takashichea (Level 25)

I think I take about an hour to do episode summaries. Finished Chaika Ep. 12 along with wiki moderation. Now to do One Piece and Fairy Tail summaries. Though, I think I arrived too late. Looking at my Follow Feed. PM me if you need me.

This would be a short blog because I realized I'm running out of time to do my weekly episode summaries. I was preoccupied with community projects and school this summer.

Welcome to the marathon blogs (commonly known as winter/summer/spring experiences)! It's a small project where I take on recommendations from folks in the Anime Vice community, using this list. Usually, I conclude my marathons with the blog after I finish my marathon. Now, I'm doing an introductory blog.

I always made the effort to watch and read anime and manga legally. I broke the rule once for Knights of Sidonia because Netflix was the only one that streamed the series, but it was a month later, July 4 or 3, 2014. I couldn't wait. I wanted either HULU or Crunchyroll to stream the series. While HULU and Crunchyroll has a huge anime library, Netflix's anime library is lackluster. I did tried the one month trial. There wasn't enough titles to keep me attached to Netflix.

These are the shows I'm currently doing a marathon.

I watching Inuyasha without any recommendations from Vicers. I did it because I wanted to finish the series. I didn't have a chance back in middle school. I believe it was either Inuyasha or Dragon Ball Z that got me into anime. I had a long break from anime due to not having cable until college. It's a trip down memory lane for me. I wasn't much of an anime fan in the past compared to my current self.

Sailor Moon was recommended by . I was curious on why people loved the series. BigHeart711 was the one who got me into the Magical Girl genre, starting with Puella Magi Madoka Magica, in the summer of 2012. That was my first magical girl show. I'm seeing the deconstruct of the magical girl genre and now, the start of the magical girl genre, Sailor Moon.

This TV show I haven't watched yet. After seeing the Flash trailer in the Movies & TV Club that was started by , I'm interested in watching Arrow. I haven't seen a lived adapted TV series for a DC character before. I was always a fan of the DC animated films and TV shows.

Note: This blog will be expanded fully when I have time off from school. I wanted to thank everyone for their support over the years. I wouldn't have done it without them.

Today, June 20, 2014, I have finally reach 1 million wiki points. I barely noticed it while working on one of the Chaika - The Coffin Princess episode wiki pages. I was watching the activity feed like always during forum moderation. When I got into Anime Vice during October of 2010, it was my little sister who had found this site. When we were watching Fairy Tail together, I was searching the web for some fun images of Fairy Tail. My little sis found some pics from this strange website. I didn't pay much attention until I saw the Fairy Tail wiki pages that were done by Obsidian609 and Obscurefan. I started joining the community out of the curiosity for the wiki.

First Time

You remember your first time wiki editing. My first edit was to Nova's page, but Foxx rejected it because I only edited the deck summary and didn't leave a note of what I did. Years later, I found out the true problem when I became wiki mod, is that the deck summaries in the wiki page are invisible during moderation. You have to compare the wiki page in a different tab during the wiki queue. I did explain to Foxx, and he approved my submission later on. The wiki queue and lots of parts of the site needs a lot of revamping. It's a constant reminder when we work in this community.

First Wiki Team

My first team was Fairy Tail, and I was proud to be a Fairy Tail wiki editor part of the biggest wiki editing teams in the history of Anime Vice. Ethan Lance started the big Wiki Task Theme: Fairy Tail while Foxx created wiki tasks later on. Annabanana, Wales, Buhssuht, and I were clearing wiki tasks within a day. It was a hectic but competitive atmosphere. I felt so connected to the community. After the gold rush, it was just Annabanana, Daniel Newton, and myself taking care of the Fairy Tail wiki pages.

I wrote the Fairy Tail Recognition Blogs for Animevice users to commemorate our work.

First Solo Wiki Project

I was glad to be part of many teams in Anime Vice, working together in the wiki pages. I had my share of solo projects where I took on everything. Shaman King was my biggest solo wiki project. I wrote mostly volume and episode summaries on top of doing a few character pages. With the help of past editors who done some of the pages, I finished the rest of manga volumes in Oct 2011 (Shaman King Manga Wiki Project is Finished). It was the most intense wiki project I had done by myself. I think I finished 43 episodes for the anime series. I never did went back to finish the anime portion.

Thanks

I have a huge list of people to thank. It would take more than 5 pages or so. If you remember from my My First Anime Vice Anniversary blog, I had a huge list which I put out on this blog.

2011's Thanks

Staff

  • ZombiePie - He is a big help to me in Giant Bomb. His sarcasm and witty comments made my day when I'm stressed out. He helps to give input about the things I have done such as the spam blog rules.

I really put a lot of pride in working with people. We wiki editors are the forerunners of the site. We create wiki pages, so people can use them for news, blogs, reviews, etc. We're the arrow because we hit glitches first in the community because we deal with glitches every day.

I will thank the following people who made a huge difference in my years of working in Anime Vice. Don't worry if I didn't include you. I love everyone in the community. I know so much folks not just wiki editing but across different communities in Anime Vice.

Annabanana
Annabanana
Annabanana was my first partner in Anime Vice's wiki community and one of my best friends. We work on Fairy Tail wiki project for a long time. I still work on the project to keep the story of our work along with our teammates alive. It was Fairy Tail that revolutionized the wiki editing we know. Anna was one of the best wiki editors I know in the community. I can't thank her enough. She got me into many different anime series when we were wiki editing. She made wiki editing fun.
Acura Max
Acura Max
Acura Max was a wiki mod from Screened, and he's from Pennsylvania. He and I were wiki editors on Screened, Anime Vice, and To Hollywood and Beyond Wikia. Acura is a dedicated guy who knows both of our communities intimately. He and I worked on episode summaries for Star Trek, Korra, Valvrave, Robotics;Notes, and Walking Dead. He and BigHeart711 always helped out the anime seasonal guides. I would help Acura with the Screened TV trailer guide, too. He was the one who got me into the mech genre of anime and also into Star Trek and Walking Dead TV shows. I was a TV noob. I didn't watch a lot of TV shows. Acura wouldn't stop recommend TV shows to me. I always appreciate Acura for being there when things got tough.

Acura Max reached 100,000 wiki points on October 11, 2013 back in Screened. I was proud of him.
FinalDasaHe was the manager of Screened. I admired his tenacity in promoting Screened. In the face of not having funding or help from Bermanbraun (now known as Whalerock Industries), he kept working with his group. People respected and admired FinalDasa for never giving up. He would write an article a day except holidays. That man deserves vacation and time off for what he has done. He always supported and loved his community even other Whiskey Media communities. I was glad to help Acura and him with the Screened wiki projects and Top Movies and TV Shows of 2013.
KuronekoXIII
KuronekoXIII
One of my close friends from Canada. He and I first met in the Sket Dance weekly reviews. He loved the reviews and joined our Sket Dance wiki team. Later, he and I worked on Guilty Crown and finished the episode summaries together.
Tom Pinchuk
Tom Pinchuk
Tom Pinchuk is the current manager of Anime Vice, creator of Hybrid Bastards, and screenwriter of Max Steel. Without him, we wouldn't have Anime Vice. I thank him for believing in our users. When I met him back in Los Angeles (AX 2013), it was surreal meeting someone you only know of in the internet. Being thank by Tom personally made my day. Looking at Foxx, Daniel, and other users, I didn't believe I made much difference in my online community in comparison. I was just a normal wiki editor. I told him it was folks who worked with me, particularly Daniel. I spoke so much about Daniel Newton instead of myself with Tom. Tom told me not to put myself down. He told me that Daniel thought highly of me. If it wasn't for us two encouraging others to start up community projects, Anime Vice wouldn't have much user content. Like Ethan Lance, Tom told me to keep thinking of ideas and told me to stay in touch if I get any ideas.

I promise him I'll keep working hard for Anime Vice. Months later, I started off the Cultural interviews project that made a huge difference by showing Anime Vice is one of the best international online anime community. Its history is forever etched in the An Entire World of Anime Fans! -- THE VICE PIT video. It was such an honor. I thank Tom for giving me this opportunity.
Daniel Newton
Daniel Newton
He's one of my best friends who is one of the biggest and influential person in this community. He's a writer at Bago Games. Not only he came up with dozens of non wiki community projects and games, he revolutionized the wiki community. His roots were in Fairy Tail where he bump into me and Anna. Took us under his wing and promoted our work. Suggested things to improve the wiki for Fairy Tail which was passed out to different wiki projects. Fairy Tail was his wiki experiment. We were carrying out experiments in coding, something new that a lot of wiki editors haven't much experience with.

He and Foxx would clash in their views over the wiki a lot, but that shows how much respect I seen between him and Foxx. Daniel will always take the initiative and do something crazy and innovated just to help the community.

I admired Daniel a lot for thinking outside of the box. I would ask him, Foxx, and sickVisionz wiki questions when I was a young user and then, a wiki mod. He did warned me not to go into the battle forums, knowing the type of person I am. Leave it to Sonata. I couldn't abandon Sonata even it did hurt me emotionally.
Foxx is one of the best wiki editors, currently number one in our community. He had helped out me and my team countless times. He's a passionate artist who fought for Anime Vice's recognition in front of the Whiskey Media sites, Comic Vine and Giant Bomb in particular. I wasn't brave as Foxx. I was too passive compared to him. I let people step over me while Foxx wouldn't let anyone get to him. He isn't afraid to speak his mind. Foxx made a lot of impact on our community especially the wiki. He made us feel proud of our work in the community spotlight. I admit we're not close. He's like an older, tsundere brother to me. Well, I know that sounds funny. He does that to me a lot. I know it.
Ethan Lance
Ethan Lance
Ethan Lance was the engineer who help created Anime Vice. Not many young users today after the Whiskey Media sale out knew his legacy and his contributions. While Tom Pinchuk wasn't wiki oriented, Ethan was pro community and was aggressive in the wiki aspects of the community. He personally thank me for being Gung Ho and making wiki teams when he saw our Fairy Tail team.

It's a shame we lose Ethan Lance back in 2012. Having a strong staff presence makes people especially my teammates feel safe and acknowledged in their work. He and Tom always stress to me to promote user content, be community driven. I had carried their words while following in their footsteps.
PikaHyper
PikaHyper
PikaHyper is a wiki mod from Comic Vine. He's the best wiki elite because in 2012, he got up to 200,000 wiki points in Anime Vice under 2 months just by adding manga volumes. He stops because he was needed to lead Comic Vine's wiki editing frontier. I would visit Comic Vine to help promote manga releases and add Japanese manga releases from Anime Vice's incoming seasonal trailer guides. I would ask him for advice concerning the wiki for both Comic Vine and Anime Vice.

He's true friend. He would welcome Anime Vice's wiki editors should AV suffers the same fate as Screened.
Wales
Wales
Wales was a cool guy from Georgia. He was an active wiki editor who talked to me about college a lot. We were close friends. He would help me and Anna on the Fairy Tail wiki pages. I help him on the Legend of Korra pages. I took over with Acura Max's help on Screened and then Anime Vice. Wales was very influential on me. He didn't want me to work in Anime Vice too much. He warned me that the site wouldn't last forever and to take it easy with the wiki. He knows I'm really attached to this site and its wiki pages. He was right. Years later, we had Whiskey Media sale out. He knew Whiskey Media had some fall outs when he noticed AV wasn't getting enough attention from staff compared to other sites. He was talking about financial reports on the company and pointed out to telltale signs.
Taichokage
Taichokage
Taichokage is a veteran user over at the battle forums and one of the top Toriko and Magi wiki editors. His work on the character pages is amazing. I first met him in December 2013 when I was writing a quick Best Battle User of the Month. Turns out I didn't know the guy. Everyone in the battle forums know the guy and respected him a lot. I didn't have enough time to interview Taichokage like I did for future Best Battle User of the Month threads. I just combed through his profile.

He always supportive of the community. He's well rounded and dedicated. After reaching 10,000 forum posts, he's working on his goal to reach 100,000 wiki points.
ZombiePieI used to wiki edit in Giant Bomb. ZombiePie always spotlighted the Fire Emblem pages from the Fire Emblem wiki team. He would visit Anime Vice and put up playful banters with the community members. He loves all of the Whiskey Media sites. Like PikaHyper, I would visit Giant Bomb to comment on the community spotlight and chat with ZB a bit. I would ask ZombiePie about stuff in Anime Vice and Giant in regards to wiki.

Welcome to another week of DVD and Blu-Ray releases! It's a small selection for the summer season. I haven't tried Busou Shinki, Shiki, and Red Data Girl. I know my teammate Acura Max watched that show. Chances are we have similar tastes, so I might like the show. It's been a while since I watch Pokemon. I'm on X and Y, watching random episodes with children at Church. I missed the first episode where Ash meets S

I would love to hear your recommendations on these series. All comments are welcome. Thank you.

Disclaimer: I'm just promoting the official release and the publishers. I'm not selling you anything. This is to combat piracy and get fans to support the official release. All summaries are from ANN.

Vinland Saga 101 Chapters in One Day Binge (Summer 2013 Experiences)

Last night while I was studying for exam this week, I was looking at the weekly manga releases for this week. I work on a project to promote manga releases in the US. (see my last week one, Weekly Manga Releases: June 10, 2014). I notice Right Stuf was having a Kodansha special sale. It was going to end at 11:59 CT. I was going through what Kodansha titles I wanted to buy besides Attack on Titan. I saw Vinland Saga, and I was curious because I remember Ben Applegate, an editor I listened to during the Kodansha Q & A Panel at Anime Expo 2013, was recommending this manga series along with Sankarea and Sherlock Bones. I told myself I'm going to preview one chapter to see if I like it or not. Then, buy the manga volume.

5 hours later

Okay, I just read 50 chapters or so illegally. (I'm a hypocrite, but I do buy manga volumes to support the industry). I ended up buying Missions of Love for little sister and Attack on Titan: Before the Fall Vol. 1-2 and Attack on Titan: No Regrets Vol. 1-2. I didn't get to buy Vinland Saga in time. I will buy key volumes of Vinland Saga that have explored a character and show their death in the future when Right Stuf holds another Kodansha special sale.

3:43 AM - June 17, 2014

Damn, I just read over 100 chapters.

In conclusion, I never read something so addicting in a long time since One Piece (see Summer 2012 Experience: Trying Some New Anime and Manga). I read One Piece at my public library. They had around 25 volumes, so I did spent one whole day at the library reading from volume 1 to volume 12 or so. I ended up checking out later volumes to read at home. For Vinland Saga, I wanted to see what happened next. I couldn't stop at the end of story arcs where the Viking invasion stopped. What happened to our hero after his quest of vengeance has ended?

Without Spoilers, here's my recommendation:

As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band's leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father. Sustaining Throfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery...the land Leif called Vinland.

Kodansha.com

Vinland Saga is based on the history of the Vikings that invaded England from the perspective of our main hero, Thorfinn. It's a tale that emphasizes three core themes:

  • Revenge
  • War
  • Slavery

If you love reading about warriors and their tale of hardships during war and peace time, it's a manga series for you. The violence in this manga series is on par with Attack on Titan. It's jarring for me because you see humans killing humans brutally compared to Titans killing humans brutally. Lots of decapitation and female nudity. While it doesn't show rape explicitly, it does have scenes of implied rape. In war, the Vikings and other countries plunder villages, kill the men, and rape the women. Then, they sell some of the women and men into slavery. I would not recommend this manga to teenagers and younger unless you have a thick skin.

Related Manga Series to Recommend

  • Magi - The Labyrinth of Magic - Like Vinland Saga, this series has dark elements exploring war, slavery, and racism. Unlike Vinland Saga, Magi is more light hearted because there is no rape or really gorey violence. There was a decapitation scene once, but it was more watered down.
Magi has fan service which Vinland Saga does not have. Expect lot of chibi and boobs in Magi.
  • One Piece - The series has emphasized slavery in two major story arcs late in the series: Sabaody Archipelago and Mermaid Island story arcs. Unlike Vinland Saga, One Piece is more about the adventure rather than war.
Magi - Labyrinth of Magic
Magi - Labyrinth of Magic
Story revolves around Aladdin who finds a magic flute that houses a djinn name Ugo, a magical being that is similar to genie. The two travel together around the world to discover more djinns. Along the journey, Aladdin encounters and make friends as well as enemies, while discovering true purpose of his life.
