Portgas D Ace was the former 2nd division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, and adoptive brother of Monkey D. Luffy. Son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger.
Ace is the child of Gold Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. He was born on the island of Baterilla in the South Blue after the execution of Roger. To protect him, she held back her own pregnancy till the World Government stopped hunting for newborns. This stress led to her death soon after Ace's birth. He was given to Monkey D. Garp, who took him back to his home of Dawn Island in the East Blue. He was then passed on to a band of mountain bandits led by Dadan, but Garp would frequently visit. Ace grew up getting in fights and constantly heard people cursing the name of his father. He would eventually meet another young outcast named Sabo. Together they caused havoc and robbed bandits to raise money to leave one day.
Garp would eventually bring Ace his biological grandson, Luffy, to live when them, as well. Ace ignored Luffy as he would chase after him to be friends. Their relationship changed after Luffy was caught by one of the Porchemy of the Bluejam Pirates. Luffy had refused to rat out where Ace had stored the money he had robbed and was beaten ruthlessly until Ace and Sabo came to his rescue. Afterward, the trio shared a cup of sake and became as brothers.
Their time together came to an end when Sabo's father, socialites of High Town, hired Bluejam to capture them. Sabo returned to protect Ace and Luffy, and the pair stayed behind and did jobs for Bluejam. Part of their job was carrying crates around Grey Terminal, but these later were revealed to be firebombs set to wipe out the people of Grey Terminal. Bluejam came after Ace and Luffy once he realized he had been betrayed, but the two were little help against him. They were saved by Dadan, and Ace stayed behind to help fight Bluejam as her men got Luffy away. They won, but Dadan was hurt. He tended to her wounds hidden in the woods. After their return, a letter arrived from Sabo. It had been written before he was apparently murdered. Ace and Luffy trained together for years before he went out on his own at the age of seventeen.
On Ace's journey, he began the Spade Pirates, and ate the powerful Flame-Flame devil fruit. Ace clashed with the Warlord, Jimbei, as he was after Whitebeard, but the Whitebeard Pirates leader eventually came after him. Ace and his entire crew were defeated easily, but Whitebeard invited them to join him as his sons. Ace was reluctant, and he even tried to kill Whitebeard several times. After telling Whitebeard that he was the son of Gold Roger, the two began to bond. Ace climbed the ranks and became the proud commander of Whitebeard's 2nd Division.
After Marshall D. Teach murdered his commander Thatch for the devil fruit he had found, Ace went out on a hunt for Teach, now calling himself Blackbeard, despite Whitebeard's protest that he stay. Ace's hunt led him to Drum Island, and then onto the dessert kingdom of Alabasta.
Portgas D. Ace is a supporting character in the One Piece series that was created by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. She would later appear in the Drum Island Arc that began in Volume 15.
His first appearance was in One Piece Volume 17 CH. 154 "To Alabasta", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 91 "Goodbye Drum Island! I’m Going Out to Sea!". His character in the Japanese series is initially voiced by Toshio Furukawa, Daisuke Sakaguchi for young Ace, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is performed by Travis Willingham.
Ace was in a diner in Alabasta when the Marine Captain Smoker attempted to arrest him. That was until Luffy came bursting through and knocking them two of them through several buildings. Smoker chased Luffy away before Ace could call out to his brother, but he was able to later cover Luffy and his crew's escape from the Marines. Ace caught up with Luffy on the Going Merry and passed him a piece of Vivre Card without telling him what it was for. He soon left and wiped out several Baroque Works agent ships by himself to clear Luffy's path before heading back out on his hunt.
Ace finally caught up with Blackbeard on Banaro Island. He tried to convince Ace to join him, but Blackbeard didn't know Ace and Luffy were brothers when he invited Ace to help capture Luffy. Blackbeard revealed his Dark-Dark Devil Fruit powers, and the two had an epic battle. All of Ace's attacks were absorbed, and Blackbeard could somehow cancel out Ace's powers. Ace was captured and handed over to the World Government so Blackbeard could take the vacancy in the Seven Warlords.
Ace had been taken to the great prison Impel Down in the Calm Belt. Garp would occasionally visit and regret he and Luffy had chosen to be pirates. Jimbei was eventually locked in the cell with him for refusing to help fight against Whitebeard in the coming war that would be over him. Ace told Jimei about Luffy and asked him to watch over his brother after he was dead.
Ace was later surprised when Boa Hancock, leader of the Kuja Pirates and a Seven Warlord member, came to see him personally. She distracted the guards then whispered to him that Luffy had snuck into Impel Down to save him. After several days, the rescue had failed. Ace was being taken to Marineford for his public execution, and as far as he knew Luffy was now trapped inside Impel Down with no way out.
The World Government had gathered their entire elite commanders to face off against Whitebeard's armada. Before the war broke out, Fleet-Admiral Sengoku announced to the world that Ace was the son of Gold Roger. All out war broke as soon as Whitebeard arrived with his fleet of allies. Among the chaos of the battle, everyone still noticed a giant ship falling from the sky. Among those falling were Luffy and several more escapees from Impel Down. Ace shouted at Luffy and scolded him for interfering in his adventure, but Luffy only shouted back that he was going to save him even if it meant his death. Ace could only watch as the two sides fought over him. He witnessed Luffy fight past soldiers, vice-admirals, Warlords, and even faced off against the Marine admirals. Luffy barely got past them, but was still forced to fight Garp before he could reach Ace.
Luffy was able to free Ace of the sea prism stone cuffs with the help of Mr. 3, and the two brothers were able to fight along side one another yet again. Whitebeard had been seriously injured during the battle, and Ace thanked him for being a good father to him. As they tried to escape, Ace fell for Admiral Akainu's taunts, and he was burned by his more powerful Magma-Magma powers. When Akainu went in to strike Luffy who had collapsed from exhaustion, Ace leaped in to take the fatal blow to save his brother. Ace collapsed into Luffy's arms. In his final words, he regrets that he'll never be able to see Luffy fulfill his dream, and wished he would pass on that he was thankful to everyone for making him happy that he had been born.
After the Paramount War was over, Red-haired Shanks arrived to claim the bodies of both Ace and Whitebeard. He made sure they were given a proper burial together for the surviving Whitebeard Pirates.
Ace holds the powers of the Flame-Flame Fruit (メラメラの実, Mera Mera no Mi). This is one of the powerful logia-type devil fruits. This has altered the make up of his body into a living flame. This also makes him immune to physical based attacks. Punches, swords, and even gunshots will pass through his body leaving him completely unharmed.
Haki (覇気, Haki) is a power that is possessed by all people, but few can actually use it. It's often unique to those with a strong enough will to control. This power is even strong enough to cancel out the powers of Devil Fruit users, but even they can use this skill. There are three basic forms of Haki, and Ace has only been seen to be able to use one.
The Striker is the personal vessel of Ace that seems to have been personally crafted for him and his powers. Ace rides it with standing and uses his Flame-Flame fire abilities to power the engine that directs him flames through the rear to act and propulsion in the water. It can travel and incredible speeds.
The Log Pose is a unique kind of compass that is used to navigate the Grand Line. Without one, it's easy to get lost and never find another island. Ace wore his during his hunt of Blackeard.
