A mixed bag of a gory sword-action title.

Here was a series I wasn't sure what to make heads or tails out of with my enjoyment. Shigurui goes for a feudal era setting in exploring the events that lead up to the upcoming fight seen at the start of the series between Seigen and Gennosuke. This series goes ...

A confusing and mixed package of an anime coming off Noitamina.

Oy voy, this series was unsure what to make of itself. At first glance, I thought the show was gonna try making itself into a walking homage to Ghibli titles considering the nods to Nausicaa and Laputa in the show's first episode with the opening music and Phyrne's air chase ...

A mixed bag of a post-apocalyptic anime drama.

Gilgamesh proved to be quite the mixed bag of a title with its fair share of both positives and negatives that stuck out for me with its plot setup of the conflict between factions over the fate of humanity. The show gives off enough of a gloomy mood with the ...

Evolution-R is a big improvement over Revolution.

Slayers Evolution-R is a definite improvement over Revolution. Continuing where the last season left off, Lina and her group are in search of the Hellmaster's Jar. The first four episodes start off as some comical filler where the group is accompanied by an animated suit of armor called Nama, who ...

Despite some major issues, Claymore's a decent dark drama.

This anime was reminding me in some ways of Berserk in the fact both explore a dark medieval world full of corruption, suffering and enough demons wrecking havoc with an anti-hero/ anti-heroine out for revenge against someone from their past while slaughtering said demons. Both also have a nice amount ...

More focus on the pairing in this season of Spice and Wolf.

The first season of Spice and Wolf was one of the few 2008 anime titles that I enjoyed. So seeing the second season to this series was an obvious choice for me this year and just like the previous season, Spice and Wolf II was definitely on my list of ...

Mercantilism and a wolf girl create something original.

With many of the newest titles from Japan I've come across, there have been dating sim spinoffs, series sequels, shows milking off the moe craze, or titles that reuse plot elements commonplace in its specific genre. Here in Spice and Wolf, there's a focus on medieval times with a mixed ...

Decent anthology of animated shorts if you're a Matrix fan.

The Animatrix is a series of nine animated shorts focused around settings and events influenced through the Wachowski Brothers's movie trilogy of The Matrix. Seeing as different animation studios did each of the animated shorts, it would be rather hard for me to rate the anthology as a whole. The ...

Oozes enough in style yet hardly has any substance.

Well, this is a rather interesting take on sci-fi and action. Granted, the whole 'revenge' storyline has been done to death in countless other action titles I've seen, both in anime and American live-action films. But, I'll give this movie credit for trying to offer something different with its action. ...

Looks like Slayers is starting to lose its luster for me.

It looks like Slayers is starting to lose a bit of its steam for me as I found both the comedy and plotting for it to be weaker than what I got out of the first three seasons. Much like Slayers Try, I found the show's humor to be hit ...

A fairly average romantic comedy for me.

I heard enough about this series being one of the original classic romantic comedies so I figured I would give the 2005 first TV season a try thanks to the Devil's Advocate Poll here on Anime Vice. To be perfectly honest, my thoughts of it are "meh" at most. The ...

Not perfect, but Gundam is a decent classic mecha anime!

I've been meaning to see this series for quite a while now considering many folks consider it one of the major mecha titles that brought about ongoing plot and character developments instead of a "monster of the day" approach. For the most part, Gundam does do a decent job at ...

A decent steampunk title, yet doesn't explore too deeply.

Last Exile makes unique use of a number of elements related to the genre of steampunk and 18 and 19 century lifestyles. Of course, some of you might be wondering what exactly I mean by steampunk. Steampunk is a genre that explores a future that could have been which features ...

Blends ballet and the darker side of fairy tales quite well.

Princess Tutu has an effective original premise in the blending of ballet and the dark side of fairy tales. Focused around Ahiru's struggles to get back the heart of Mythos as Princess Tutu while unaware of Drosselmeyer's manipulations, the mahou shoujo approach of Princess Tutu is quite different from other ...

Sometimes, dropping a series isn't the right choice.

I have to wonder why I was so jaded to have dropped this over a year ago. Seeing as I have been getting enough enjoyment out of Hourou Musuko, I decided to resume watch of Aoi Hana since Wandering Son was made by the same manga-ka. After completing the series ...
