe" image search results so they would only show up with safe search turned off. By default, most people searching images on Google have safe search on, so they weren't finding our images any more. Apparently, this cut visitors to the site in half, so we cut down on the hentai images and Google classed us as a safe site again.

Thanks for the clear up.

I always found the google deslisting threat a bit weird.  I mean, the site that invented the Hen-Tie shirt is still listed at the top of google if you search for their site name.

The reason is perfectly understandable though.  This isn't a pornographic site, and the majority of the viewers do not come seeking it.  Unless we're going to age gate half the images on here, hentai has no place here.

Off-Topic » Anyone playing Dungeon Fighter Online?

I've never had any problems, but I haven't played in a few months. Been playing all day today though, been a lot of fun. Almost got my Fighter(striker) to 30.

Logged on just now after half a year of inactivity.  Oh hey, my account got hacked.  All potions and avatars (2 full sets of Rare Avas and 4 full sets of Adv avas) are gone.  I guess the game decided for me whether I should go back or not.  Ironically, my main Exorcist's weapon, a +14 basis master, was intact.  I guess the hacker wasn't the biggest dick?

Off-Topic » Anyone playing Dungeon Fighter Online?

Fun game, but nexon's poor as fuck customer service pretty much makes it unplayable for me.  More specifically, their own security issues that allows passwords to get leaked out has led to many, me included to have our pinpads triggered by hacking attempts, locking the account down.  Sounds good and all until you realize the pinpad reset procedure doesn't actually work.  After waiting a few weeks without result, I was done with the game.

It warrants adding that this came just a few months after the infamous thief patch that accidentally flagged a good portion of the player base as "suspicious", leading to zero drops for the entire party when in the dungeon with such a player (this includes both drops from mobs as well as gold and items gotten from the reward cards).  After over a month of waiting, all issues were mysteriously resolved without any official word recognizing the problem.  So yeah, fuck Nexon.

Just Anime » Summer 2012 Anime chart, what are your early picks?

The two Code Geass OVAs sound worth a laugh while Moyashimon sounds legitimately interesting.  The rest, not so much.

As for Gundam Unicorn 05, already saw it and quick review: it's pretty good.

@Turambar: true... but still there are alot of spite battles in their... if it's popularity than is good....

Have you ever had the opportunity to play the role of king maker in a game?  Someone who won't win, but held the key to other players being in first place?  You can court favors from everyone, and be as spiteful as you wish because you have no more stake.  That kind of power is pretty great.

And that's like 15 too many.

Well it not there fault for being popular

There's a reason why I said their presence on that bracket is expected.

Also, while the Shounen-filled roster is both expected and depressing for a mainstream poll, seeing Captain Harlock make it for more than one round is a pleasant surprsing

It not full of Shounen titles

I'd say any Shounen title with enough pull in the west on a general level to be in there is in there.

That was horrible... is Voltron the only character they know?? he is like in every match.

It's a bracket, and it's won in every single round.  I'm not seeing a problem.  Also, popularity contests is pretty much want any of these types of competitions comes down to being.  I in fact prefer the more transparent nature of a contest such as this compared to battle threads we'd find on this site.

Off-Topic » is it me or anime is losing popularity?

The internet has allowed for the acquisition of anime through mediums other than network television to become far easier, and the decrease of anime on TV has more to do with the rise of torrents and streams more so than a decrease in popularity.  The same can be said of anime products as it is now far easier to purchase such things online than at a brick and mortar store.  It is worth noting also that while Cartoon Network and Adult Swim by extension is still going strong, the place where a lot of anime was aired: Saturday morning and weekday afternoon cartoon blocks on network TV, no longer exist either.  There isn't just a decrease of anime on network TV, but cartoons in general.

That said, anime internally has seen a decrease within the last few years.  One simply has to take a look at the number of shows being produced over the course of the last one or two years worth of seasons with the late 2000s to notice a big numerical difference.

SDF Macross and Mashin Hero Wataru.  Love went into hibernation for a while and was then reignited by Escaflowne.

General Discussion » Should I watch Fate/Zero or Fate/Stay Night first?

You will not have any issues following the story of Fate Zero without reading Fate Stay Night.  The hour long first episode spends a long time (perhaps too long) setting up the premise.  What you will be missing out on is some of the call backs and fan service moments of the original story.  More than anything else though, Fate Zero is simply a better produced show.

Just Anime » Gundam Wing vs SEED. Which is better?

Wing I guess just in terms over overall historical importance to the franchise along with the lack of backpack syndrome that characterized much of SEED's mecha designs.  That said, both shows are pretty bad.

Maybe they could use this to grow into a more all encompassing Japanese pop culture site. They do the occasional movie review, but there's a world of Japanese TV shows out there, not to mention the huge idol trend.

You mean like Japanator? I don't know. I'd be further worried about the format of the website. Hell, I am right now. I think things will change around here but I'm not sure in ways that will be comfortable. Outside of Giant Bomb, I visit AV and Screened the most. Now that Whiskey has been divvied up, I have concerns about the fate of two of my favorite websites.

I don't mean to be flippant or alarmist, but can anyone recommend a few other good anime websites with civil forums?

I'd say simply tralling the internet for anime blogs, and adding ones you like to your blog roll.  Blogs and their discussion sections will always be far more satisfying than forums when it comes to actually discussing the medium.

@PenguinDust: AnimeSuki is decent, though most series are restricted to a single topic.  Asked Dave about the site but didn't get a reply.
That's because Dave is on the other side of the split.  He no longer has anything to do with Screened, Tested, or Anime Vice.
