Off-Topic » Avatar movie thread

I finally saw it and I too was disappointed. For instance, it irked me that they changed things like the pronunciation of names (Aang became Ong by the sound of it). That was one of the easiest things to get right, and show that they wanted to be faithful to the source material, and yet they changed it. Why? Also, the dialogue was banal and the overall movie lacked the heart (and humour) of the show. It had its moments but I can't help but feel this movie could have been so much better in more capable hands.

Yeah, I'm really curious about this too. I wonder what else is going on with AV. staff seem a little quiet.

General Discussion » Production I.G "Involved" in GitS Adaptation

@sickVisionz: Agreed, as much as I love the first series, 2nd Gig is easily my favourite. Solid State Society was also a worthy addition, and I would dare say it was also a better version of the puppeteer story than the original manga.

General Discussion » Production I.G "Involved" in GitS Adaptation

Production I.G announced at their  AX 2010 panel that they are working with Dreamworks on the Ghost in the Shell adaptation. I'm still concerned about Hollywood doing adaptations of anime or manga, but this bit of news is a warm welcome.  I.G has been behind every Ghost anime, in both TV and film, so their expertise speaks for itself. Hopefully this means they may be involved in steering the adaptation towards a particularly faithful vision. As an avid GitS fan that would be great to see.

General Discussion » Manga Adaptations. Preferred approach

In general, I prefer adaptations that are faithful to the source material. There are exceptions, but most adaptations that stray from the spirit of the manga (or comic, book, whatever) that they are based on tend to be disappointing. That doesn't mean the writers and director shouldn't bring their own vision to the table, but the characters, themes and settings from the book should be recognizable to say the least.

Just Manga » New Manga Recommendation

I'm always looking for new manga to read, but I'm on a budget at the moment. All the manga I am reading now are multiple volumes in length and I don't want to add another big series to my list. Can anyone recommend a manga that is not part of a longer narrative (multiple volumes)? I'd like something that is just a good stand alone story.
