So, a good long while back I threw around the idea of posting blogs on current anime. While we all enjoy Tom's Watch & Learn articles, it leaves something to be desired for those who want to read about brand new anime. So, I'm hoping these blogs will act as a good supplement to Tom's work.

Episode #1: Morning Training

This is only the first episode, put your damn clothes back on!
This is only the first episode, put your damn clothes back on!
So... Softenni. I saw this and immediately thought "so it's K-ON! but with tennis?" and that holds true to a certain extent. We have a group of girls who are members of their school's soft tennis club (which according to wikipedia differs from regular tennis in that they use a soft, rubber ball... scaredy-cats) and are aiming to be the best players around. They're cute, silly and each have their own traits and quirks. However one thing this series is going for that K-ON! didn't so much is fan service. I'm not usually one to complain about this sort of thing, but if the first episode is any indication of what's to come, then this is clearly one of those shows that puts fan service first, rather than it just being a cheeky extra. Which is a shame, because not only will lots of people turn it down because of this, but my first impression makes me think this would do better focusing on comedy more than underwear, but hey.

I don't know either...
I don't know either...
The main character is Asuna Harukaze (pink hair). She's a happy-go-lucky type who appears to live on a farm with her mother (I should probably note that farm-life seems to be a bit of a theme here, with cows both at home and at school). Asuna seems a bit clumsy, and interprets almost everything in a sexual context, constantly getting the wrong idea (for comedic effect of course). Of the four other girls from the intro, we have seen; Kotone Sawanatsu (brown hair) who seems to be the most normal, level-headed girl in the group, Chitose Akiyama (green hair) the busty girl with a huge appetite, and Kurusu Fuyukawa (blue/purple hair) the quiet girl who trains hard and has a strange hobby collecting giant masks. There's definitely a variety here. Oh, there's also the tennis club coach who the girls found snoring away drooling all over a bench in the tennis court. He'd apparently been drinking the night before with the principle and was very hungover. He's already my favourite character.

 Cotton clouds!
 Cotton clouds!
The visual style is actually really nice. Everything is very clean, bright and colourful, to the point where it almost reminds me of Kirby's Epic Yarn, particularly scenery drawn far off into the background. The tennis balls are pink, everyone has those crazy anime hair colours... it's like the artists were given a box of kids Crayola crayons and were told to go nuts, so I suppose it may not be for everyone.

Below are some more screen caps from this episode.
For even more screen caps go here.

So, is anyone else watching this? What do you think? Or is it just too fan servicey for it's own good?

Disclaimer: You won't really die, don't worry.
So my last blog was about an anime soundtrack, and the one before that was about an anime calendar, so why not round things off with some anime figures?

Say what you want, this is god damn adorable
Say what you want, this is god damn adorable

So as promised, here's a totally adorable Azusa anime figurine, ready to hit the beach in her pink swimsuit (or mizugi... if you want to be all Japanese about it...) as seen in the anime series itself.
Of course, this figure comes with optional cat ears. Because it's AzusaDuh.
You can pick this up from Play-Asia if you're the type who's willing to slap down 45 dollars for an anime figure (though you won't get it until April or something, this one's rather popular). Personally, I'm not one of those people, but I do think it's pretty cute. This is one of Wave's "Beach Queens" anime figures, thought personally I think "Beach Princesses" would have been more apt, but hey.
Also available is a tanned version, I prefer the regular though.

Here's the rest of the K-On! gang:

The Beach Queen series spans across tons of franchises and characters, here are the Oreimo figures (unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a Manami figure yet). Kirino seems a little bustier than she should be, and there's something just a tad... off with the Kuroneko figure (which is a shame because I like Kuroneko) but they're still both nice regardless.

So yeah, just thought I'd post about these, I think they're nice, even if I'll never buy one. Or probably any other anime figure for that matter, but hey, that's just me.
Man, I feel sorry for collectors, anime figurine collecting is an expensive sport indeed.

Rejoice! The time has come! The greatest anime soundtrack ever has been released!

You know it's good when it has cover art like this, right?
You know it's good when it has cover art like this, right?
One of the best things about GAINAX's bat-shit crazy anime series Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, alongside it's Powerpuff girl-like art style and it's unbelievably excessive profanity, is it's damn catchy music. The background tunes are great in their own right, but ever since this kickass transformation scene (clip embedded below), fans of the series (most definitely myself included) have been itching to get their hands on the full soundtrack. I'm delighted to inform those who didn't already know, that it has finally been released.
With all-time classics like D City Rock, Dancefloor Orgy, and Technodildo. One might wonder how they ever lived without this glorious soundtrack in their collection.
Here's that transformation sequence I was talking about, and yes, that is poop Panty is covered in right at the beginning -- they're fighting a giant poop-monster.
No, I'm not making this shit up.
Listen to the full version here
For those of you who aren't already fans of the anime, this is your window into the madness that is Panty & Stocking. So umm... yeah.
But all joking aside, this really is a catchy bunch of songs. The song from the clip above "Fly Away" and it's demon-sister counterpart "Theme for Scanty & Knee Socks" are the beats fans have been waiting to hear in full. Along with those you get the intro theme, ending theme, various background music from the series, and of course, it goes without saying that the song from the music video in episode 10 is included too, for those of you who haven't seen that before, check this out:
Also, I'm pretty sure one track is just Panty making sex noises.
So yeah, just thought I'd let you all know in case you missed it: Panty & Stocking The Original Soundtrack is out. And it's awesome.
Here are some of the full songs, if you want to hear the rest they aren't hard to find on youtube.

So, if Nyan-Type's new calendar is anything to go by, 2011 is the year of anime girls in Bunny Suits. In light of this new information I thought I'd quickly throw a blog post together, showing off the aforementioned calendar and maybe a few bonus images along with it. I've got to admit, I wouldn't mind buying it myself. But uh, I won't.
Nymph is totally adorable. Has one of your favourite characters been bunnied-up?

Bonus Bunny Fan Art!

Seems Panty & Stocking characters are pretty popular, enjoy!

Your friendly neighbourhood moderator Newten is back once again with more quality image uploads to the site, what's on show this time? More high quality screencaps, for Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou and the season premiere of Sora no Otoshimono: Forte.

"Get Naked! The Naked Hero Returns!"

Tomoki has started dreaming about the angel with blue hair once again, so the team decide to use a machine that lets them enter Tomoki's dream and try to figure it out once and for all. However, things never go very smoothly in this show, and they end up visiting each other's dreams in turn instead of just Tomoki's, chaos, of course, ensues.

Also, it's clear that Sora is a series that doesn't mind poking fun at itself, as can be seen in the new opening, any fan of the series should find this hilarious. I don't think they could have made a better opening for the new second season.

Ichiban Ushiro no Daemaou

I've emptied all of the episode galleries for Ichiban and uploaded fresh screencaps for each episode, they are now all consistently high quality and there are more of them. Before there were caps with subtitles (please don't upload images covered in subtitles!) a few were watermarked and the size and quality of the images varied quite a bit, so I've cleaned it all up. Here are caps from various points in the series.

 It's okay, it's just a sea cucumber!
 It's okay, it's just a sea cucumber!

If you're into fanservice, Ichiban has plenty of it, but it's also full of action too. I watched it all in a few sittings, and I'm still not entirely sure what happened... but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What I'm working on

  • I'm still working on the Highschool of the Dead series, it was quite a mess so I've cleared out the episode galleries and will be filling them back in later.
  • I'll also be working on the previous season of Sora soon as those episode pages are pretty bare.
  • Almost forgot, I'll add the Ichiban specials into the site's database and upload images for those.
  • And I'll occasionally be updating episode galleries of various different anime series to replace the current images with full HD Blu-ray caps, like I did with episode 4 of K-On!
Please don't mess with the episode galleries of the shows I've mentioned, I'm working on them! Thanks!
Hope you enjoyed my image update, if you did, let me know and I'll keep posting updates for you guys, if you have any suggestions of any kind, such as other anime series I should tackle, let me know.
