and welcome to DREAMcast’s first Halloween instalment of The NIGHTMARECAST
Yes that’s right folks on this episode your host’s Donwun & The Old Boy wrestle with the interesting topic of your not so friendly protagonist THE ANTIHERO!
Now at first this might not seem like a particularly ghoulish topic for a Halloween podcast but when you come to think about it these so called dark hero’s have raised the bar in what people in general are used to seeing in terms of violence and horror. So to drive that point on in our conversation for once we here @ DC broaden our discussion into the wide world of Television and Film bringing up some the more recently enjoyed Antihero brands.
Things like Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Punisher, The BATMAN, movies where people are enjoying chaos, murder and horror: SAW, Piranna 3D, Nightmare on Elm Street…ya know the commonly know stuff
This leads me to ask the question what actually scares us nowadays in media.....in where we have a startling revelation about Katface(well, startling to me anyway)
Then once we get all that outta the way we get back to the Anime & Manga stuff in true Halloween fashion, which leads us onto what should be the epitamy of terror….DEMONS
DEVILMAN – a title me and katface have been looking forward to discussing on the podcast for a while now
We also discuss Demons in general and how in anime and manga they are pretty much seen as any other normal character…with no real emphasis on terror, hell or anything else you would think a demon would be about....more of a means to an end in terms of power and other exploitable traits....bah
Then we end with some nice Halloween recommendations
Oh did I not mention we are joined on this episode by an uninvited guest that has escaped from prison…..AGAIN!
And lastly here’s some are EXTRA LINKSrelated to some of the topics discussed on this episode
We change things up a little bit on this episode and steer off the usual review / single title analysis path and focus more on an open discussion episode instead.
The topic you ask………did you miss the headline above? jeez it’s….Anime & School life obsession……to be exact…what is it with anime and the school settings. Whether it’s used as a premise, a excuse, or just an idea…why is it so many anime / manga titles take place in schools.
Is it the about appealing to the masses…is it about the perfect place for unlimited fanservice hijinks, is it about setting easy story boundaries viewers can automatically understand or is it just the perfect theme that fans will never ever get tired of no matter how many times it is used
Well, to discuss the possibilities in greater detail I have kindly requested the help of two fellow Animephiles, Starting with a returning guest……the lovely Angel Otaku!
Next we have a new guest from the realms of AnimeVice and YouTube….Sotyfan16
Alrighty….this is quite the meaty podcast folks….and to delve more into the school theme topic we sift thru a bucket-load of quote-unquote “school themed” anime titles….from individual random picks to our best and worst’s
Here is just a few of the titles we discuss on this episode
B Gata H Kei: Yamada`s First Time, School Rumble, Green Green, Happy Lesson, Tenjou Tenge, I My Me Strawberry Eggs, Cat Planet Cuties, Clannad, Ouran High School Host Club, Golden Boy, Tora Dora, Maid-sama and a lot more
I also want to thank Sotyfan16 for pointing me in the direction of this excellent blog series written by AnimeVice user madpierrot who has had first-hand experience as a teacher in a Japanese school and has written a series of blogs pointing out the fiction in anime schools to the reality in real Japanese schools.
These blogs are fantastic and I highly recommend you read and share them with anybody you may find to have interest with such things
Anime Schools Fact or Fiction
Lastly I wanna thank my two gracious guest for joining me on this episode and remember folks you can find them on the following links
Angel Otaku on: Her Tumblr Website
Both of them are local members of planettyro.com for easy acces to our existing group members
Thanks for tuning in…..Cya on the next one…..PEACEOUT
As i recently mentioned on Tom Pinchuk's special review of One Piece episode 566. On behalf of Zenithwillrule of MediaMeltdown i will now share his ongoing look at the History of One Piece - A nice retrospect of one of the best anime series ever created......well in our own opinion's of course
Each episode is about 10 - 15 minutes and really does a great job of reminding fans / newcomers alike why this series is so popular
I will be posting these episodes together in their "groups" and not seperately as they are released (for the sake of streamlining)
At this point i just want to thank Zenithwillrule of MediaMeltdown for allowing me to share this across the interwebs and hope you guys enjoy these videos as much as i have.
THE GLORIOUS FIST OF THE NORTH STAR*
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the glorious Fist of the North Star Special
We are finally going to tackle one of Anime’s & Manga’s founding Shounen titles….something we have been looking forward to do for a long long time I might add :oP
The MANLIEST OF MANLY anime franchises is finally up on our chopping block to be discussed with by your Host ME: Donald Wunder and The Old B…….errr I can’t find Katface…..okay…then Geea…..fuck….he’s gone AWOL
So…..i’m going to have to talk about the manliest of anime with……Nu..Nuansay…a la..lady…really?
Why do the anime gods hate me so……..
Cough….i mean of course…of couse…we are going to get the very much appreciated female perspective on one of the goryiest…bloodiest….most violent shows…ever ..made……yeah……I don’t see why that wouldn’t make sense…..it’s all about equality after all…..right?
Nuansay: just hurry up and get on with it already….jeez i do have other things ta dew ya know!
ON THIS EPISODE…we go into depth on ALMOST ALL the various animated releases of FOTNS…and believe me folks there are quite a few out there.
We talk about the various fighting styles, characters, affect it had on shounen anime, other non anime and manga releases such as the video games and US live action movie (LMAO) and then we end on what we might want to see IF the franchise decided to continue somehow.
I’ve also written a supplementary FOTNS Anime BLOG which more or less goes over all the titles we discussed in this DC episode and I even include a recommended watching list for those who may be interested.
I hope ya enjoy the pressure points we be hitting on this episode…….if ya don’t then…well...guess what
Let me throw in some links related TO stuff we may have spoken about in this podcast…and some other goodies
SUPA CLASSIC FOTNS CLIPS (sooooo many more out there)
and finally never forget much like Kenshiro……………you have the touch
Continuing from our last podcast this is the Legend of Korra episode and as stated last time we will start things off with the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen’s discussion on Korra followed by our own.
Now to be honest with ya folks, our review on Korra is not the most positive one you’ll find out there….and it’s quite a LONG run-through. It surprised both myself and Nuansay that a show of only 12 episodes had so much elements to cipher through…..and OH BOY do we take it there.
Don’t worry LOK fanboy’s I already foresee the flame emails and comments which I welcome….well…to an extent
But just remember folks we can’t all be of the same mind….some people are gonna love stuff and some people are gonna be a bit more critical
And even though overall myself and Nuansay were extremely disappointed with LOK this podcast is not a flaming session and we do have quite a few positive things to say about the show….including some interesting production facts which may have been the source of our overall disappointment
I’ll add time codes for this episode…i'll bet some people will want them
LEOG’s Discussion on Korra: 00:01:07 - 00:21:07
Don & Nuansay’s LOK Review / Long Breakdown: 00:21:07 - 02:04:19
Final Thoughts on LOK & Production Issues: 02:04:20 - 02:26:44
Overall, I think Uberhikari did a much better job of pointing out alot of the things we felt where done badly in LOK......but now thats all over with me thinks that’s enough Amerime for two shows…let’s get back to the buziness of Anime stuffs
