Anime that may or may not be for jerks.

This basically a list of all the anime I have seen since I set up this account here on Anime Vice. It's not much, but this list is growing everyday. Check back often, and comment if you think my opinion is shit. :3

1. Big O

Batman: the Movie: The Anime, but with Mechs instead of superpowers. I LOVE this show.

2. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I watched the first season and I thought it was great. I really liked the love/hate relationship between Kyon and Haruhi

3. Ghost in the Shell

this and Stand Alone Complex are pretty rad.

4. Okami-san and her Seven Companions

I love the great self awareness that this show has.

5. Mnemosyne - Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi

I watched the first episode and it was an interesting little detective style story at first but then it went Maso-ero-hentai crazy, then ended. If every episode has some sick twisted sexual deviance in it, I'm out. I like boobs and all, but not fucking CHAINS attached to vaginas.

6. Ergo Proxy

So I thought this show was going to be about this hardcore, tough as nails, goth bitch that kicked ass and took names but it was really about the supporting character. This guy turned out to be THE "Ergo Proxy" (Which, if you watched the first few episodes actually means a great deal.) Now I've got nothing wrong with two main characters but the Character Re-L turned out to be was a sniveling little welp that couldn't do anything right. Vincent turned out to be the relatable one. All this said, I didn't really like the show. It was slow and a bit aimless. Nice atmosphere though.

7. Darker than BLACK

I've watched the first two episodes and it's interesting to say the least. I like how the end of each episode ends in a way that makes me want to watch the next one, LOST style. All the jargon is a little overwhelming (contracters, the wall, the event, dolls, ghosts, etc) but I'm catching up just fine.

8. Afro Samurai

A Black Mans Wet Dream: The Anime. Dumb as fuck IMO.

9. Tenchi Muyo

I watched this back in the days of Toonami, on Cartoon Network. I'll be sure to check this out again soon to see if I still like it. I revisited Big O and wasn't let down. Hopefully Tenchi Muyo stands up the same way.

10. Spirited Away

I've watched this movie twice. I don't fucking get it. Someone tell what is so special about this movie.

11. Paprika

So I really enjoyed this movie. I don't think it's particularly good but I had a fun time with it. The characters were good, the mind trippy parts were far out and it was all tied to something that can be easily explained; Dreams. Also, Paprika, the character, is as cute as a fucking button. Now I'm not talking like... cute in a "haruhi Suzimya" kind of way but a way that if Paprika were a real girl I would date her. I wouldn't really recommend this movie, but I enjoyed my time with it. I also agree with the Video review of this on the site. It does delve into the Freudian tendencies more than something like Inception. Also, the animation was quite good.

12. Black Lagoon

So I finished the first 8 episodes of season one and I LOVE this show. I really like the love/hate (mostly hate) relationship between Rock and Revy. That scene in the submarine was really well done and the episodes following were very tense and created a field of hate between Rock and Revy but the episode where Rock confronts revy about there little beef was extremely cathartic for me. It felt good for me to see them get that shit off their chest. I will keep watching and I'm sure I'll have fun with this show.

13. Samurai Champloo

A pretty fun spin on the Samurai anime business. I'm enjoying it and the constant rivalry between the two dudes (I forget their names) is interesting, I guess. I don't really like the urban, black dudes fantasy spin on it. Like the rap theme song, and the turn table transitions. It DOESN'T need that. It would still be just as great if it didn't have that shit. I got a bad taste from that stuff similarly to what I got from Afro Samurai. Is there some unseen correlation between black men and samurai anime? Someone help me out here. I will get around to finishing the first few episodes and probably the whole first season of this. It's pretty good.

14. Neon Genesis Evangelion

This seems to come from the same vein as The Big O, but the episodes aren't stand alone. The quality in the animation is kind of low, much like Big O, but it doesn't feel as likable to me and the characters aren't as particular interesting. I also don't really like Mech Battle shows and the reason I like Big O so much is because it is very Noir and the characters are great. For the most part I will have to pass on this show. I don't really want to watch any more of it.

15. Tokyo Godfathers

This movie was pretty great. I like the character interaction that made Mkuyi, Gin, and Hana seem like a dysfunctional family. The middle of the movie was a little slow but I really liked the movie overall. There was a nice twist and loose ends were tied up. I wouldn't mind seeing another movie with these same characters. They were all charming. Also, the animation was impressive. I think it's the same animator as Paprika.

16. Perfect Blue

So... this movie started out fine, buy establishing who the main character was and setting up some foreshadowing about the creepy one eyed dude that would follow here around but this movie ended up taking a nose dive and Fast. There were some very memorable parts of the movie that stuck out to me, though. Most notably was the scene were our heroine was becoming an established actress and was asked to act out a scene in which she would be a rape victim. The scene was so off putting vivid that I thought something had gone wrong and the male actor had ACTAULLY started getting busy. I think the director or writer or whoever WANTED me to feel that, because I suppose the main character may have felt that way. I can appreciate the shock value from a scene like this, but it didn't have to be that vivid. From then on the movie continually fucks yer mind over and tricks you into thinking things are dream sequences. It reminded me of that horrible movie Vanilla Sky. It wasn't quite that bad, and did NOT end up being one big dream, but it may as well have been. I didn't really like this movie, and I can't say that I recommend it. It was okay at best.

17. Gurren Lagann

So I've watched the first episode of the first season at the recommendation of one soylentgreen. I have never really liked mech based anime but I have to say I like this one so far. It's interesting and quirky. I'll probably watch the first season and enjoy the whole thing. If I like it enough I may move onto later seasons. Probably not though.

18. Spice and Wolf

I loved it so much I wrote a review. Check it out. http://www.animevice.com/spice-and-wolf/11-2491/user-reviews/?review_id=911

19. Avatar: The Last Airbender

I'm reluctant to put this on here because I don't really consider this American cartoon "Anime" but damn it if this show isn't great. The whole relationship between Aang and Kitara is tense but relatable, the action is pretty awesome, and Toph is pretty awesome. The only thing about the show that holds it back is the Y7 rating. This show could be maturer and be just as good and probably better. Also, the writers saw it fit to throw in ANYTHING at ANYTIME that could be considered comic relief. Not all of it sticks, and most of it ruins perfectly good dramatic scenes, but it can be funny at times.

20. Rio - Rainbow Gate!

So this show is... interesting. I'm not a real big fan of Moe focused show. Now I can appreciate some boobage now and then, and I love a good tease, but when a show's main point is that, it kind of loses me. I've only seen the first episode so maybe it gets better but I doubt that very seriously. I mean... if I wanted a bunch of boobs and up skirts, I go watch hentai. Actually, I might just do that. The gambling aspect could be interesting though.

21. Kemeko Deluxe!

I'm watching the first episode now and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I'm gettig a real Tenchi Muyo vibe from this and I've had a few laughs. Not many shows can make me laugh. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of this.

22. Gilgamesh

I've only watched the first episode and the thing that stands out the most is the "different" animation style that reminds me of something like Captain Planet or Magical School Bus. The atmosphere is a lot like Ergo Proxy but the quality of the show isn't great. I honestly don't care about this show and I won't be watching any more of the episodes.

23. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

This show is fucking bonkers. I really like it. First two episodes have me hooked.

24. Petite Cossette

I watched the first half of this. It's alright... it's a little disjointed but I imagine it has a neat ending. I'll probably finish it.

25. Dead Space: Downfall

I've watched the first few minutes of this. The animation is terrible, the voice acting is terrible. The sequence of events is good though. I feel like the guy that wrote that Dead Space comic animated this movie. I will finish it though. I must.

26. Mushi-Shi

I watched the first episode of this. I liked the premise. The whole "Basic form of Life" thing could be used to explain a lot of crazy and unique shit. If it is all about this dude Ginko (or whatever his name is) walking around and doing stuff, it could be cool. I might watch more.

27. Baccano!

FUCK! There are a lot of characters in this show. I really like it though. The 1930s America has always appealed to me in terms of atmosphere and aesthetic. There is almost no explanation to who the characters are, or what their purpose is. All I've gathered so far is... Immortal madness and Flying Pussy Foot. I've watched 3 episodes which means I will probably watch plenty more.

28. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

This show is alright. I don't really like mechs but this was recommended by my Best Friend, Ernesto. He said he watched all the shows in one sitting and I can see why. The premise is interesting but the art looks like it fell out of fucking Yu-Gi-Oh.

29. Lucky Star

Holy shit, Lucky Star! I really really like this show. I watch is when I have time and love it. Imagine Seinfeld, but the Japanese High School Girl edition and that is what Lucky Star is. It's so good.

30. Death Note

So I started out reading the manga, but I couldn't buy all of the issues so I switched to watching this on Instant on Netflix. I prefer the Manga, but this show is amazing, regardless of its format. Light Yagami is a great character that is only enhanced by his rivalry and hatred of his polar opposite L (Ryuzaki/ryuga). I am at a part where I don't know if I like the show still, but I know for a fact that there were many time where I couldn't help but shout "OH SHIT" in the Barnes and Noble I was reading the early issues of the manga in. This shows premise, execution, twists, and characters are all great. I love this show. The show is slowing down for me though. I don't know if I will keep watching/reading. It's getting away from the best part of the show; the rivalry between Ryuzaki and Light Yagami.

31. Bunny Drop

I've watched the first episode. I really liked the art, but not the animation. The animation is a little stiff. I will certainly watch more of this show because the character interaction between Rin and what's-his-face.

32. My Ordinary Life

I watched the first episode of this at an Anime club at my college and this show is a silly good time. It is... silly in ways that are absurd, in a charming way.

33. Full Metal Panic!

I've watched the first few episodes and I think this show is quite something. The most recent episodes I have watched have NOTHING to do with the things I care about of the show but I hope the show will pick up because I really enjoy the love hate relationship between KANAME and Sosuke.

If you think Big O is like Batman the movie, then you should definitely check out the first season of Darker than Black if you have not done so already. It's got a Chinese Electric Batman as a protagonist (though the story universe is probably closer to X-Men).

@DocHaus: I will most certainly check that out.  Thanks for the recommendation!

You can easily toss in Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Agreed on Ghost in the Shell. Also, this list reminds that Big O exists. I should check that out again.

I'll be sure to check those out.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Also, I watched the first season of Big O again recently and it still holds up.  You should revisit that wonderful show.

Over at Giant Bomb there's a purge going on. I believe it's happening here as well. Still, lots of pretty pictures.

I really enjoyed Darker than Black, the first season at least. Season two kind of lost me at some point.
Voxelon April 24, 2011 at 10:06 p.m.
The second season of Haruhi is completely fucked. Don't watch it if you were planning to. Just watch the movie instead; it's fantastic.

Yeah! It's also really long.... like, over 2 hours or something crazy like that. But totally worth it!

To answer your question: Samurai Champloo is basically an anime samurai version of a spaghetti western, animated by BONES and infused with the hiphop of the late Japanese DJ Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force of Nature and more (Shinichiro Watanabe has a knack for background music). Don't expect much in the way of plot or consistency, but the action scenes are still pretty fun. Bonus note: Steve Blum voices Mugen in the dub.

As for Afro Samurai...there's a different story about it: there was a Japanese guy who was really, really into the Wu-Tang Clan and similar rap artists as a teenager, and drew his own little comic about an Afro Samurai. Kind of the inverse of the lonely weeaboo in America who draws himself as a samurai with long hair and a big sword. Somehow the comic fell into the hands of a producer from Gonzo, and they made a miniseries out of it. Later, Samuel L. Jackson saw a trailer of the show in development and decided he had to star in it, and the RZA decided to provide some tracks in the background on top of that. This is what I've found from various internet sources, so take it as you will.

Samurai Champloo is pretty incredible. It's the only anime where I unquestioningly love all of the main characters. They're so great.

@DocHaus: Yeah I thought I recognized that dudes voice.  I just didn't know where I had heard him before.

I will admit I really like all the main characters but The Big O is the only one where I unconditionally loved the characters.
