Well Hello again vice, with Future diary in the bag it looks like it’s time to return to the Carnival after my short break, this entry into the circus of despair that is Deadman Wonderland with Volume 6, following the somewhere awful arch of the undertakers I’m interested to see the direction of Volume 6.
Following the Scar Chain break out Ganta has found solace in his friends and fellow Deadmen, however as the world outside hears about the Deadmen and the secrets of Deadman Wonderland what should have been rage at the misdeeds of Wonderland and the promoter turns to hate and fear of the Deadmen, finally settling on twisted excitement at watching a brand new open to the public carnival corpse featuring an all new threat, Forgeries, artificial Deadmen.
The Manga itself feels more like return to the interesting focus of the series, eyes on characters like the Crow and Shiro as opposed to the Undertaker crew which luckily is no longer involved in the series. Instead we have the reintroduction to Azami and Mockingbird in more prevalent ways. Also finally doing more with Shiro is a pleasant surprise. All in all this return to the old is feeling a lot more pleasant If not really turning things around completely, good action combined with this makes this feel like a far better Deadman wonderland.
The Negative, well all real negatives I might have had they have all been drowned out by the god awful nonsense that is the end of this Volume. I give a lot of breathing room in terms of stupidity I’m willing to accept in service to the plot, but to watch someone make a completely nonsensical out of character stupid decision for the point of making things bleak, because well, f@#k you, that’s why; It simply just so outrageously poor “twist” of an ending for this volume. Just such a terrible mistake. I was yelling “why” as loud as I could at the page in anger. The simple issue is not that it’s bad, but that it’s bad in a way that makes no sense. (I’ve read on to discover there is a reason for what happened but in terms of rationality it’s about as practical as breaking your hand with a hammer to insure you don’t scratch a wound.)
All in all it is a better volume then the last and is good, but it’s just ends with such a sour note it kicks it back down from Deadmans average score of pretty damn good. This next ride in Wonderland was better, but it’s still only 3.5 Shitty decisions out of 5, still good, but not as good as Deadman can be. For whats its worth though I am engaged in what their going to do next, which I failed to be throughout the undertakers arch.
