I also think that Phantom Blood was the best story arc until now. It had a certain kind of melodrama which I liked a lot. Still the story could have been developed more, especially with the relationship between Jojo, Erina and Dio. Does the Ripple still matter in Starship Crusaders? I sometimes have the feeling as if I'm watching a totally different series.

The Ripple doesn't matter anymore. There's no Pillar Men, no Stone Masks, and Joseph didn't bother to really keep his training up. Ripple still works on vampires, but if a vampire has a Stand, a Ripple user who didn't would die.

Stands are pretty much the face of the series and the main draw, and it's so weird to see so many people on different forums being like "What about the Ripple? Why Stands?" when most (but definitely not all) old school JoJo fans don't even care about the Ripple. I know I don't. Araki doesn't either, pretty sure there was a thing where he said he had done everything he could think of with it. Stands can pretty much be and do anything, they aren't tied to as many rules as the Ripple.

I like to think of Jotaro as a guy who is trying really hard to be a total badass. I mean, he already is one because he's got Joestar blood, but there's enough evidence (like a lot of his terrible one liners which I know David Pro won't leave out) that he's just trying really hard to be this delinquent badass. Like, we already see he loves his mom, he's just too "cool" to show it, and she's the only one who knows that.

I know one of his early profiles from the manga mentions that he doesn't show his emotions because he thinks everyone can tell how he feel just by looking at him. Yeah, real cool, Jotaro. Only your mom can do it.

I think he's cool

And Stardust Crusaders really does start the better cast dynamic that stays with the rest of the series, where everyone is actually competent and doesn't need that Part's JoJo to step in to save them/finish the job. Baron Zeppeli, Lisa Lisa and Caesar all kinda suffered because of that.

@takashichea:

It gets worse (...better?) later on. A lot of manga chapters are named after a character's special ability, so later on you'll see "Green Day" or "Metallica" 1, 2, 3 etc. It's why licensing the series can be a nightmare. All Star Battle on PS3 just came out in the states and I'd say more than half of the names in it got changed.

Araki is obsessed with western music and movies. I believe they said Roundabout was used as the ending for season one because it's a favorite of his and he was listening to a lot of Yes while writing parts 1 and 2.

I finished the Battle Tendency arc last night. I like Joseph, but some of his quirks was annoying especially when he predicts what his enemies would say. He's more funny and entertaining than Jonathan, but I find Jonathan less overbearing and a cool gentlemen.

I was reading your and Tom's comments on the recent W &L article. I wish I got those references, but I guess it's another way for fans to enjoy who are rooted in music and old video games. I still enjoy the show.

Were there less video game, music, or cultural references in Battle Tendency than Phantom Blood arc? I felt I didn't find anything.

Besides that, Lisa Lisa was a surprise to me when the family portrait was revealed. I had thought Jonathan didn't have enough "alone" time with Erina. I thought he didn't had sex with Erina to produce an offspring. I assumed the baby whom Erina had saved was Joseph's father.

Joseph is pretty much The Mentalist if he was a smartass vampire-punching Brit. He's even better as a cranky old dude in Stardust Crusaders.

BT has a lot of references, definitely. Some are kinda lost because of CR's subs (although the Pillar Men's spellings are official, they're clearly references), but there's Wamuu (Wham!), Esidisi (AC/DC) and Kars (The Cars) and Santviento (is supposed to be Santana, as in Carlos Santana), Loggins and Messina (changed to Logs and Meshina I think in the subs), Lisa Lisa (Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam), Aja is an album by Steely Dan, vampire Wired Beck (Jeff Beck's album Wired), Suzie Q (singer Suzie Quatro, also an album by Creedence Clearwater Revival "Susie Q").

Does anyone know what happened to his father? Where is he?

Jotaro's? All that's ever said is he is on tour as a jazz musician. He's pretty irrelevant overall.

I'm finished the Phantom Blood part, but I'll wait for Tom to catch up. Erina was in the dark with Dio and Jojo's fight. I haven't seen a lot of shows that kill the main character. I was surprised.

Yeah, for as much as Phantom Blood is literally just Fist Of The North Star + Vampires, I think the ending is the strongest point just because it does that. It's funny but because even though it's an adaptation of an older series, it coming out in today's anime (or more shonen anime) climate makes it stand out from newer series, solely on the fact that even the main character can die.

Ep 126 -

Hype levels so high off the charts that my heart stopped.

More I watch the ending the more I love it. Perfect fit.

@LHWKnight:

Imported the game when it came out in Japan last year when I was sure it wouldn't have a US release :( Gonna get the US version, even though some of the name changes are really baffling and kinda bad (Polnareff->Eiffel and Sticky Fingers->Zipper Man? ugh). Platinum'd the JP version, not that it was hard to get all the trophies, but still, I really love that game as a JoJo game, even though it's pretty average as an actual fighting game, although they've already patched a number of issues it had.

David Productions are the best studio. So cheesy and so perfect.

I ended up watching up to episode 7 for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure instead of waiting for Tom Pinchuk to do his W & L articles. It was hard to put down the anime and sleep last night.

It's an addicting show to watch.

Hell yeah! You're so close to one of the best main characters in all anime/manga. You'll definitely know when you get there.

Opening is GODDAMN HYPE. Visuals are so good and the song is growing on me after repeated viewings.

we get introduced to the first assassin in this episode, and I kid you not, his stands ability reminds me of another character from Medaka box that Kumagawa had to face in the last episode of the second season.

Nisio is a confirmed JoJo fanboy. He even wrote one of the 25th anniversary JoJo light novels.

Also I think one of the early Stardust volumes had a character bio on Jotaro that mentions him thinking that everyone can tell his emotions just by looking at him, so he never bothers to be anything other than his usual self. So far, I think only his mom has that ability, lol.

The background music in those trailers is so damn boss. Also, the opening is going to be STAND PROUD by Jin Hashimoto, who apparently does some Kamen Rider themes. The ending is still unknown, but the first season's use of Roundabout by YES was kind of a secret (even though it was leaked) right up until airing. That's the thing that has me excited, did they license another classic rock song?

The recent episode had some really good role reversal, with the "villain" refusing to fight and wanting to have an open discussion, even though a bit naively idealistic, and the "hero" trying to goad him into combat, before being swayed himself. It's really good , and I really enjoy the way Togashi subverts some of the usual shonen expectations.

Youpi is interesting because he's mentally evolving as the invasion has gone on. Going from only just following the King's orders and never thinking for himself to losing control, regaining control, faking Knuckle out, etc, is pretty great for the most "simple" of the 3 Guards. Extra scary though, when combined with his shapeshifting, extreme strength and huge aura pool.

@Marshal Victory:

The manga actually has a little timer in the corner showing the time each event takes place (since it's all happening at the same time). Also Zeno was lamenting his attack striking Komugi. He takes pride in his job, fucking up and hurting a non-target is probably a blemish on his pride.

Cheetu's last moments are hilarious and so fitting of him. He tries so hard to make himself be more than just an idiot chump and still he goes out like a no-name fodder ant.

Knuckle is definitely one of my favorite HxH characters (along with Morel), and his scenes in this episode are great. "Screw the world and our plans, I'm gonna get my revenge for being humiliated! Oh shit never mind getting the fuck out of here. Okay let's try again!"

116 really shows a lot about what this arc has been about in regards to what "humanity" is. The King is slowly becoming more humanlike, thinking outside of his own royal "bubble" and figure out where he belongs in the world, and Pitou doing everything to save the life of another and yet you have Gon throwing himself away in favor of his rage, willing to kill his enemy without caring about the collateral damage (Komugi's surgery). Netero is presented as an almost God of battle, beyond any other humans shown. And everyone else, Ant and Human, are just trying to make sense of a crazy situation the only ways they know how.

And this episode makes Gon look almost villain-like, with the evil murderous creature being portrayed as a protective "mother". And that's fucking great.
