Team Sket Dan
Team Sket Dan

After so much emotional drama, we are taken back to Sket-dan's comedic endeavors with a new request from Yamanobe. Their Genesis-crazed teacher informs the group that he has been invited to represent Japan in the Genesis World Grand Prix. Of course, to compete he needs a team of four players and Sket-dan agree fill three of those slots. Who do they know that is good at sports and eats international foods? Captain agrees to complete the team and they are off to the tournament that is held in the kingdom of N'preenu Ch'p'p's'b.

Look! A Stand-Alone Image!
Look! A Stand-Alone Image!

This was definitively intended to be a sports anime parody, but the lazy tricks in animation disappointed me. Most of the characters introduced made no impact and each competition was mostly shown in stand-alone images with narrative. It seems like it was intended to be Chiaki's spotlight throughout but we got to see little to nothing of the tournament. Worst part was how even Hime acknowledged the laziness of the animators. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't an episode I would categorize as "hate", but I did not like it either way. The Wyoming state competitors' cliches and Captain's appetite did merit some laughter. Plus, I'll never complain about Switch's narration.

Just as a side note: Anime Vice has no concept page for Genesis. Could someone make it so that I can fully understand the rules of the game!? Afterwards, lets get together and play a round.

Verdict

I don't know if it's the fact that before this episode we had experience such a serious toned story, or I simply wasn't in the mood that day, but this episode probably falls as one of the worst episodes Sket Dance has had. I mentioned in on my Winter Watch: Waiting in the Summer #10 article: The day I watched this episode was the same day I watched the latest Sket Dance and Recorder and Randsellepisodes. Out of the three Recorder and Randsell's was the best. If you've been following my articles for R&R, then you know what this means... The sports anime parody was a funny concept, but the execution disappointed me. I'm not saying we need to be brooding and sad all the time, but can we get some funny, sibling resolution between Sasuke and Bossun?
