Best Anime of 2009
Not in order.
1. Clannad After Story

CLANNAD was great because of it's mixture of comedy, harem-esque romance, and well, moe. But it also had a great underlying storyline. After Story however, is just about the story, and in fact is a serious drama almost all the way through. Yet, it manages to surpass its predecessor by bring emotional resonance and character development to a whole different level. No other anime in 2009 touched the heart as much as CLANNAD After Story, and no other anime had so many heart-wrenching, emotional, tear-jerker, character-defining moments. An easy choice for best anime of 2009.

2. Bakemonogatari

Bakemonogatari can be described as either nothing short of brilliance or an incoherent mess. There really isn't much middle ground. I loved it because of the way that SHAFT made this mainly dialogue heavy show interesting despite the fact that most of the time you were just listening to the characters talk (and talk ALOT). Senjougahara may also be one of the best female characters of all time. And despite all the craziness that is often on screen and the sometimes esoteric dialogue, there's some sort of transcendental appeal here which is beyond my ability to explain in words.

3. Summer Wars

Summer is simply fantastic. One of the best anime films in years, Summer Wars surpasses Hosada's previous work (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) but sets a new standard for animated films for years to come. The simple story telling, a rich cast of likable characters, a relevant premise, and plenty of social commentary combines for an enjoyable and at times thought-provoking experience. Better than Up in my opinion.

4. Eden of The East
5. Mobile Suit Gundam 00

(Note this is referring to Gundam 00 S2). The second season of Gundam 00 is far superior to the first. Gone are the emo Gundam Meisters and gone are the horribly uninspired fight scenes and questionable animation. Instead we get arguably some of the best animated, best choreographed fight scenes around and also more mature characters that no longer spout emo lines of hatred or blind idealism prevalent in the first season. Probably one of the most improved series of 2009 and a worthy addition to the top ten. Oh and it's a Gundam series so yeah, you'll probably either love it or hate it.

6. Tears to Tiara

Who would have ever thought that an anime based off of a bishoujo game (and a harem anime at that) would turn out to be so good? Tears to Tiara is one of the most consistent, well written, and well-planned out anime in recent memory. It does drag like other series, and it does tell its story at mach-speed either. Nothing about the show stood out the same way that some other shows did, but it's overall execution was superb and the results, while not super exciting, speak for themselves. Also, how can you not like a harem anime that also features large does of bromance?

7. Toradora

Toradora! is more than meets the eye. It's not just your typical slice-of-life high school romantic comedy. Sure, it has all the trappings of your typical teenage comedy with plenty of love triangles and awkward situations. But aside from the laughter, there is a solid emotional foundation. The characters are well-developed, they have chemistry, they care about each other, and as a result we care about them as well.

8. K-On!

By now KyoAni has masterd moe. It's mastered moe to such a level that even a show like K-ON!, which is really not much more than moe overload, can turn out to be so entertaining, and so popular. Everything from the opening and closing credits, to the musical performances, to the most innocuous of dinner table scenes, everything in K-ON! is embued with moe, uh, moeness. What can I really say about this? Like I said, it's moe overload. So forget about a decent plot or deep character development, all you need to do is watch Mio blush. You'll be hooked right away.

9. Nyan Koi!

Nyan Koi is a comedy series with a supernatural twist. It happens to contain love triangles, a guy who is cursed to communicate with cats, and well, a nice dose of fan service. You could just write it off as another screwball comedy but it's undeniably hilarious, and at the end of the day, what more do you really want from your comedies? A plot, character development? C'mon, if it makes you laugh (and Nyan Koi! will make you laugh), nothing else matters.

10. Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini

Huh...I fount DtB: Ryuusei no Gemini largely a disappointment, but the rest of the shows on your lists which I've seen have indeed been pretty good...I feel like I need to watch Bakemonogatari soon.
