It seems the Twiter link on profiles isn't working. The same Tweet I made weeks ago is still on here.

General Discussion » (Kinda) New to Anime: Looking for shows

  • FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD - Though this is the second anime series, it's actually more accurate to the manga it's based upon. I believe you can still watch the entire series on HULU or FUnimation's You Tube channel.
  • EVANGELION 1.11 - This is a really great movie that is part of a re-imagination of the original anime series. It's going to be a four part movie series, and the first two are available in English.
  • SUMMER WARS - Another anime movie, but it's also just a great movie, period.
  • SOUL EATER - A good shonen action series with an interesting cast.
  • MY BRIDE IS A MERMAID - A silly and fun romantic comedy.
  • BLACK LAGOON - This is just a great anime series if you like wild gun action. I think both seasons are on HULU.
  • PERSONA 4 THE ANIMATION - An anime adaptation of the PERSONA 4 video game story. I believe it's still on HULU.

There are also reviews for anime series posted in the news section frequently.

General Discussion » Vice Pit Question Thread

Seeing how Anime Vice has a rather expansive wiki database. is there any page on the site that you've particularly enjoyed or thought helpful? Also, is there any page of the site that you wish had more work done to it?

With you enjoying ONE PIECE recently, have you thought about checking out the manga and seeing how that is paced in comparison to the anime? The series in the US is about a year behind where it in in Japan. Where Tom jumped on with the more recent episodes of the anime is Volume 65.

General Discussion » Magazine Subscription Query

@dinevalesco:

Well, I know there is OTAKU magazine that is an English publication that talks about news related to more anime. Basically, reading English news about manga and anime is often grossly outdated. You'd be better off spending that money on some Amazon gift cards so she could buy herself all the manga she wants.

There is the VIZ Media edition of the mangazine SHONEN JUMP, but these are often edited editions. Not really worth buying.

If she likes manga, I would suggest looking into some online manga publication. Yen Press has their YEN+ and VIZ has the SHONEN JUMP ALPHA. SJA is a website that posts translated versions of several manga series fresh form being published in Japan.

General Discussion » A good post-300 starting point for One Piece

@sickVisionz:

The HULU episodes are nearing the end of the Water Seven Arc that leads directly into Enies Lobby Arc. The Dawn Island Arc episodes are all up.

General Discussion » A good post-300 starting point for One Piece

@sickVisionz:

I just remembered that part way through the Enies Lobby arc. There is not just the back story of Nico Robin in detail (Ep. 275-278), but there are several filler episodes that are directly dedicated to the back stories of each of the Straw Hat members (Ep. 279-.283). Franky's back story was told in Ep. 248-250. Brook's story was told in the later Thriller Bark arc in Ep. 378-380.

The end of the Dawn Island arc also recaps these events very briefly, then you could jump right into the time skip.

You can also check out the ONE PIECE 101 videos that FUNimation has been posting on YouTube. These are overly broad and removes much of the depth, but still has the basics of most of the crew, so far.

@ShadowKnight508: Yeah, but you're going to be getting flashbacks in the mini arcs after the screw is split up in the post Sabaody Archipelago events. The crew's history is pretty much summed up in all the episodes at the end of the Dawn Island Arc before the time skip.

General Discussion » A good post-300 starting point for One Piece

It's a bit hard to say, but post 300 is just about the time of the Enies Lobby Arc. That had some awesome battles, especially Luffy vs Rob Lucci. There is the last big filler arc after that. Thriller Bark was fun and hilarious with some awesome battles. That's when Brook joins in. Sabaody Archipelago would probably be great. That has one of the biggest plot reveals and it's a relatively short arc. Most of that arc's episodes are avaliable on HULU.

If you just look on the One Piece anime page. I label the various arcs by with what episodes they start and end at. That may make it easier to know where to start.

General Discussion » Vice Pit Question Thread

  • When you consider that the line between comics and manga is extremely thin, why is it that so many comic fanatics are so dismissive if not venomous against manga in general? I read both, and I find a lot of the complaints comic readers have about comics (i.e. continuity, deaths that are reversed in months, and reboots) can be answered in various manga series. Some try to point to fan service, but how is that any different than all the impossibly busty Marvel and DC heroine and villainess characters in skintight or barely there costumes with spiked heels? Others say that the series are too large to get into. However, there are always jumping on points, and you're going to have that same problem with any long running comic series. If anything, I think it's easier to find back issues of manga volumes than it is comic trades. I often have a hard time finding trades from comics released a year ago.

General Discussion » I'm looking for an anime to introduce my friend to the culture...

If you're going with Fullmetal Alchemist. Go with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, that's closer to the manga canon than the first anime. Soul Eater is a great series. Persona 4, which can be found on HULU for free.

Black Lagoon and Death Note are more mature, but very good series.Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are also great action series.

Editing & Tools » Episode Page Template: Feedback Wanted!

@finaldasa:

I started the "Points of Interest" thing because I thought "Trivia" is overused. I just use that to point out little details about the episode that are interesting. That's where I always touch on any of the manga to anime differences.

@Daniel_Newton:

I'm quite happy with the format I've been using. With long running series like ONE PIECE and NARUTO, I like to begin the page with the name of the story arc. I add (Filler) in case the episode is non-canon events. This is an example on ONE PIECE Ep. 517. That is the official summary from FUNimation. It just needs to be put in quotes.

I've actually been putting Opening & Ending Themes together instead of putting Ending Theme after the synopsis. There's really no reason for separating them.

I don't see a reason to have a preview of next week when these pages are previews in themselves. If people want a preview for the next episode, they go to the next episode page.

I've been using those DELETE pages for making new series in place of starting some pages from scratch.

Off-Topic » is it me or anime is losing popularity?

TV in general has become less popular. People prefer watching shows online where you can pause or watch on portable devices. There are a lot of popular online streaming websites that allow people to watch series fresh out of Japan.

General Discussion » Future of AnimeVice (Screened Fate is decided)

@sickVisionz: @Daniel_Newton:

We are seeing the downside of creating sites based on the personalities. When all the original personalities are gone, you lose what attached people to the site.

I think they made a big mistake over on Screened. They should of introduced the new guys while Rorie was still there. By Rorie leaving then introducing new people. They are basically playing the role of step-parents to a bunch of ticked off users. A lot of people left and don't want to give the new people a chance, because they were invested emotionally with the staff they knew. There is no attachment to these new people.

Having Rorie there while the new writers were getting known, the users would have been much more open to give the new people a chance. Then once they got to know them there would be a chance for Rorie to leave will less stress.

@takashichea said:

It's probably the same when Gia and John left Anime Vice. (I was not an Anime Vice user back then) The site personalities are like the keystones in the communities.

The thing about this is that when those two were gone, users such as myself and Sora started submitting articles of our own. I had been submitting articles even while Gia and John were still here, and Sora was the one who revived the Quick Picks segment in article form. Then other mods and a few users joined in. Tom followed soon after. Me and the mods submitting articles were know well by the user base. They didn't kick out Gia and John and get replaced by a much of people who no one knew.

I know I wouldn't be happy at all to not be able to submit anymore news or editorials. I really enjoy doing that. I'd be doing it more if I could.

Off-Topic » Who Do You Love, Right Now?!

Seeing how so many other forums and websites get filled with nothing but snark and anger. I thought February would be a good opportunity to prove that the forums in the Whiskey brands were made of better stuff and people. This is sort of inspired by the "Whats Going Through Your Mind Right Now" forum. This forum is dedicated for nothing but declaring your love for all the things you appreciate or generally care for.

RULES:

  • When ever love fills your heart for anything or anyone. Post a comment on this forum to let other users know. Even if you just had a really good ham sandwich. If it makes you happy, share it.
  • No negative comments. This is a forum about love.
  • Every post must begin with either "I love" or "I like". You're free to wax poetic from there on.
  • Post as many times as you like. We can never have enough love.

I'll start things off -- in no particular order

I love my books, I love cooking for my family on the holidays, I love the Whiskey Media sites, I love orange juice with pretzels, I love my mom, I love history, I love the Kindle Fire I got for Christmas and the digital comics I can buy, I love all the manga I recently bought, and I love all the people who post in this forum!!!

Now, it's your turn!! Who or what do you love, right now?
