The series strength lies, indeed, in the fact that it ran this long while at the same time it was always understood that it wouldn't run past 50 or so episodes. There is a definite arc and narrative that unfolds within that generous constraint which allows for a lot of interesting set-ups, callbacks, and general intertwining of character arcs. I'm glad you decided to stick with this one.

I find that E7 is not a good anime to put down and come back to after a while.Anyway, yeah, the strength of the show lies with its insistence on taking time to really set the stage. From here on out things will go increasingly off the rails (which is where most of the divide of opinions on this show comes from).

You see, I feel these "emotional crescendos" would've been totally ineffective if they weren't preceded by the show's slow--oft times either overly mellow or overly dramatic--introduction to the characters, the world, and some of their history.

Man, you make me want to watch this series again.Anyway, your remark concerning the lush animation of the mecha-surfing action and it being a gimmick kind of rubs me the wrong way. I mean, it is an animated series after all. To me that means that form should be important no matter the content. To say that it's a gimmick seems to undermine the whole point of the animated medium.

I don't think it's darker than the creators realize. It's intentionally dark and will drive some of the plot of this series. While Renton is, indeed, pretty naive as a character, this series is partly about trying to live with the decisions that one makes and trying to make up for the mistakes that were made.Also, while the Gekkostate crew did terrible things in the war, they were soldiers after ...
