The film Ponyo is an animated fantasy movie based in the real world. It's the ninth animated movie directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki. Music was composed by Joe Hisaishi. The Studio Ghibli company produced the movie and distributed by TOHO. The film has won several awards, including the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. Miyazaki was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen's story, " The Little Mermaid".

The original Japanese release of the film was on July 27, 2001. The movie had a ¥3.4 Billion ($34 Million) budget and it would go on to a gross revenue of ¥16.5 Billion ($202 Million). The movie was released to U.S. and Canadian theaters on August 14, 2009 at 927 theaters across America. The widest theatrical release for an anime movie at the time and make $15,090,399 at the box office. The Disney company would release the film on DVD and Blu-ray on March 2, 2010.

The seaside village of Tomonoura is a real town and setting for the film. It's located at the Setonaikai National Park in Japan, where Miyazaki stayed in 2005. The lead character Sousuke was inspired by Miyazaki's own son, Goro Miyazaki.

Sosuke is a boy who vows to take care of a goldfish he rescues named Ponyo, but the goldfish's father, who is a powerful sorcerer, forces her back home into the ocean. Because of Ponyo's trip into the world above now the balance has gone out of control as Ponyo releases her father's magical Water of Life creating a huge storm. Sosuke and Ponyo then must travel on an adventure larger than the sea itself to restore balance.
