Quests » problem...

No you just have to find the three franchises with a lot of moe in them in the wiki. If you get stuck on that feel free to ask for a hint.

*Sorry for double post but I'm afraid to edit the previous one in case one of the photos disappears.*

Oh and as for the backpack, which is kind of sitting there, I lack an infinitely deep invisible backpack to store some items in and so I carried a few valuable things in there instead. So when I got most pictures taken I took it off and tried to get it out of the shot so it wouldn't clash with the costume especially since it bunched up Snow's duster a bit.

" @Konanda:  Yes weapons are a pain...as goes any prop really. I suck at doing them personally haha.  You cosplayed as Snow? Do you have pics? I'd love to see! "

Sure most of them I uploaded on Facebook and meant to put on Photobucket but never got around to it. I have a couple on here though. I could upload some more although a bunch of them are ones the friends I met from Ottawa took. Also I don't want to derail the thread too much. If you want to see some more pics though feel free to add me on Facebook. (via PM of course) Plus uploading and posting a large amount of 2592 x 3456 JPGs is fairly frustrating when it comes to this site. (I already had one of the ones in the stack disappear during the process of making this post post)

I also have some I took at Fan Expo. (It's a multi-genre convention like San Diego Comic-Con except it's about 1/3rd by attendees of that size [it would be smaller if it wasn't for people in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. Lake Ontario and Erie in particular crossing the border])

Anyway I hope you enjoy the photos. I think it was decent for my first cosplay. The only things that bothered me too much was that since I just had some videos and screenshots to go over some of the finer details like the object wrapped around his right sleeve is not as detailed and that the mesh/undershirt thing he has isn't as ripped just due to the structural integrity of such an article of clothing not allowing it to happen and of course I'm not some huge bodybuilder so I'm not as ripped as a videogame character.

*Fun note about the pic with the two Vanilles and Lightning is that the Vanille that's not in the other pics and Lightning happened to be coincidentally just a couple rooms down from my hotel room. I only saw them twice during the con though and never got their names.

I may need just a little more work on my poses.

" @Konanda:  Thank you very much! I'll be rewearing it next Fanime as well (and again without the gun...eh)

@Kelleth: I didn't see any drool while walking around in Yoko haha. A lot of guys did want my picture but that's about it. No creepy guys tried to touch me or something. "

Well weapons are kind of just a pain. When I went to my first con last year (Anime North) there was a huge line in the TCC just for weapons checking and from what I heard it would take quite a while to get to the end.

Luckily I didn't have to worry about stuff like that since I cosplayed Snow Villiers and well he just punches guys. It was strange though for the new Final Fantasy game only a few people knew who I was (granted it wasn't even released in Japan until later that year) except for people at the Final Fantasy panel and an awesome group of people from Ottawa that I ended up meeting (mainly because the girl dressed as Oerba Dia Vanille was quite adamant I should take a bunch of pictures with her, which I was more than happy to) hung out with for a good portion of the con.

I'm going to be cosplaying as Snow again this year although the same group I met was wanting to do a mock wedding photoshoot on one of the days (since in the game Snow and Serah are engaged) so that will be interesting to be Snow but in a suit. (I'm just using the suit I use for job interviews for the summer break from university, which is fairly formal but nothing hugely standout)

@RedRoses: I thought your Yoko cosplay was quite nice.

90 days old counts for Rerunner.

Anyway I just finished the set with #6. I watched pretty much everything on page 5 and older since they were there before I was on the site.

Quests » Opinion based quests?

" @willyvereb: @Lan: @Whiskeyjack:
From what I've found, apparently some of that is the limitation of the quest system itself, since you are apparently only allowed one clue per quest, so a multi-answer/diverse question like that can't have 1 clue that helps them all.

God help you all, I think I'll be helping write the next batch of quests, so I think the solution would be to take quests like the romantics and basics, and turn them into a Full set, with low point quest-chains. They'll still have some subjective aspects, but they'll also have clues, which could help actually perceive an answer.

Hmm ya I could see the Covering the Basics quest be difficult from those who didn't get into anime in the 90s or know about what was popular than.
Yeah, an 80's+ fan presumably was cognizant of such things, but I could make a similar argument that shows like Naruto were vital to fans who started in like, the mid 2000's. Maybe even inuyasha. Anyone with a late night habit, and Cartoon Network has probably seen 50+ episodes of that series accidentally. "

To the first point I know that in some of the GiantBomb quest they would include multiple hints coupled into one hint. I've also seen this in the God of Manga quest set. (I forget which quest from that set exactly) Personally I don't think adding multiple hints for each peice of the quest (for the scavenger ones that require finding more than one page) would be the right way to go since part of the cool thing about them is just seeing how far I can get on my own before seeing if the community has had trouble on the quest and what they may have discovered that I didn't so than we can help each other by trading hints.

Fair enough, but how far back or forward do you determine when the cut off is. Although I would agree that maybe it would be a good idea for a quest in the future to incorporate something like that. Like for instance could do "Ninjas, Pirates and Hollows! Oh My" although that one sounds way too easy.

Quests » Lend Me Your Ears: Soooo Blog Forum posts don`t count?

Well Dear Diary is for making a blog so yes. What I get from Lend Me Your Ears is like many of the generic quests that are the same here as well as on GiantBomb and ComicVine they are designed to introduce the user to a section of the site that they may have otherwise never noticed or just ignored so the purpose of that quest is to direct the user to the forums directly instead of by something like a blog.

Quests » Opinion based quests?

 Well I think some of it might just have to do with what the person(s) who ended up coming up with what the quest should be have their own background, which means they probably share some of what the majority of people are going to think of but a few that are more of what they encountered. I know for instance on GiantBomb a bunch of quests on there rely on the user knowing some references, inside jokes and games that the staff their have a special place for. (some of the Globe Trotter quests and Leftovers come to mind)

Personally I like them to be somewhat challenging though and if I just end up solving everything I'm a little bummed.

@Lan:

Hmm ya I could see the Covering the Basics quest be difficult from those who didn't get into anime in the 90s or know about what was popular than. Since with the exception of the 4th answer those were all really popular in North America at least in the 90s. That said I thought of the 4th one just from having heard it referenced so many times in pop culture (from people in various enthusiast media to other animated shows [one example I can think of being Family Guy]) because so many people that grew up in the 80s and mid 70s and watched reruns of it on MTV.

The movies are fairly recent ones. (They are adapted from older franchises of course) So you can ignore any live action movie of one of his properties that didn't come out in the last decade. Also you have to go to the movie page not the franchise or series.

Quests » How many quest actually have to do with anime?

@Burntlettuce said:

"I am aware that animevice's wiki is the least updated out of the wiskey sites, so I understand why so many of the quest have to do with the wiki. I guess I got spoiled with Giant bomb's quest and how much they actually had to do with videogames, even when they were first released.  "

Those had to do with searching through their wiki as well.

Giantbomb's quests have the same generic quests of filling out pages for the wiki along with all the other quests, which don't relate to the primary interest of the site (like linking facebook or twitter) as well. They were just able to have more quests that were of the type of searching through the wiki for developer/game/composer/insert game related thing here simply because their wiki is more expansive.
Also the system was initially made for GiantBomb, which is just a matter of Whiskey Media focusing the development of new structural features on the site, which has the largest audience so that they can get the most feedback and have a larger user base to stress test and find errors involved with the new feature. Since it's a brand new feature that isn't present in either of the sister sites of course they have to open with more since it would not be as momentous if everyone just zoomed through it due to not enough content. Animevice having a smaller user base and a smaller and generally more empty (in terms of the content/completness in each page) wiki means they probably are not going to run into people running out of quests to do as fast and they have less material to dig through in making them. The same goes if you look at ComicVine, they currently only have 3 quests which involve going through the wiki looking for creators/characters from comics plus one limited edition quest, which is also of this type. Besides that limited edition quest that is the same amount that AnimeVice currently has. That doesn't mean it will stay that way and if it moves a similar pace to the way GiantBomb's has been going I'm guessing there will probably be a new quest set

Also keep in mind that the staff who I'm guessing are primarly the ones* who think up what should be in those scavanger type quests (hence why in the GiantBomb ones you probably saw many inside jokes or self-referential quests) and than provide these suggestions to the software engineers and the artist who figure out how to integrate that into a quest.

I'm with you saying that more quests would be awesome but, realize that they can only put so many out at a time to keep it fresh and interesting and to have a relatively constant stream of them. (this is of course given the level of interest, which seems quite large on all of them so far) I mean if you look at Dave/snide's post about it on each of the sites he has stated that the artist they have doing the art for the quest has been working on this project ever since last October, which is over half a year. I'm sure she worked on other projects as well but that still implies to me that they have quite a buffer of quests that they will roll out at regular intervals to keep up with the development of new ones assuming their is interest in the feature. So I didn't mean to sound antagonistic or anything but instead just give it some time.

*I'm sure there is input from other employees of Whiskey Media who have their own knowledge of each particular hobby/interest relating to the site who contribute suggestions/ideas for quests as well.

Quests » How many quest actually have to do with anime?

Um it did just launch two days ago and the ones that have to do with the site are just the same kind of ones that are across the other wiskey media sites with quests. The reason the scavenger type quests aren't as plentiful probably has to do with the wiki not being as full compared to say Giantbomb's wiki, which probably has to do with most of the people on here being not as obssessed with the ordinary wiki points as they are on the site and the smaller user base.

I'm going to take a guess and say it's highly likely there will be more quests that involve hunting through the wiki in the future. It's just things take time.

General Discussion » The Questions Thread

What are your thoughts on western stereotypes in manga/anime. This could be anything from parody of such stereotypes to more moderate ignorance to downright xenophobic prejudice and/or racism.

Some examples in the order above, western characters in Hetalia*, the typical stock western character with an accent usually super pale with blond hair and blue eyes , David Rice from Majin Tantei NĊgami Neuro comes to mind and is somewhat more skewed towards American stereotypes. [ie. that everyone in the U.S. is carrying a pistol on them at all times and being overly patroitic to the point of arrogance as seen in the guys rant when he is accused of being the murderer] Oh and fun fact about the last one, the episode/chapter he appears in has the moral of cultural sensitivity.

*bonus points for actually breaking it into each country's stereotypes.

Just Manga » What are you reading?

@John_Martone:
This post made me think I haven't added volume 8 to the database yet. So I checked if someone had or not and than submitted a proposal. Hopefully once I get into a less hectic routine during the summer (funny how a 40 hour work week in a co-op/summer student placement is less hectic than university is o.O) I'll be able to fill some of the stuff of what's in them in.

Hanamaru Youchien » The best episode endings are always even

Is it just me or are all the endings to the even numbered episodes amazing where the odd ones are fairly average?

I just saw episode 6 and the trend seems to be sticking where the even numbered endings are spectacular and the odd ones some really cutesy but for the most part kind of average endings.
