Just Manga » new tite kubo ????

I absolutely think he needs to move on. Face it, the only reason series continue that long are because the publishers push the creators to keep going, keep providing a cash cow. Victims of their own success.

Just Anime » Need help remembering an anime.

@vico: This anime is Battle Angel. I highly recommend the manga this movie was adapted from, Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm. James Cameron has owned the rights to create a live-action adaptation of this film for quite some time now and rumors are that it's underway again. Nothing really solid on that yet, though.

General Discussion » GANTZ, anime and manga

On the first question, one can almost universally expect the manga (either source or adaptation) to be more graphic in both areas due to the content restrictions that go along with televised broadcasts. As for Kato's annoyance factor, I'm glad GodLen answered you on that because I can't remember anything about his personality from the manga. In the face of Kishimoto's, umm...proportions?...I'm still trying to recall any of the happenings in the printed version.

Just Anime » What live action film?

The original Death Race 2000 (not that crap remake with Jason Statham). It would be like Speed Racer, but Chim-Chim would throw molotov cocktails at pedestrians. Look, the Japanese already have a movie poster for it:

Battles » spike spiegel vs vash

Spike would win in a pose-off.

Another answer to this battle would also be to postpone it long enough for Spike to die of lung cancer.

Fullmetal Alchemist » Uroboros tattoo

If your friend is dead set on getting a tattoo I think it's a good idea for two reasons: it doesn't look bad as a stand-alone design; and the people who recognize it for what it really is are folks your friend can form an instant connection with.

Battles » Gundam mechas vs Macross mechas

@Rayleon: This is what I meant by "if we're realistic about this" though. Honestly, the thrust:weight ratio of a couple hundred pound missile vs. a multi-ton (and big) mobile suit is too greatly in favor of the missile. Then multiply the threat of that missile by ten, twenty, maybe more and it seems extremely unrealistic that the head-mounted vulcan cannon can offer enough defense or that the mobile suit could find an escape vector where there wasn't an incoming missile.

Damn it, you've got me all embroiled in this now! This is like Kirk vs. Picard, Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer--this is yet another Vietnam of geeks!

Just Manga » Worst Main Character

It's hard to choose. Shinji Ikari really boiled my blood when I watched Evangelion. I mean, put yourself in his shoes and think "should I rise to the occasion and pilot this wicked giant robot to save the world (or whatever), or should I mince about and be paralyzed by my daddy issues?" Mind you, few of us have his messed up life, but still, this is the fate of humanity we're talking about.

Then again, the question wasn't "Which Character Do You Loathe", and storywise he serves his purpose, so on an academic level I can't say he's the worst main character. In that case I'll have to default my answer to every single male protagonist in anime who ever got surrounded by gorgeous and/or astoundingly powerful women that threw themselves at him yet never got the balls to just choose one. Those guys are always terrible characters.

I am such a curmudgeon!

Battles » Gundam mechas vs Macross mechas

I'm going to have to go with the VF-1 Valkyrie in this battle for two reasons: the Valkyrie has lots of stand-off range weaponry and is much quicker than the Gundam. By "stand-off range weaponry" I'm referring to missiles. If we're realistic about this (I can't believe I just wrote that...) the VF-1 can launch a swarm missile attack on the mobile suit and overwhelm it with those, or use them as a distraction while it moves in closer to use it's main weapon. The mobile suit can't outrun or outmaneuver a missile in space (the thrust:weight ratio is just too far in favor of the missile) and no mecha in the Gundam-verse has point defense. And don't tell me a mobile suit can just shoot them down with their beam cannon or machinegun--that's just silly.

Worst case scenario, the Valkyrie just runs away since it's so much faster.

Off-Topic » Boxing vs Karate

I think boxing would win, but my conclusion is based on educated guessing only, having never participated in either sport.

Karate has more techniques in its repertoire and a boxer would have trouble defending against, say, kicks to the legs meant to destabilize their opponent. It also sounds like more dirty moves like eye gouging are allowed with karate. However--and this is entirely based on assumption--it seems to me that boxers are more well-built and trained to take repeated hits while karate practitioners are less trained in both those important areas. I recall hearing that a decent boxer can deliver a blow with the force of 1000 pounds of force (or something in that region), so provided he land a few good blows, or maybe even a single well-placed strike, that boxer is going to floor their opponent.

Saki » Official AV Mahjong-playing users thread

Man, I have absolutely no clue how to play Mahjong, all I know is that it's one of my greatest delights in life is to stalk though the alleys of San Francisco Chinatown on weekend nights listening to the clacking tiles at "secret" second and third story mahjong parlors. It's gives me a wonderful affirmation that I'm alive and living in one of the most interesting cities on Earth.

General Discussion » What do you want to know about Battle Angle Alita.

As a fan of dystopian narrative settings I enjoyed BAA from its first English printing. However, when it moved up into space I felt like the series began to fall prey to "DBZ Syndrome", which is say a continuous string of power-ups and 11th hour battle comebacks. In that respect, the series may have peaked with the motorball/Jashugan fight. Ignoring the fights though, I eat up space operas and this is one nifty vision of future civilization in our solar system.
Gotta take the good with the bad.
