General Discussion » How would you have written Bleach?

I'd be much more interested in something a little less shonen-like. :P

When I first started reading Bleach I thought "Oh, cool. A manga about a high school kid who becomes a "shinigami" and has to save ghosts from being eaten".

Then I read a little further and found a typical shonen with sub-par characterization. :(

Off-Topic » What would likely be the cause of your death in the future?

Most likely heart or liver failure. Maybe stroke.

  • Movie versions of comic book characters serve as a great intro for people unaware of them.
That's unpopular? D:

Battles » Kakuzu & Hidan Vs. Deidara & Sasori

This is a difficult fight. Hidan is not very useful in this fight, because he doesn't have any sort of long range attacks to counter Deidara, and Sasori doesn't have any blood to speak of. That said, I can see Kakuzu taking out both of them with his combined elemental attacks. The majority of Sasori's physical attacks would not hurt Kakuzu. His Kazekage puppet would be the primary difficulty. Sasori would have the upper hand, but not so much that he is guaranteed a win. Deidara would lose, surely. Kakuzu is capable of countering long range, and Diedara's actual skill doesn't really compare to either Kakuzu or Sasori.

Sorry, but what proof do you have of the Buddhism point? I'm a Buddhist, we take pride in the fact that no war has been fought in the name of the Buddha, or the Buddhist religion. Plus, killing is strictly against the code of the Buddhist religion, never ever is it okay to kill or hurt somebody.

Mainstream Buddhism is non-violent. Non violence is a core of the Buddhist religion. But it's not true that there has never been violent Buddhist groups (I believe there were particularly violent groups in Japan at one time? Trying to use Buddhism to justify violence is rare but not unheard of. I can't remember the particulars. I'll look them up and post them, if you want). The point is that the religion isn't violent in of itself. Religions primary purpose is to bring people together. Through some accident of evolution, bringing humans together is an act that, as counter-intuitive as it seems, breeds violence. Nationalism is the same problem.

I don't think it'd be too controversial a concept in Buddhism that too much of an attachment to Buddhism be a source of suffering. ;)

This battle is cruel and inhumane towards lions. :(

  • DBZ is mediocre.
  • Ethical and existential nihilism is a true description of the Universe.
  • There is no God.
  • For a scientist to say that there is no God out of hand is contrary to the philosophy of science.
  • Islam is a violent religion.
  • And so is Christianity.
  • Also Buddhism.
  • Nationalism is far more dangerous.
  • Obscenity is never mentioned in the United States Constitution.
  • The government has no business banning drugs.
  • Prescriptions should be optional.

Just Anime » what anime genre do you like???

I like psychological thrillers. Things like PLUTO and Monster by Naoki Urasawa (Urasawa Naoki? I'm never sure which name is supposed to come first.). I just love that sort of thing.

Every once in awhile I'll get into a shonen like Naruto, if it's got good enough characters and a deep enough plot. I've also gotten into a few romantic comedies. I loved Love Hina. But again, only when the characters and plot are up to par. I also don't like a lot of mindless fanservice; talk about frustrating. I'll stick with hentai, which I also like quite a bit. ;)

General Discussion » How much do you like Dragon Ball Z?

I loved it when I was in the intended age group, but it's not really good enough to keep my interest beyond that. It doesn't really have any qualities beyond being a cool martial arts fantasy for teenaged boys. :/

Not trying to be a "serious adult", here. I still love the original Dragon Ball, and Avatar: TLA is one of my favorite shows ever. It's just DBZ doesn't fit anywhere but where it was made to fit. I've outgrown it.

Battles » Gaara vs Shikamaru

@UnHoLy_CruSadE: You don't understand; ideally Shikamaru would already have a counter strategy against Gaara, long before the battle actually begins; that's the point of prep. It's unlikely, given the chance, that Shikamaru would fight Gaara head-on. It's more likely that Gaara would be lead into a trap.

@UnHoLy_CruSadE: What does Shika have that's strong enough to bring down Hidan?
His quick thinking, and intelligence of course. He was able to lure Hidan away enough to come up with a method of burying the immortal akatsuki alive. Still doesn't answer my question as to what he's going to use against Gaara to bring him down. For all I know, Hidan was a block headed idiot, and Gaara actually thinks. He is the Kazekage after all. Gaara knows Shikamaru's thinking capabilities, but Shikamaru would predict that Gaara would know so, and use it for his advantage. However, Shikamaru has a small chakra pool that will not be sufficient for him to take down the Kazekage.
No, Shikimaru beat Hidan because of a combination of his skill of analysis and his adaptability on the off chance that things do not go to plan. Gaara is not at Shikamaru's level of intelligence. Shikamaru would win because of Shika's ability to analysis Gaara's abilities and weaknesses, and ultimately come up with the ideal counter. Chakra capacity has nothing to do with it, that's a simplistic view of combat, especially in Naruto.

Shikamaru is sort of like batman. Given enough prep, he'll win.

Whichever is the most interesting. I didn't specify; I'm not up to date on Bleach. I just assume that he's in top form. Whatever the upper limits of his abilities are that you've seen thus far.

Battles » Ageha vs Ichigo

Today is the battle of the high school hardasses! In corner one we have Ageha Yoshina!

On the other, we have Kurosaki Ichigo!

I like the ninja tourney rules, so we'll use them: the loser is the one who gives up or dies. Ageha has access to his nova form as a last resort, and all magic is the same (to defuse stupid "there's no chakra/ki/psi/mana/juju in my mangaverse" arguments.

I stopped reading Bleach after the first arc, so I don't know how good of a matchup this is, but I thought it'd be fun to pit them against each other because they have similar archetypes.
