Welcome everyone! Every season, I try my best to promote discussion threads. There are some threads of shows I watch, but it doesn't get much attention. It's all right because we have a small community. So I do little reviews just to promote it. Here's the discussion thread: Yona of the Dawn Discussion.

Plot

Episode 1 pretty much does what most site's synopsis had said. It's light spoiler, but you see everything sets up in just the first episode. I briefly summarize.

Yona is a princess of a kingdom called Kouka who lives with her father, King Il, and her bodyguard, Son Hak. With the arrival of Son-Won and guests for Yona's birthday, Yona tries to muster courage to confess to Son-Won. Though, her father forbids her from marrying Soo-Won without any reason given. Afterwards, Yona finds her father slain by Soo-Won who usurps the throne. Having lost her status, Yona suffers a breakdown while Son Hak does his best to protect her life.

The story of the series follows Yona and her group of all men in how they deal with Soo-Won. Watch it legally at Cruncyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/yona-of-the-dawn

Why Should You Watch it?

This is an interesting anime series. I first thought it was a reverse harem. I just look at the cover and saw one girl with a lot of guys. I was surprised it wasn't. It was an adventure genre with a female protagonist. We haven't had a lot of female protagonist driven series that doesn't feature a lot of fan service or sexualizes the characters. I still remember Kill la Kill, and it was a bit controversial for its type after many argue it paved the way for strong women.

Besides the gender, the anime has a cool setting and names. I haven't seen Korean names (I think it's Korean) being used in anime. Plus, I believe this show is a Shoujo adaptation. It's rare to see new Shojo shows these days. My last Shoujo shows was World is Still Beautiful and Wolf Girl & Black Prince. You see harem, comedy, and slice of life shows every season. It's nice to see a different show for a refreshing change.

Flaws So Far

Without spoiling new viewers, it has been heavy with flashbacks. Flashbacks are great for building characters and making the audience attach to the characters. When you dedicate whole episodes to flashback, you are doing more TELL and not SHOW. The Show Not Tell element is to weed out unnecessary scenes and get to the point when storytelling gets slow. (feel free to correct me. I'm not much a literary major). With episode 1 and 2, I already saw their relationships. You don't need to keep hammering it in episode 3.

In Summary

If you want something new, Yona of the Dawn is an action, adventure, and fantasy type of Shojo series with heavy romance elements. Animation is beautiful. Blood is shown, but it's not a gorey show. It's a serious show that doesn't rely on fan service. There are instances of chibi and Manga Iconography used to break tensions.

Thank you everyone. I hope you try it if your preferences match up. I hope to see folks in the Yona of the Dawn Discussion or in the episode reviews. I have to write up the episode 1-6 review in order to catch up.

Welcome everyone, it's a small selection this week.

Familiar series

  • My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy (Noucome for short) - It's a comedic harem series with mild fan service. It revolves around Kanade who has a curse, a curse that forces him to pick random 3 choices. Otherwise, he gets an insufferable migraine. It's one of those series I believe that works better without the harem aspect.
  • Gurren Lagann - For folks love mechs, fan service with lots of Gainax Bounce, over the top fight scenes, and drama. I seen it back in spring 2013 prior to Kill la Kill which aired in fall 2013. Loved both series.
  • Sailor Moon - I would recommend to any audience. It doesn't matter what gender. Guys can enjoy Sailor Moon. It may seem girly, but it has some stuff that wouldn't appeal to children. I haven't finish the series. It's a good start for fans who hasn't dive into the magical girl genre. You can also check out Madoka which deconstructs the magical girl genre after you watch most of Sailor Moon.

Unfamiliar series

I'm interested in two shows:

  • Patema Inverted - I'm in the mood for sci-fi lately due to Psycho Pass 2 and recent experiences with shows that made touch the surface of the Sci-Fi genre in anime.
  • Time of Eve - After reading the synopsis, Chobits came to my mind first. I haven't finished Chobits. I'm interested in the sociological and psychological aspect of humans and androids.

I would love to hear your recommendations on these series. All comments are welcome. Thank you.

Disclaimer: I'm just promoting the official release and the publishers. I'm not selling you anything. This is to combat piracy and get fans to support the official release. All summaries are from ANN.

Last Saturday was the premiere of Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction on Cartoon Network. I was at home, babysitting my neighbor's child who wanted me to watch the movie with her. This blog is just a diversion for me to take a break from school, wiki projects, and other forum moderation.

Summary

Ash and his crew run into Diancie who is being pursued by thieves. Once Ash and his crew save Diancie, they become Diancie's body guards on her royal adventure to seek out Xerneas. Diancie is on a quest to receive Xerneas powers in order for her to make the heart diamond which save her kingdom.

Can Ash and his gang get Diancie to save her kingdom?

Verdict

It has been a long time since I watched a Pokemon film. I stopped at Heroes.

Beware of Spoilers!

Good

  • It's a good film for children. It had that Ghibli vibe. I get into that when we get to the bad section. Teaches kids to respect mother nature and to be altruistic. Ash and his gang just help Diance out of their good heart without truly knowing her.
  • Mega Evolution and Pokemon Fun: Besides Diance cheating and making her mega stone, I thought it was cool seeing her Mega Evolve. It was nice to see the final evolutions of the Kalos starters along with trainers who cosplay. You got a fire mage and a water shinobi. It's a bit strange Serena, Ash, and Clemont didn't have any new Pokemon. Their group is a bit smaller than Ash's past groups.

Bad

  • Lack of a Climax: My main problem with Ponyo and Totoro was that their climax was not much of hi stake conflict. It resolves too easily and peaceful. That's why I had a Ghibli vibe from this film. The action for the final fight against Yveltal was lack luster. Xerneas just showed up, and Yveltal left without any resistance. That was it.

Bizarre

  • Continuity Errors: Didn't Ash and his crew see Xerneas in the series during the Pokemon camp arc? They shouldn't be surprised at Xerneas like they saw it for the first time.
  • Diancie isn't provoking the crowd to look at her as a legendary Pokemon. No one is at awe with her, taking pictures of her, or gather around her. She walks in a busy mall. People regarded as a regular Pokemon. I felt that was odd because Mew, Celebi, and others were so secretive and elusive, avoiding human contact.

All in all, it was a good film for young Pokemon fans. For the older audience, it's doesn't match up to the older films in terms of action and story. The music in the film is forgettable.

Thanks everyone! I hope you enjoy the film.

This week's manga releases is huge. I'm going to be late with this one and finished in 2 or 3 sitting when I get back from a meeting tonight at 7 PM.

Familiar Manga Series I'm looking forward to:

  • Blue Exorcist - For folks who love supernatural shonen with demons and exorcists.
  • Alice in the Country of Clover - For folks who love Alice in the Country of Hearts. You can't read this until you read the main series.
  • Attack on Titan - For folks who love action and horror shonen series, it's the struggle for humanity's survival against Titans who prey on humans
  • D. Gray-Man - It's like Blue Exorcist but more dark and brutal in the blood bath. Instead of demons, you fight Akuma and Noah.

I would love to hear your recommendations on the rest of the manga series featured this week. All comments are welcome. Thank you.
