1. Leiji Matsumoto
Galaxy Express 999 and what I call Star Blazers. Although other creators had a hand in the works that made Akira "Leiji" Matsumoto famous, his distinctive style helped distinguish them. |

2. Hayao Miyazaki
Creator of some of the best films I've seen. |

3. Osamu Tezuka
I only discovered his work recently, having been turned off by his simple art style. I had no idea what I was missing. He created genuinely interesting and original subjects and stories when people did, and still do, just recreate what came before. |

4. Katsuhiro Otomo
Akira broke with many traditions, and Otomo Katsuhiro seems always first and foremost to be a teller of science fiction and supernatural stories. It just so happens the best way for him to do that is through manga and animation. Even when I was disappointed with Steam Boy, it was more than I knew he could do better than that I was disillusioned. |

5. Yoshinobu Nishizaki
While Leiji Matsumoto tends to get all the credit for Space Battleship Yamato, Yoshinobu Nishizaki got the project started before Matsumoto was ever brought on board. Though Yamato wouldn't be at all recognizable had he not been, Nishizaki is the one that first set course for Iscandar. |
