AP's Best Anime of 2011

I did more catching up with older shows than pay much attention to new ones this year, so I'm grateful I don't have to do more than 5 (but I will anyway). Another reason is that my penchant for watching terrible shows gets the better of me, and I can't seem to kick the habit. But anyway, here are the top 5 anime shows that I mostly enjoyed in 2011--and you know, the ones that are actually good. Here you go.

1. Fate/Zero

Hands down, the best show I've seen this year. Great story and characters, and gorgeous visuals, things that almost rival the Kara no Kyoukai movie series. A well-done prequel to Stay/night, overall.

2. Persona 4: The Animation

Believe me when I say that I was a complete skeptic when I first heard about one of my all-time favorite games being turned into an anime. Sure, it's fanservice-y, but what P4 The Animation does well is stay true to the original source material, and at the same time, doing some neat things with the Social Link stuff.

3. Bunny Drop

The 'Feelgood' anime of the year. It has an interesting story about Daikichi struggling to raise a kid nobody wants, and his relationship with her is what I enjoyed about it the most. Simple but beautiful visuals, and a charming cast that'll sure tug on the heartstrings quite a bit. If you haven't seen this yet, do it now.

4. Steins;Gate

Despite a slow (but otherwise entertaining) start, Steins;gate is overall, an enjoyable sci-fi thriller with a good story and has its share of twists. Sure it falls apart on the second half, but it's the characters that really make this show shine.

5. Hanasaku Iroha

A fun coming-of-age story. It's great to see Ohana grow as a character, and some notable ones such as Minchi and Nako have some interesting backstories that made them memorable. It's a shame the show was kind of ruined by all the corny, teenage romance drama stuff, but it's still a good show to watch.

6. Anime Vice Yearly Best Of
7. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Shocking, sometimes disturbing, but an otherwise interesting take on the mahou shoujo genre. How exactly? By distorting that very genre and implementing a dark story to top it off. And that's what's great about it. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Is your list in rank order or do you want Madoka counted above something else?

The first 5 are in order. I put Madoka just for the hell of it. You don't have to count it if you don't want to.
