Just Manga » Spin Manga Spin!

Today I was looking over Rightstuf.com and I noticed they have all the ‘ Evangelion, Neon Genesis: Shinji Ikari Raising Project’ for sell (6.69$) and next to it there is ANOTHER SPIN OFF MANGA ( Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse) I know at this point Evangelion can s**t in a box and sell it and people (including me) will buy it, but this is getting stupid. Evangelion, in the manga world, has been meteoric in its decent in quality after the main story. So I ask you this, what manga spin-off do you like? Personally, im a love almost everything Tenchi and I like most off the spin-off mangas (yes, even the ones without Tenchi)

@PenguinDust said:

 But, there is one persistent gag I just don't get and that's when one girl grabs another who is clearly well endowed and manipulates her chest much to the other's blushing protest.  Does this happen even a reasonable amount in Japan, because no woman I've ever spoken with has ever confirmed such behavior.  I can only assume it is something like the lingerie-clad pillow/tickle fights most men imagine go on inside sororities and slumber parties.  "

We can only dream *lost in thought*

Anyway, just this week I watched/rewatched 3 shows that made the flat chest job

-Lucky star, kannagi, azumanga daioh

Lucky Star makes that joke almost every episode when the younger crew showed up.   *rolls eyes*

General Discussion » Figuring out figures

@ShadowKnight508:

That is the talk that scares me when I try to buy figures online (I have no idea what they mean by PVC or the scale of a figure T_T ) Also isn’t there fakes figures to? I was looking for a Haibane Renmei figure and I found a PVC that looks fake. Is there fake figure out there? And how would I know how big it is? Also I was looking for a Black Rock Shooter figure but the prices ranged from 20$ - 500+, WHY? Is it just more demand for a BRS figure with the gun?

@Gaff:

From what people tell me kits are hard (or that’s what I read in ‘i otaku- struggle in akihabara’) So I don’t think I willing to pay money for me to mess it up.

General Discussion » Are you type A or B

So i was over at Japanator looking for something new and they posted a
part of article that talked about there being 2 types of otaku.

http://www.japanator.com/what-kind-of-otaku-are-you--13120.phtml

i believe if i had to pick i would be a type A otaku by there standards
(it even says they like Lain and Ghost in the Shell so thats me)

But my question is "if you had to pick what type are you?".

@organicalistic_:

  Ya, im more of a A-B kind of guy. Anyway on average Japanese women do not have very large breast, its more due to they’re average height and weight. That is more of what I was getting at.

General Discussion » Figuring out figures

Last year I bought my 1 figure from a convention (Oni-con 09’) and ever since then I have been researching the anime figure subculture (that would make a subculture in a subculture) and the only thing I learned is there is A LOT of figure out there. I need help, I can’t figure out what types of figures are right for me. I don’t know what type of figures are cheap and good for display or is it better just to buy the ones you put together. Is it bad to display characters from different shows together and what the best way of displaying? (I have a Rei sitting in a cockpit sitting on top of my computer but if I start getting more I going to need to figure out how to display them without them getting messed up)

All and all I need help; I don’t know the 1 thing about figures.

Off-Topic » Most annoying reoccurring jokes in anime

I have been watching anime since I was a kid (starting with Thunder Cats, G-Force, Ultra Man etc) and over the years I have ran into the SAME JOKES over and over again. I love anime but sometimes it just hurts my soul to hear “you’re short” or “you’re flat chested” (I never understood the flat chested joke, aren’t most Asian chicks… you know… flat)

Anyway, my question for today/night is “what joke are you sick of hearing in anime?”

I really like that line from Cowboy Bebop ep: Ballad of Fallen Angels

Vicious : When angels are forced out of heaven, they become devils. You agree, don't you agree Spike?

Spike : I'm just watching a bad dream that I can't wake up from.

General Discussion » What Western Franchises / Properties Would You Turn into Anime?

That’s a hard question because most Tv in America is based off or outright remake of another show in another country. Let me think… I don’t watch cartoons anymore, other than the Simpsons and Family guy, and those will not translate to anime very well. And the other shows I watch are House, My name is Earl and No Reservations, and those would make for a bad anime. Honestly the only thing I can think of that would make a good anime is Scott Pilgrim but that doesn’t really count because the writer was inspired by anime in the 1st place.

General Discussion » Female perspective on fan service

LOL Man service, I have never heard that before. Being a straight male I don’t even know what women would call man-service. I’m guessing shirtless guys or bishonen dudes but what would compare to the generic panty flash (balls flashing would just be wrong) Im not even going to act like I know what women want (you can ask my ex girlfriends that) Also I have always questioned “what is the appeal of yaoi?” I always thought it was the fact that the men act or feminine was the appeal.

I read your blog on the matter of fan-service and I understand how you feel. Now-a-days they are trying too hard to appeal to the male otaku (in Japan) that they are alienating the female fans. Take a look at any figure sold, any popular show and any top selling product on J-List, it’s all hyper focused on male otaku and that is wrong. At the turn of the century female otaku make up also half of the market (just go to any convention and you can see that) but for some reason they are not trying to capitalize on this (other than by selling more chibi character cellphone straps and yaoi) maybe it’s because the Japanese market is always 2 years behind what the smart thing should be.

O! And my last question before I forget, how do women feel about the whole loli thing and anime? Is it something that they look at as “weird anime creepy stuff for pedos” or “whatever its anime”. (when it comes to anime I just take a lot of the weird stuff as “whatever that’s just anime for you” and don’t think much about it)

General Discussion » Female perspective on fan service

Being a big fan of all things Tenchi and other harem anime I have always questioned “what do women think about the male idea of fan service”. Seeing that there is a increasing amount of moe shows and fan service shows in the last 2 years (ie: ikki tousen getting a 3rd season, High school of the dead, strike witches season 2, etc) I just wanted to know what do women feel about fan service? Is it something that will make you stop watching a show? Or do they just ignore it like I ignore female fan service shows like Ouran high school host club. Or is it more a sense of “whatever men are weird”. This has been something that is on my mind for years. What’s the point in shows like High School of the Dead if you don’t like breast? Or what’s the point in a panty flash if you wear panties? I mean if you take out the debate between your friends about who is hotter Ryoko or Ayeka, (Ryoko FTW) what’s really left in a harem show?

Just Manga » Saving Space By Going Digital

@Kelleth said:

"Well i for one never want to go digital, i just love paper to much ^^ "

Years ago I was that “that guy” that said “I love the feel of paper and having the physical copy to keep forever” but after having piles of manga that you know you are not going to get around to reading again, I need to go digital. During this year I have been flying a lot more and taking 5 books in my carry on and finishing them before we land isn’t fun.

Just Manga » Saving Space By Going Digital

So today I said to myself “wow! I have a lot of manga and its taking up to much space. I wonder if I should get a Kindle and start a digital collection?” So I went to Amazon and looked at the manga selection and everything was yaoi, hentai and how to draw manga. If you go to any bookstore they will tell you that “those are the best selling things in the manga section” but come on the Kindle is all digital. They can put anything new and old on the store and if it sells at all then they make a higher profit then selling the actual book. Heck, lasts years profit margin covers the sells of anything that doesn’t sell.

Anyway, the real question of the day is “is it wise to spend 120$ on a Kindle just to buy 6$ manga?” Im really starting to run out of space for manga and I hate having to pack a large box just for my books everything I move. ( I had to pack 4 times last year T_T )

General Discussion » Could we really make a Gundam?

I can’t remember how the 1 Gundam show explained it but I believe gundams came about after jamming systems made it imposable to launch smart bombs, so all combat was close quarters. But I think with the entire anti tank and missile tech we have it could survive modern combat (ie: look at Metal Gear Rex. With a system that large it can house enough anti missile and long range artillery it can fend off most attackers)

Just Manga » Manga collecting preferences

Honestly I’m trying to move away from paper manga. Years ago I loved having the actual book in my hands and on my shelf… until I started moving from place to place. In the last year I had to move about 4 times and my manga takes up a large box and a lot of space, it was cool when I lived in a house or even a apartment but now I have to stack them in a corner until I can figure out what to do with them T_T. I was looking into getting a Kindle but all they have is yaoi and hentai. Also I don’t like how a lot of manga now-a-days is in different sizes ie: Dog: bullets and carnage is larger than Mega Tokyo and omni-bust save me money but look weird.

Just Manga » what manga has your favorite art

I have to go with Dogs: Bullets and Carnage vol. 3. But the art in this manga is amazing, with detailed drawings of city landscape, clothes and fight scenes. But in this volume during a flashback they had the bloodiest depiction of a girl ripped to pieces I have ever seen (it was so bad I good sick) but the art was so good I can never forget it. Good job Shirow Miwa!

General Discussion » TOP 3 BEST ANIMES (I have watched)

I always make it a rule not to jump in a “top *blank*” but this one makes we wonder about the newer generation of anime fans. What was the big deal with Death Note? I watched the anime and the live action but it didn’t wow me. I even took my non-otaku friends to watch the live action movie and they loved it. I don’t get it, maybe I watched too much anime or maybe it was the characters or maybe it was just the theme but it was only a ok show to me, maybe in my top 50 (but like I said I don’t make lists)
