General Discussion » your favorite anime character

It really depends. If you were to ask me my favorite character for just military and piloting ass-kickery, well, my name should tell you that. If you were to ask which character is my favorite from the aspect of who I found most attractive I'd say Rin Tohsaka. But if you were to ask me which character I like the most that has a mix of both, I'd probably say Ryougi Shiki.
Thats her "You have no idea what youre getting into by hanging around me, do you?" face

Any character that could take on a mobile suit with just a knife is certifiably badass to me, especially when they're as mortal as the rest of us.

General Discussion » Which anime movies would you recommend to Jesus?

The Kara no Kyoukai series. The mystery aspects are entertaining, but I'm sure he could relate very well to Mikiya Kokutou, especially if you look at Ryougi Shiki as a representation of the human race.

Just Anime » Alright, I need some help

If you like Cowboy Bebop because of the action, then Black Lagoon is a very safe bet. Two of my roommates who don't even like anime enjoyed watching it because of it's mix of crazy antics yet serious and engaging setting.

In the meantime I just gave up and sorted each of the 200+ images into galleries named for each episode...

Bug Reporting » Episode Screencaps make the page LOOOONG

Try looking at the screenshots from the episode on the sidebar on this page to understand what I mean: http://www.animevice.com/the-gundam-deathscythe/12-111367/

And it's not just on that specific episode page either.
I'm using Windows XP SP3 in both Firefox 3 and Google Chrome. Basically what I'm seeing is every single screenshot having it's own box and information on the sidebar. This is a problem because of the number of screencaps many episodes have ends up making for a very tiny scrollbar, and I'd imagine longer webpage loadtimes too.

UPDATE: I also realized just now after finishing 3 more episodes worth of screencaps that there's now no longer a way to add screencaps to just one particular episode anymore.... if there is, can someone tell me exactly how to do it?

That's where I get most of mine, and they tend to be of very high quality (registration is free of course).

I change mine fairly often so here's the past four I've used and my current one:

Current one:

The originals I have are all at 1680x1050, except the Mio one which is stretched from 1600x1200.

General Discussion » Happy Birthday Gundam!

Man.... if only Sunrise still had the drive and coolness and style they had during the 15th anniversary. We got a lot of good solid Gundam series from around then: G, Wing, X, and even 08th MS Team. Granted, we got G Saviour too, but hey, that's still FOUR new series that just about every Gundam fan will agree to liking at least one or two of them. The only good ones as of late have been extremely short OVAs...

And to Mr. Yoshiyuki Tomino, I believe I speak for everyone when I say we raise our glasses to you!

Just Anime » new to anime...

It depends on your objective and the kind of person you're catering to.
If the person you're looking at just likes ridiculous fun with action, Gurren Lagann has yet to disappoint any of my non-anime friends that I've shown it to. If the person you're looking at likes over-the-top comedy, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is ridiculous fun everyone can understand. Zetsubou sensei doesn't work well for this category obviously because of it's heavy reliance on Japanese culture knowledge. If they want a thinking show, give them GITS if they like technical, or give them Kara no Kyoukai if they like mystical/philosophical. All I know that you should NOT start people off with is anything that falls under slice of life, like Azumanga, Lucky Star, or Haruhi. Yes, even Haruhi. Get them into those AFTER they have a bit more taste into the medium.

Sadly, I can't recommend Gundam Wing unless they were of the generation that caught little bits of it on Cartoon Network, since most people seemed to be turned off by old-school cel animation unless it's of a higher tier. And for the love of god and all that is holy, DON'T start them on Gundam 00 or Gundam Seed. I swear I will track you down if you do....those shows are horrid for getting a person into the mecha genre for many reasons on top of the fact that they don't really illustrate the normally clear line between super robot and real robot very well at all. Either go full out super robot with something like....idk....Gravion? (I'm not too knowledgeable on newer super robot shows, sorry) or go full out real robot with something like 08th MS Team or Full Metal Panic.

Normally though I wouldn't recommend starting them out on a giant robot show anyway, unless they've shown interest in the genre already.

Off-Topic » K-ON guitar looks like mine. (Kinda)

I stand corrected, I think Yuki uses a white version similar to this: http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/Robot-SG-Special.aspx
Probably a Gibson LTD SG Classic in white, which was offered only in Japan.

I haven't looked up the ones in K-ON! yet, but I know that Yuki Nagato used a special edition white fender and Haruhi used an Italia Mondial 2.

General Discussion » Otaku Fetishism

In relation to the question of whether people are attracted to anime as a result of fetishes or the other way around, I believe that the case tends to be primarily that anime stands as an independent variable, and that fetish attachments sometimes result from heavy exposure to anime - not the other way around.

When comparing the demograph of preferential tastes between the non-fetish affected peoples (whether they be just normal people or anime fans) and those that are (more commonly hardcore fans), there is an apparent shift in taste over time. Normal males for example may prefer large breasts or rears (I don't understand the whole large butt thing personally...) and/or an overall cute composure. My personal theory in what influences the shift is anime's tendency (especially in visual novles) to coincide many of these afformentioned tastes with certain traits, such for an example, the playful tomboy characters being large breasted. In many cases, shifts can be Pavlovian; for example, many times the most popular female characters that wear short skirts and look good in them may wear very high socks as well. Eventually the combination of the two develops into a taste for Zettai Ryouiki. Another example may be found with the nekomimi phenomena. Starting once again with "normal" tastes being enhanced in particular instances with the addition of cat ears for cuteness, or tight fur clothing with skin exposure, eventually the traits themselves may evolve into being of their own nomenclature.

Although this does not explain all fetishes, it does explain a good portion of them. Many others (as the article you linked to Gia) are most likely a result of strange sexual tastes coming to surface, and my assumption is the exposure to it through many parts of Japanese culture (since exposure to it is far more prominent there than in the US) is the primary cause of it's association to anime fans. Sort of like how the word 'otaku' in Japan can mean a fan of all sorts of things, yet over here it tends to just mean anime fan. That said, I cannot explain what about these kinds of fetishes makes them spread. The allure of bondage comes from the implementer having a feeling of power over their victim and doing whatever they want to them, which in its most fundamental form (greed, power, and lust combined) is really not all that strange. The method of presentation may seem strange though at first glance, so that's why it tends to be dismissed as a fetish. Tentacles are a combination of an extension of bondage and also creative legal dodging, where since in Japan certain body parts cannot be shown uncensored even in porn sometimes (I have no clue what the exact rules are on it), artists would use tentacles to represent basically the same thing and get around the censorship issue as a sort of legal loophole.

As for the concept of lolicon.....honestly I really don't fully understand it. I suppose perhaps it could be for some of the same reasons as bondage, but at the same time the whole "innocence" aspect that many of them seem to talk about doesn't compute into any of the theories I can think of, unless it were some insanely far off evolution of having a taste for cute, but I really don't think that's the case.

(I hope I'm not too late posting this...am I?)

Would a triple solid oxide fuel cell powered bipedal weapons platform with a 900 MW power output, 7000 rounds per minute 150mm gattling cannon, and 24 AMRAAM missile pods estimated to a total cost of around 1.2 Billion USD be covered under "anything"?

Sorry Flyvapnet, I can agree with you on Yoko and a few of those you mentioned, but Orihime is completely useless to me. She almost fits the textbook definition of cardboard cutout female character.
