Out of the roughly 230 complete anime I've seen these are the 15 that I would give a perfect 5 out of 5 stars to. I'd recommend all of these to any anime fan and consider them masterpieces.

1. Cowboy Bebop
First saw this show 10 years ago and it's still my all time favorite anime. Just all around amazing in every aspect: animation, sound, music, dialog, stories, characters. I'd recommend this show to everyone, anime and non anime fans a like. |

2. FLCL
When I first saw this show I watched it straight through in one sitting and was just mesmerized by it. Then the very next day I was thinking about how good the show was and decided to watch all 6 episodes again straight through and ejoyed it even more. Perfect example of how less can be more. 6 perfect episodes. |
3. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
I'm putting the 1st and 2nd gig together as one here. Some of the best production values I've ever seen in a show and some of the most compelling thought provoking stories I've seen made even better by an awesome cast of characters. Simply amazing. |
4. Mushi-Shi
The final show that rounds out my person "masterpiece" level foursome. Beautiful art and probably the best story telling I've seen in an anime. I love episodic style shows and this is a masterpiece. |
5. Millenium Actress
As you can probably tell from this list Satoshi Kon is my all time favorite anime director and this would be my favorite of his works. An incredibly told story and one of the best love stories I've seen in an anime. The way kon blends fantasy and reality is astonishing and this is truly his best example of that. |
6. Paranoia Agent (TV)
Getting a full 13 episodes of Kon greatness is more then I could ever ask for. Given a full season he manages to tell an engrossing, compelling and thrilling story. Trying to play detective yourself alone with the characters makes this a fascinating show to watch with an unbelievable ending. |
7. Tokyo Godfathers
Rounding out my trio of Kon love is his most different work. An endearing story about the possibility of miracles with incredible character to show us they are possible. Everyone should watch this movie. |
8. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
What some people might call gimmicky concept and bad story with an annoying lead I'd say was a really fresh idea, with a well told interesting story. The key though is those characters that warp us from episode to episode with Haruhi and Kyon being the focal point. |
9. BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
The is one of the first times I watched the show as it was airing and the waiting for each episode was unbearable. I would probably re-watched each episode 2 or 3 times the week they came out. What a great tale o the little guy making it and what an amazing conclusion to a show that managed to avoid an "finished before the manga" problems that plague many. |
10. Berserk
Another show that finished WELL before the manga, but still gave me a full story that was absolutely engrossing. The rough, violent, horrible, chaotic world that is presented to us is one I could just never turn away from and Guts as a character has iconic status in the world of anime as far as I'm concerned. |
11. His and Her Circumstances
While this one suffers from finishing before the manga it doesn't take away from it being the best high school story and romance story an anime has ever given us. The way the story is told, the way the show is draw and edited, all helps it just to sucking you into the lives of the two characters. |
12. NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind
What miyazaki considers his masterpiece and who am I to argue. The legendary creator certainly gives us what I believe to be his best examples of his staples, like the strong female lead and man vs. environment. Beautiful art, great characters and a wonderful story. |
13. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
I pretty much love anything Lupin. The TV series, movies, OVAs, TV specials, all of it. As far as I'm considered the cast is so good that anything they put out is gold with The Castle of Cagliostro being the crowning jewel of this legendary franchise. Another one of the few anime that I feel everyone should see. |
14. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal
A beautiful rendition of one of the best arcs of any anime ever. For fans of the anime who wanted this story these two OVAs give it to them in a manner that does justice to the most famous part of the legendary story. |
15. Scrapped Princess
Perhaps the odd ball of the bunch. What might seem like generic fantasy, adventure turned into a great and fun story on an absolutely epic level. It didn't turn out to just be some generic fantasy filler. Going on the adventure together with these characters was one that turned out to be it's own unique story. |
