 Welcome to the NHK
 Welcome to the NHK
Plot Summary: Satou Tatsuhiro, a 22 year old young man, is a NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) and a hikikomori (meaning acute social withdrawal). He believes everything around him is a conspiracy, including the reason why many people, himself included, become hikikomori. Due to this, Satou creates a strange conspiracy theory which includes the Nihon Hikikomori Kyōkai (NHK), a secret organization with the intention of producing a hikikomori filled world. Satou intends to break free from the NHK's clutches, but cannot, since he finds it too frightening to go outdoors by himself; that is, until he meets Misaki Nakahara, who selects Satou for her "project" that she claims will cure him of his hikikomori ways.   ( ANN)
The next anime that was on my "to check out" was Welcome to the NHK.  At its heart, Welcome to the NHK is a dark comedy show.  What's a dark comedy?  Well, the show has a dark tone to it but, it also has comedy elements to it.
The story resolves around Tatsuhiro Satou, a NEET and a hikkomori.  Tatsuhiro just sits in his room and does absolutely nothing and blames it on the NHK.   One day
This is our main dude, Tatsuhiro.
This is our main dude, Tatsuhiro.
Tatsuhiro meets Nakahara while with her Aunt handing out magazines about people being hikkomori.  While talking to them, Tatsuhiro starts filliping out and then shuts the door them.  Later he sees a note from Nakahara to meet her at the park that night.  Once at Taksuhiro goes to the park Nakahara proposes a project for Tatsuhiro to make rid of his hikkomori ways.  During this time Tatsuhiro takes the contract but doesn't sign it right a way.  The following night he goes to meet her again but, doesn't bring back the contract for the project because he tells he is busy with is stay at home job so she asks him to bring the contract the following night.  During the next day Tatsuhiro finally goes and stops his next door neighbor from play his anime music very loud.  Once he barges in he finds out that he is actually Kaoru Yamazaki, an otaku and an old high school friend.  This is when Tatsuhiro finds out that Kaoru is actually a game creator and asks to borrow his game design book.  During that night he shows the book to Nakahara and she asks to see some of his work.  Once she does, he says that he doesn't have anything done at the moment but, promises to show her the game in a month.  Once Nakahara leaves Tatsuhiro finds out that Kaoru was actually there and he was just ling to her.
And so this is how the shows starts out.  Along the way Tatsuhiro's life goes up and down.  He tries to make an eroge game to show to Kaoru (which ends up being really bad and not selling at all), joins a group of people who want to commit suicide (but end up not actually doing it), trying to make real money of an MMO (and fails), gets suckered to buy stuff from a multi-level marketing company, and other stuff was well.
After finishing up this show I thought to myself, this was one of the best anime shows that I have watched yet.  While the story is dark, it's very interesting and keeps you hocked.  All they characters are very enjoyable in their own has.  Tatsuhiro being a total nut-job, Kaoru who is the otaku nut-job, and Nakahara being a sweet girl trying to help Tatsuhiro.  The music was very good and set the atmosphere of the show perfectly.  The animation of the show was very well done.  At some moments it looks a little bad but, it was great.
Welcome to the NHK is an anime that everyone should watch.  The main draw to the show is the story.  If you are looking for something new to watch, watch this.  This is my second time doing this.
My Score - 5/5
