 School Rumble
 School Rumble
The following review is for the entire School Rumble anime series.  This covers School Rumble , School Rumble: Extra Class (OVAs), School Rumble: Second Semester , and School Rumble: Third Semester (OVAs).

School Rumble is anime adaptation of the manga of the same name.  There are 26 episodes in the first season, 26 episodes in the second season, and 4 OVAs.  School Rumble was animated by Studio Comet and directed by Shinji Takamatsu (Season 1, Extra Class, and Third Semester) and Takaomi Kanasaki (Season 2).

Brief Overview

School Rumble is a romantic comedy with over the top exaggeration for comedic effect.  The protagonists of the show are Tenma Tsukamoto and Kenji Harima.  Tenma is a charming and hyper cute girl who isn't the brightest.  Kenji is a bad ass who gets into fights a lot, but softens as the show goes by.  There is a love triangle between these two characters.  Tenma loves Oji Karasuma, a really plain guy with no outstanding features, Kenji likes Tenma, and Oji just sits there staring off into space.  Through the show Tenma and Kenji always try to confess there love, but they always fail and something ridiculous usually happens.  The love triangle gets even more complicated when Yakumo Tsukamoto and Eri Sawachika get thrown into the mix as well.  While those two are the main protagonists of the show, other love relationships happen between other classmates as well.

My Thoughts

School Rumble has to be one of the most ridiculous romantic comedies I have seen thus far (aside from My Bride is a Mermaid) and that is why I loved it.
Tenma, our heroine of the show.
Tenma, our heroine of the show.

There are tons of enjoyable character through out the show, some more enjoyable the others.  Tenma is a sweet girl that's hard not to hate, even though she is dumb.  Kenji is the hard ass that everyone wants to be.  Kicking ass and trying to get his girl.  Oji may be plain dude, but he hast his goofy moments as well like wearing a turtle outfit in the rain.  There are some great side characters as well that play more important roles as the show goes on.  Haruki Hanai is the class president of 2-C.  He wants everything done right and he wants everyone to follow the rules.  Haruki has his goofy moments as well like getting stuck to a kite for 2 weeks and floats around Japan.  Another side character I enjoyed was Karen Ichijou.  Why did I like her? Well, she is a super sweet girl, but she is probably the strongest character in the whole show.  You see her lifting a piano and ease.  I wish I could do that.

There are tons of enjoyable moments through out the show from love to over the top crazy.  One of the most memorable scenes for was the the "Survival Game" during the first few episodes of the second season.  "Survival Game" was basically a capture the flag game between two teams.  If Kenji's team one, they would do a play the school festival.  If Haruki's team wins, they will do a cafe for the festival.  So why was this so memorable?  They students wear shooting guns at each other.  Sure they weren't real guns, but it was just so crazy and out of place that it was fantastic.  Another memorable part was the horse fighting part of the school's athletic day.  It starts out normaly, but goes crazy with groups combining to make a giant tower, to fists and punches to get the other team's headbands.  There are some peaceful moments as well like when the cast watches a meteor shower go by.  It's has nice a peaceful music and and fits the ton perfectly.  Another memorable moment is when Kenji get's his head shaved by Eri.  You looks like an old fart with his new hairdo.  One other thing I found that was goofy is that Kenji can grow his bread pretty fast.

 Don't mess with Kenji.
 Don't mess with Kenji.
While I did love the cast of characters and the over the top comedy, there were some issues I had.  One issue was the animation.  At times it looked from really goofy to just plane bad.  Another one is the love relationships.  They often get close to something happening , but the relationships stay the same through out the whole series.  The was 3D used in the show as well, which looked pretty bad.  It looked like a bad CG Saturday Morning cartoon.  And last and certainly not least is Lala Gonzalez.  Don't get me wrong, she is a goofy character that fits in with the others, but her voice is the loudest thing I have ever heard for a girl.  I'm not sure who screams more; Yami Yugi, Lala, or the entire cast of Dragon Ball Z.  These are just some issues that I had, but that didn't hurt my enjoyment of the show.

Overall I had a blast with the show.  The show had tons of great characters and the comedy was top notch.  If it weren't for those issues, this would be a perfect comedy show.  Looking for a new comedy show?  Try this out!  Looking for a new romantic comedy?  Try this out!  Looking for a new deep romance show?  You are looking in the wrong place.

My Score - 4.5/5

Blog Thing

Short blog this time.  The next show I'm going to check out is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.  The show has been on my radar for a while now, but I'm finally going to watch the series.  Game wise, nothing new recently.  I'm hoping to pick up Virtua Fighter 5 some time this weekend.  It's been around since 2007 and now since it's dirt cheap, I'm finally going to pick it up.

That's it.  :P

 Lucky Star
 Lucky Star
Lucky Star is in anime adaptation of the manga of the same name.  There are 24 episodes and 1 OVA, animated by Kyoto Animation, and directed by two people: Yutaka Yamamoto (Ep. 1-4) and Yasuhiro Takemoto (Ep. 5-24).  Lucky Star is a slice of life/comedy show.

Brief Overview

Lucky Star is a show about several girls attending a high school named Ryoo.  Lucky Star is an anime adaption of a 4-panel comic strip manga, so the plot is very loose.  Our main character is Konata Izumi, an otaku who is also very athletic and can do many things, but she is very lazy and is occupied with anime/manga and video games.  Some of the other important characters are:

  • Kagami Hiiragi - Kagami is Tsukasa's older twin sister.  She gets good grades and is very smart.  Kagami also likes to play video games, but not the same ones as Konata.  She likes to play shooters.  Although she is in a different class, she goes to Konata's and Tsukasa's class room all the time.  Kagami is the tsukkomi character of the show.  She is shy and emotional at times, so she can be considered a tsundere as well.
  • Tsukasa Hiiragi - Tsukasa is Kagami's younger twin sister.  Like Konata, she isn't very good and studying or sports, but she is very good at cooking.  She is the lovely, friendly, and a good person, but she is an airhead and can be clumsy at times.
  • Miyuki Takara - Miyuki is a smart, pretty, and well-mannered meganeko who is from a wealthy family.  She is in the same class with Tsukasa and Konata and and is the class president of the class.  She is very dependable and helps out other class mates often.  One thing she doesn't like is going to the dentist.

My Thoughts

Lucky Star was a very fun and enjoyable show.  There were many things that I loved about the show.  First off is the characters.  Konata is easily my favorite character.  Why?  She is otaku.  She also reminds me of myself alot.  Through out high school I was pretty smart and died well with my school work, but I was always lazy and more interested in playing video games.  Unlike me, Konata is athletic and I'm not.  The other main charters were great as well, especially Tsukasa.  I loved here cuteness.  She is just to adorable.  There are some great side characters as well like the store manager of the store that Konata loves to visit, Meito Anizawa.  He thinks of Konata as his number one customer and every time it shows him in the show, he is super crazy and it feels like he is from some awesome action anime,
 Konata, our lovely otaku.
 Konata, our lovely otaku.
with him screaming all the time and doing crazy stuff.

Besides the characters, the art of the show was fantastic.  The characters are super cute or moe as some of you may call it.  Besides the characters, the environments where very well down.  It looks like they took and actual picture of a part of Japan and washed it out a little bit and threw it in the show.  I enjoyed the music of the show as well.  It might not be the greatest, but it was very simple and fit perfectly with the show.

Another great thing about the show is all the anime tie ins and game tie ins into the show.  The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is often refrenced through out the show.  From the music to cosplay, its in Lucky Star often.  There are other shows as well like Code Geass and Full Metal Panic.  There are game tie ins as well like Guile from Street Fighter makes an appearance as Konata is kicking his ass.  You also see a Nintendo DS thrown in the from time to time as well.

At the end of every episode we got a segment called Lucky Channel.  Lucky Channel was a fun part of the show as well.  The hosts are Akira Kogami and Minoru Shiraishi.  It starts simple like from fan letters to character introductions then it gets worse near and the show gets completely destroyed.  To go along with Lucky Channel are the endings while the credits rolled.  At first they were little segments of our four heroines singing songs at a karaoke bar, mainly Konata singing anime songs like Cha La Head Cha La, the opening to Dragon Ball Z.  Then during the second half of the show, we got live action endings which were random and awesome at the same time.  They were just so goofy and out of place, I loved it.

Now for a few minor gripes.  I felt the show was a little to fast pacing.  The show is mainly conversations between the school girls, but it seems like there were no brakes between them.  It's like "TALK TALK TALK TALK" (2 seconds later) "TALK TALK TALK TALK".  I first it was a little rough for me, but I gradually got used to the flow of the show.  Another small gripe is the comedy.  As a main part of the show, the comedy, sometimes I felt like its was lacking some times and got a little smirk one my face instead of laughing, which I should do during a comedy.

Meito, the crazy awesome store owner.  All store owners should be like him.
Meito, the crazy awesome store owner.  All store owners should be like him.
Lucky Star is a fantastic show.  With the small gripes I had, I still had a blast with the show.  This is the kind of show that you watch when you don't feel like memorizing some cray plot about some dude trying to take over the world. It's just a fun a simple yet random show.  If you want to watch something that's goofy and really random, give this a show a go!  If you aren't a fan of comedy shows that are really random, you may want to stay away from this show.

My Score - 4.5/5

Blog Thing

I guess this is going to be a short one this time.

Next show I'm checking out WILL be Karin.  I've been putting it off, but now I will check it out.  After that I have no idea what I will watch.  You guys have any comedy/romance/slice of life shows you would like to recommend me?  I'm still strolling along with the Negima! manga.  I'm currently on chapter 180.

Video game front, nothing new really.  I'm kinda playing Titan Quest still.  Haven't been in the mood lately to play it.  It was like crack for a couple of days, but that didn't last very long.  Still playing SFIV as usual.  I've also been playing a lot of MAME (arcade emulator) lately.  Played through Michael Jackson's Moonwalker and Final Fight the other day.  I've also been playing around with Street FIgher II: Rainbow Edition, a hack for SFII: Champion Edition.  It's basically SFII: Champion Edition on crack.  You get to do air fireballs, change characters when ever you want, homing fireballs, full screen hurricane kicks.  It's just plain fun.

This is Jordan and I'm signing out.

EDIT:  OK, I'm having a slight problem right now.  As I mentioned in the blog right up this edit, I said I was going to watch Karin.  Well, I think I changed my mind.  While doing some research about the series, I seen that manga is only 58 chapters so instead of watching the anime, I might end up just reading the manga instead.  It would be faster to read the manga instead, which I heard is a lot darker and better then the anime.  I guess that's a first for me, manga first.  Haha.

So now, I need something new to watch.  Anyone have any good suggestions for slice of lice or comedy shows I could check out?  I've really been into slice of life shows and comedy shows lately and I have been enjoying them a ton.  I'll do some looking around tonight and hopefully something catches my eye.

 Azumanga Daioh
 Azumanga Daioh
Azumanga Daioh is an anime adaption of the manga of the same name.  There are 26 episodes, animated by J.C. Shaft, and directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori.  Azumanga Daioh is a high school/slice of life/comedy show.

Brief Overview

Azumanga Daioh is a show about six high school girls and two high school teachers during the course of three years.  There isn't much of a story since the anime is an adaptation of a 4-panel comic manga.  So instead,  here are six girls and two teachers in the show briefly explained:

Students:
Chiyo - A child prodigy who is only 10 years old who and SUPER CUTE!
Sakaki - A shy girl who loves cute things and animals even though that hater her. She's also very athletic as well even though she isn't in sports.
Ayumu aka Osaka - A airhead who things of strange things all the time.
Koyomi aka Yomi - The only normal person out of the group.
Tomo - A super hyper active girl who isn't that bright.
Kagura - An athletic girl

Teachers:
Yukari - An easy going and lazy English Teacher.
Minamo aka Nyamo - A gym teacher and a childhood friend of Yukari.

There are two side character as well that have big parts:  Kimura, a dirty old man who became a teacher for his lover for school girls, and Kaori, Sakaki's #1 fan.

My Thoughts

One word: Superb.

Since I'm a big fan of slice of life/comedy shows I had to check this one out and I'm glad I did.  Everything about the show is superb.  All the characters where superb.  Chiyo is so cute that you just want to hug her forever.  Sakaki is the kind of person you just want to talk to about cute things.  Ayumu is the biggest and best air head I have ever seen.  Koyomi is so normal that it makes you think how she hangs out with these people.  Tomo is super duper crazy and you just want to challenge her to anything whether it be a race or an arm wrestling contest.  Kagura is the kinda of person you just want to do any kinda of sports with.  Let's not forget about Kimura.  Because of him I want to become a teach now.  Nah, I'm kidding, he is just a goofy old fart who makes you laugh every time you see the guy.
 CHIYO IS SO CUTE!
 CHIYO IS SO CUTE!

Besides the character lets not forget the other part of the show, the comedy.  The comedy is top notch as well.  There lot's of memorable moments through out the show like this:

I could make this review full of funny clips, but that should be good.

With it's superb cast and odd ball humor, this is a must watch for any one.

My Scrore - 5 out of 5
(If the user review score could go higher then five I would give it a higher score, but I can't.)

IT'S TIME FOR THE ALMIGHTY BLOG THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With Azumanga Daioh out of the way (I will miss it  :-[  ), I decided to check out Karin.  It looks like a fun show.  School girl vampires, blood, comedy, school?  What else do you want?  I'm still reading Negima as well.  I'm now on chapter 163 so about 100 more chapters and I'm caught up to where the manga is right now.

On the video game front I found my new crack and it's called Titan Quest.  Titan Quest is basically Diablo with Greek mythology and it's an awesome game.  I picked the game up for a whole $3475348907534890759034850348589034.  Kidding.  I got Titan Quest: Gold Edition (regular game + expansion pack) for a whopping $5 from a Steam sale.  Steam, you love you oh so very much.

I also have a request.  I'm running out of shows to watch so please recommend me some.  The shows that I love the most are slice of life, comedies, and romance shows especially when all three of those are used together. (Ex:  Toradora and My Bride is a Mermaid)

One more thing, say happy birthday to my dad.  Crap, I forgot how old he is......

EDIT:  Now I'm thinking of checking out Lucky Star instead or Karin.  I watched like the first 2 episodes or so last year and I couldn't get into, but I want to try it again.  I always hear great things about the show so I really want to watch it.  Maybe the show gets better starting at episode 5 when the new director of the show came in.

Should I give this one a 2nd chance or stick with Karin?

I really enjoy them.  Sure most of the are the same, but that lovey dovey side to them is just to cute to pass on.

Some Tsunderes I love:

Kaze no Stigma
Kaze no Stigma
Kaze no Stigma is an anime adaptation of the light novel series of the same name.  The show was produced by Gonzo and directed by Junichi Sakata.  There are 24 episodes in the series.  Kaze no Stigma is a supernatural action show with some comedy and romance as well.

Brief Overview

Ayano Kannagi is the heir to the house of Kannagi who are all users of fire, except for her cousin, Kazuma Kannagi. Ayano and Kazuma had a battle with each other as children, and Ayano easily beat Kazuma.  After Kazuma was defeated by Ayano, Kazuma's father banished him from the Kannagi family in disgrace to losing to Ayano. Kazuma then ran off and changed his surname to Yagami, making him Kazuma Yagami.  After not being able to use fire magic, he formed a contract with the spirit of wind and becomes a powerful wind user.  After four long years, Kazuma has returned.

My Thoughts

Kaze no Stigma was a soild show.  The story wasn't terrible, but it was solid.  The action  was pretty good.  In some spots it seemed like the animation was a little iffy in terms of animation and some recycled parts ike when Ayano summons her sword.  The animation was used almost every time she summoned her sword.  Besides that, the comedy wasn't to bad either.    While the main emphasis of the show was action, when the comedy was used, I thought it was good. There is even some fanservice thrown in there from time to time, mainly showing Ayano's panties.
 Kazuma Yagami
 Kazuma Yagami

The characters were enjoyable.  Kazuma was a hard ass that no one could beat.  He did seem a little overpowered.  With all the fights he is in, he always wins easily without a sweat it seems like.  Ren Kannagi (Kazuma's little brother) was not to bad as well.  At first he starts out as a cry baby, but you see the badass in him as the show goes along.  Ayano is arrogant girl and does thing on her own, but she has a soft side as well.  The one character the was kinda annoying was Katherin McDonald.  Like all rich girls in anime, she has the stupid "HAHAHAHA" annoying high pitch laugh.

One thing is was kinda disappointed about was the dark tone of the light novels wasn't here.  Before I started watching the show I looked up some info about this series.  I was reading about the dark tone of the light novel series, which really isn't here in the anime till the last 6 episodes or so of the show.

With some iffy spots in the animation, a story that wasn't the strongest but not terrible, and missing dark tone for the light novels, the show was good overall.  If you are looking for a new actoin show to watch, check this out, it's pretty good.

Blog Thing

With Kaze no Stigma out of the way, I think I'm going to check out Azumanga Daioh next, unless I find another show that catches my eye.  I've heard great things about it being a fantastic comedy show and one of the best comedy anime shows around.  I really don't want to watch anything super long at the moment so I'm kinda going slow on my anime watching right now.  I still watch it ever night, but I haven't been doing mad marathons like I used to.  Mainly just bee watching 4 to 6 episodes a day.  I'm still reading Negima, which is awesome.  I'm on chapter 93 right now and I can't wait to read more.

On the video game front I've been slowing playing Zelda: Spirit Tracks while playing Street Fighter IV still.  I still haven't pick up No More Heroes 2 yet, but I still want to get it.

I guess this is the end now.  See you guys on the forum!
