@CH3BURASHKA Maybe people praise Spirited Away because it's good. Mononoke was my first Ghibli film and I can see why it's one of the major standouts but I was never enraptured more so than I was with Spirited Away. I still get chills during the scene when the spirit world first begins to appear.

@AgentJ Really solid list and I agree about the great character development that Spirited Away had. That movie resonates with me personally because I too had to move away (overseas) at a young age and it doesn't hurt that the movie is accompanied by an outstanding soundtrack. I should get to watching Nausicaa.

i HONESTLY struggle with people saying, I don't know why people love Mononoke.

Other than the artwork? IMHO this is one of the few Miyazaki films (I'm not actually familiar with the other Ghibli artists) that isn't about artwork at al, its about characters.

Spirited Away drowns in lavish representations of Japanese Culture and Spirituality, Nausicaa fails to have time for much other than making you emotionally attached to a big lice, Totoro is always staring at you so you can't worry about who he actually is, Porco Rosso is an anti hero you're left staring at, I could go on, blithely.

Princess Mononoke blends that all together (as stated in the article) to make a REAL MOVIE, it has suspense, a long story, a hint of Spirituality, a climax and a resolution. On top of that, we get a Romeo and Juliet story and of course, spectacular scoring and amazing visuals.

I don't think its the best anime, now that I know more about anime as a genre, there are better more subtle examples. It is by far the best movie, and IMHO, the best animated film ever made.

I have seen every Studio Ghibli film fortunately, even own them all on DVD. I know Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are usually everyone favorites when it comes to Ghibli films, but I find my absolute favorite is Whisper of the Heart. It is an earlier film; came out right before Princess Mononoke. It is one of the few films that can actually make this grown man cry. Such a beautiful film, I recommend it to all Ghibili fans who haven't seen it yet. It was in fact written by the man himself, Hayao Miyazki! That man is a legend in my book.

THIS! Is by far his best movie. Maybe it is because it was one of the first anime I saw, maybe it is because it was during a phase when I was an even stronger environmentalist than I am now (really I was all most a Luddite), but this is far and away my favorite Ghiligi movie. For movies only Ghost in the Shell (1 and 2) left me with my mouth hanging on the floor in this way. There is sooo much to talk about in this movie and the philosophical issues it brings up are handled so adroitly. You just have to ask as tom does above, is Lady Eboshi a good person to get it started. Never is it ham handed and you can ignore the questions completly if you like but they are there helping to raise a simple adventure story to the level of a classic piece of art.

I REALLY need to find a way to watch this again. I wonder if you can still buy it for a reasonable price?

I really don't get the hate...everything he said about the movie is in it, and reviews are an interpretive process. That is why you read more than one before you make a decision. Especially if you are deciding on the best between a group of truly great movies...
