I... I'm in shock.

I just watched the third episode of the second season. Up until this point, all of the episodes of both seasons have been beyond episodic. Sometimes, you would get three or four seperate, individual stories within a single episode.
Then this episode came along.

It started out as usual, Ric was cleaning out his home after Nino had used it to dry fish in it, when he found a tape player.
While the episode had the usual humour, it had something that I thought I would never get from this series.

Character Development.

Actual, honest-to-truth, character development. At an Evangelion level.

And I really want to know what is inside those tapes.

Anime of the season. I'm calling it right here.

Bakuman and World God Only Knows shortly follow it.

Not much action, but pretty heartwarming. Also, Madara's new mask kicks ass.
| |
Well that sucked. Worst one in a while actually.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.
Everything this guy does is awesome. Takashi Komuro is awesome incarnate

I loved this episode, and it was a brilliant ending to a great series. Even better, they avoided the filler ending and had a sequel hook, just as I wanted.
Hirano, you are indeed the baddest motherfucker there, right up there with Saeko, Takashi, and Soichirou and Yuriko Takagi.
"Yuriko... you are a fine woman."

Those were easily the best last words you can say to your wife before charging into a horde of zombies to save your daughter ever.

See, this is why I love this show. Not for the upskirts. Not for the gore. Not for the zombies, but this is people surviving at the end, being people and badasses in order to keep going another day.

 A fine woman indeed

They did that for their daughter. Realistic people who put their feelings aside on a regular basis, but that final act of selfishness cements them as loving parents.

On the other end of the spectrum, you get purple shirt, who abandoned all her preaching of peace when it was her neck on the line. Again, human. Flawed, cowardly, but human.

And that's what they are. Human.
I could gush about how humans are the most resilient bastard since the rat. I could talk about how we're stupid enough to launch nukes at each other when we need each other most. I could even talk about how, if we're faced with an impossible situation and an unstoppable enemy, we will make the enemy pay for each inch they take with litres of blood, because we are spiteful and efficient killing machines, the masters of war, the rulers of a world of death.

But I won't. I'll save that for another time. Instead, enjoy my listing of my favourite characters in the show from top to bottom. I hope you enjoyed Highschool of the Dead as much as I did, and enjoyed reading my thoughts as much as I enjoyed writing them.
Just so everyone knows, this episode ends chapter 15 of the manga, though the anime also covered a later story with Takashi's and Saeko's episode, and the manga is 27 chapters long at this point, so you can expect a season 2 next summer I reckon.
What can you expect?

That's as far as I know at least. Looking forward to season II and a decent dubbed version!
